we actually brought all our own stuff (well, my brother and uncle mostly), so didn't really rent anything or whatever... sloane's the one with the ice cream and the random cigarette counter off by its own?  we just stayed at a basic BLM camp site (upper right star, Golden Currant maybe?), would drop off boats at Gray Reef dam (lower left star), and then shuttle pickup vehicle back to Government Bridge or wherever we planned to take out that day.  fishing wasn't great while we there and it was hot as hell and not generally fun so we cut that portion of the trip short after a few days and went back to saratoga (spent a few days there earlier in the trip on more 'family-friendly' stuff than fishing all day).  much cooler, much more interesting floats, and fishing was better there (which sounds like it was maybe unusual).  same deal there - just slept in tents at a campsite and shuttled back/forth.

Wow, we were literally in the exact same spot.  Buffalo Berry campground where I stayed is 1 mile further down the dirt road from Golden Currant. I was there July 16-18 and there was a big Black RV parked in the Golden Currant campground my entire stay, was that your crew?

I got my WY fishing license and some ice cream at sloanes along with some cold brews.

Also got delayed leaving the campground by the dam cows on the road two different times!

Caught some wipers below the spillway at Hillsdale last weekend. Cleaned them and had fish sandwiches for lunch this week.

(Totally cheating though because I used Minnows)

Dudes/dudettes, I’m taking the fam out to Estes Park for a week of quarantine outdoors fun. Kids have never fished. I haven’t fished in about 15 years and that was for whatever liked worms and chicken livers on the Steve Dave ranch. I want to buy some gear so we don’t have to rent it and just have it. Going to Scheels today to get down on some. What do those trout out there like to eat when it comes to lures? Like, rooster tails probably? I’m not fly fishing even though I have one (1) credit hour of fly fishing experience from K-State (great course btw).

If you wanna cheat and get instant play, get salmon eggs and/or power bait. Works like a charm. Just put it on top of whatever loser lure you’re throwing out there.

Only kids 12 and under can use bait, at least in RMNP. Adults have to use artificial lures.  Estes Park is beautiful, my brother and I used to fish out there a lot as kids.

There's some huge crawdads in that lake as well. They look like lobsters. Some are blue. I bet they'd have fun pulling up rocks and seeing those bad boys.

You can cook them just like a lobster and they are very tasty.
Hot time in Kat town tonight.

Just get some basic spin cast rod/reel combo and some basic Rooster tails/spinners/roadrunners for lures. When you buy your fishing license at some hole in the wall place in Estes Park just ask the guy what he recommends and then buy some of those.

Thinking about starting to go fishing more. Need to buy some gear first but where do the fish really bite in the KC area?

Shawnee mission park has a nice stocked lake.  Lake Olathe is a good option too.

Hillsdale is my go to "Big lake". Get some Minnows (pick em up at the 1 gas station in Hillsdale KS) and a step ladder and head to the spillway. Set up the step ladder so you can hang over the concrete wall (with a giant "keep off wall" sign) and cast your minnow down there under a bobber and reel in the fish.

There are also alot of fish in random business park ponds. This one is my favorite.

Hillsdale is good, lots of bank fishing options and spillway as well. I picked up a 10 foot kayak I can throw in the back of my SUV and it has made fishing Hillsdale a lot of fun. The spring crappie at Hillsdale was outstanding this  year.  Walleye is supposed to be great at Hillsdale too.

went to scheels today and cruised by the fishing stuff section and, folks, I cannot deal with that selection. I would normally have told some kid working there where I was going and what I needed and paid for whatever he brought out to me but it was too busy.

can I just order this crap from cabelas or something? any advice on that? I need crap for 2 adults and 2 kids (ages 4 and 7)
