Knight made a quiet debut in Big 12 Conference play as his squad improved to 12-1 on the season.Point guard Larry Reid has a sore right leg that kept him out of Sunday's game, and Reid's absence created a pain for K-StateBy Kevin HaskinThe Capital-JournalLUBBOCK, Texas --- Another new chapter to the Bob Knight coaching saga was started on Sunday, but it wasn't enough to fill much space.The first Big 12 game for the Texas Tech coach was uneventful.No chairs bounced across the floor at United Spirit Arena, no tables slammed at midcourt, no technicals were assessed.There was no need. Knight and his Red Raiders handed Kansas State a mild-mannered, yet lopsided, 74-49 defeat and rolled to their ninth straight victory.K-State, which fell to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in the Big 12, bettered Texas Tech (12-1, 1-0) in many categories, holding an edge in field goal percentage and rebounds. But one key came from beyond a line Knight would just as soon see erased."I'd like to win with no 3-point shots. I'd like to send it to heaven where Fred Taylor is today," Knight said of his Ohio State coach, who died on Sunday.This one time, though, the 3-point shot was the Raiders' salvation as they went 7 of 27. Not great, but K-State could only counter with a 1-for-7 clip from bonus range as it played without point guard Larry Reid, who sat out with a strained quadriceps.Although Tech missed all but two of its first 15 attempts from 3- point range over the Wildcats' scrappy 2-3 zone, little-used sophomore Marcus Shropshire finally connected.The 6-foot sophomore came in averaging 1 point per game and had made just 10 points in 50 minutes on the season, yet he netted three treys in the final 2:30 of the first half to give Tech a 33-26 edge at the break.Shropshire's bombs, along with a dunk by 6-11 senior center Andy Ellis, were part of a 12-2 run the Raiders enjoyed to end the half. It was the first time Tech showed any superiority after the lead had been swapped eight times in the first 16 minutes."It was a key time in the game," said K-State coach Jim Wooldridge, "but at the same time I can't say I was really disappointed in the first half. It was how we wanted, and needed, to play that first half."But they made some key plays and that gave them some energy and confidence going into the second half, so that was an important stretch."K-State was still within six, 44-38, after a dunk by 6-9 junior center Pervis Pasco with 13:45 remaining, but then went scoreless during the next five minutes. Tech capitalized on the drought with 11 unanswered points as backups Nick Valdez and Nathan Doudney scored 14 and 10, respectively, to go with the 9 points Shropshire scored during the first-half sizz."They had guys come in and respond to the minutes they got," Wooldridge said. "They've got a good team, a lot of weapons."Especially when three starters who were averaging 38 points collectively were held to just four. Forward Pawel Storozynski posted those, while Kasib Powell and Will Chavis each were blanked."Somebody had to take up the slack, and those three (reserves) did a good job," Knight said. "They put us in position where we didn't have to come from behind."Sophomore guard Andre Emmett led the Raiders with 23 points and 9 rebounds.Senior Phineas Atchison led K-State with 12 points after he was inserted into the starting lineup at off guard. Freshman Nick Williams shifted to the point and had 9 points and 4 assists. "It's a typical Doc Sadler-coached team, a team that's going to fight you for 40 minutes," Martin said. "They play offense at a high pace, at an unbelievably efficient rate. Defensively, they give you nothing easy.""I'm not a prophet, but I'm pretty intelligent and I know my business," Martin said. "I told you their teams ain't going to lay down. Doc Sadler hasn't won as many games and as many championships in his career because his teams lay down."
