Does anyone have any experience with foreign traffic citations?

Is there any real danger in ignoring a notice and fine from the Roman police indicating that a traffic camera caught me driving in a bus lane?

Will I not be able to rent a car if and when I return to Rome/Italy/other EU nations?

Interesting question. The rental car company may just pay it and charge you.

Same exact thing happened to a colleague.  I know he didn't pay it.  Will investigate and report back.

A little more info ...

I was in Italy in October 2012.

About a year ago, the rental car company sent me a notice (entirely in Italian) and charged me for an administrative fee for giving my information to the police, I disputed that charge with my credit card company and after they investigated they decided not to issue payment.

I just got the notice from the Roman police (in English) via certified mail this week. There is no mention of the consequences of failing to pay the €105 fine.

Lots of varying advice online, pretty much all of it relates to driving in Italy.

Ok he got it in Italy, they sent him a notice 14 months after his visit.  He didn't pay it but will go back to Italy someday.  He has been back to the EU since without issue.  Also he just got another ticket in Hungary that he will not pay.

i probably wouldn't. i got a ticket for driving on expired tags in a work vehicle in colorado over ten years ago. was a work vehicle so i never paid because they said they would. then moved back to ks and lived for along time and renewed my license no prob and then went to renew again at a later date and boom. problem. ks would not renew my license until i took care of the colorado thing. their systems are connected now.

Colorado totally mumped me on a ticket once.  I mailed them a check and they were like "oh hey we don't accept checks but here's a bench warrant rough rider."  :curse:

Colorado law enforcement is easy.  Tell them you're a local and they will let you go with a warning.  Also, they will tell you to switch to CO tags/license.  I've been pulled over for speeding twice and they let me go.  My GF was pulled over for headlight out, running a stop sign, no registration and expired tags and got a warning with this.

what's the best car rental company?

whoever your company contracts with. we have agreements with Hertz and Enterprise. I get a reduced rate at both and free "insurance" on any damage I do to the cars. Also a Hertz Gold. Mrs. dave is a National Emerald. I'm positive your company would have something similar with someone. the best part of it is they will probably have negotiated rates for certain cars so even if it's super busy for huge events or whatever and they are charging $200 a day for a midsize they have to give you one for $39 or whatever your company negotiated.

Avis is an option but i seem to hear more positives about Hertz in the small sample size of opinions i've gathered

Hertz has a good point program. Enterprise just rolled one out but I have no experience with it. Hertz and National (Enterprise, Alamo and National are the same company) are your real options.
