Hey look, Trim's pickin' on yard dog!  He really is Fanning#2.

yardie, how tall are you?  I was thinking like 6'3" tops...

6'4" on a good day. 6'3" if I havent been to the chiropractor in a while.

and a tie doesn't fit you? im 6'4" and ive never had an issue with ties.

But ydarg's tie has to make the big journey around the free keg that apparently is his new stomach since he bought the discounted vest at a foreign jcp.

I just went by Marshalls and with a half windsor and the tie to my belt, the part of the tie in the back didn't reach the part of the tie it is supposed to tuck into.  So a double windsor is way out of the question.  Do you use a double or a half?

Buy a bow tie and TownieCat will teach you how to tie it.

Do you know what looks good with a bow tie? A vest.

I bought a vest to wear to a date party once, per request of exTownieGF, and have worn it once since. Bad investment.

Just about anything except a similar shade of dark charcoal will work.

Thank you! Mrs Gooch gets it. Found a vest last night at JCP it said $80 on the tag and when I went to check out the cashier said "That'll be $43" So. . I didn't complain.  Then I swung by rue 21 and found some "going out" button downs for $7 each. I might need a fashion intervention guys. But I want to be a baller on a budget.

in order to help you with your button down issue I need some chest hair info. how are you doing in the hamburger meat department? maybe post a picture.
I think what my friend Mitch is trying to say is that true love is blind.

Pants for a dark charcoal blazer.

Good reason not to get a gray blazer, especially dark gray. Not nearly as flexible as a blue blazer. With a lighter gray you could wear it with navy or black slacks, at least. But if it's too dark a gray, then you start running into the issue with navy and black of it looking like a mismatched suit. If it's that dark, though, then you could probably wear it with light gray slacks, especially if the material/texture also has some contrast to the blazer material. The right shade of khaki or brown (trickier) could work, too...and if you're a jeans with sportcoat kinda guy, then nice blue jeans could work.

Hope your vest works out, ydarg. If you're going to try to do a vest with a suit using a vest other than one made with the suit material as part of a three-piece, you can google image "odd vest suit" for some ideas. Easier to do an odd vest (term for a vest not made as part of a suit) with a less formal suit or sportcoat, though. Gotta avoid looking like you're headed to prom or a Men's Wearhouse wedding.

Also, whoever said to check out the big and tall tie section and tiebar.com was right on. Tie Bar has big and tall ties, BTW. And the ties are thick enough that the four-in-hand referenced by spracne won't look too asymmetrical, if you're not into that.
