if Hoi left for the NBA would that result in the greatest ISU meltdown of all time?

if he left for KU.

Oh man, had not considered this

He isn't leaving but it would be hilarious to see their coaching lists include Smart and Marshall.

i really don't understand how someone like him doesn't take the NBA opportunity.  it's the highest level of the sport he's spent his life playing and involved with.  the thought of him turning down the opportunity to compete with and against the best for a world championship just doesn't seem to jive with the athlete/competitor that he is.

ames will always be there unless another massive flood tries to wipe it out.  he can always return home.

"Fred has also said he knows he will have to have a major heart procedure sometime in the future. Given what he has in terms of security and family here in Ames, I just don't think he's going to consider a move--maybe EVER, but at the very least until that is done and over and he's completely recuperated."

What does this mean? Can someone fill me in on the status of Fred's heart?

Thinking that he'll receive better care for his heart condition from his friends and family in Ames, IA, than he would in any of the major metro areas where NBA teams are located is rather Iowa Statey.

Hard to say. The big thing with that is family nearby means support for his kids and wife during the procedure, which will apparently take over a month of recovery. If it was in summer time, they could be sent to Ames too. Who knows. We don't want to lose our guy. It doesn't take a genius to realize that. Fans are obviously on pins and needles and are capable of making stupid comments while not on pins and needles.

a whole month of recovery? :surprised:

Not uncommon with heart surgery, especially those requiring chest cracks.

Golly, how would an NBA coach be able to afford babysitters and nurses for such a long time?

The Mayo clinic is in greater Minneapolis.  I've heard good things about their doctors.

The Mayo Clinic (in Rochester) is probably where the surgery would occur, even if he was still the coach in Ames.

Yeah.  A friend had a mystery illness that doctors in Charleston and Atlanta couldn't diagnose.

Went to Mayo, blam-diagnosed, symptoms mitigated, now fully recovered.

Fred should probably just move close by.

if he truly does have a heart issue - and i want to be clear that i personally don't believe he does, the last place he will want to be is in ames, iowa, hundreds of miles from the closest competent cardiologist.

like i said though, i believe this heart thing is made up.  i'm guessing he came up with the idea to make recruits feel sorry for him so that they would transfer there.  "listen royce white, if you don't transfer here i might die"  type of crap.  very low brow.

The price for a heart valve replacement in Ames is 5 show quality lambs and a gallon of homemade butter.  That could be a huge factor in him staying.

My 80 year old grandmother (maybe 100 pounds soaking wet) had heart surgery and it only took 2 weeks to recover completely.

So it's either made up or he's a giant pussy.

I think they NBA may pay him enough to his family out.  Could probably even afford to put some of them up in a Days Inn if someone is already sleeping on his sofa in what will no doubt be a two bedroom cottage.

Flip Saunders is the Minnesota GM
Quote
"It's not the right opportunity for him to go to the NBA," Saunders told Hartman, "Do I feel someday he's going to be in the NBA? There's no question. He's going to be there. From a timing perspective, no matter where it's at, this is not the time."
