So, some people's opinions are worth more than others? Sounds pretty bitchy to me. Either that or
Which one is it?
There is no such thing as the "worth" of an opinion, but it can be supported by accurate evidence, or it can be supported by logical fallacies, ignorance, etc. For example, a person that expresses the opinion "Black people are not as intelligent as white people" has a legal and social right to that opinion, but that does not mean the opinion is well-founded. I believe that arguments that rely on tradition are inherently suspect, and generally shallow. My argument is based on social-science research about the effects of language.
I don't think expressing my disagreement with someone makes me a bitch. Holding them to the same standards of logic and evidence that I hold myself to is reasonable, and predictable.
Oh- and about the "guys" thing. I'm kind of on the fence about that one actually. (a) I think its possible that usage has truly changed the meaning of that term, though I'm not exactly sure about that, and I don't think it applies to "mankind," and (b) It's been an effort to eliminate gendered language from my own vocabulary, and sometimes I unthinkingly use it. I was raised in the same culture as everyone else that's part of this conversation, and it's sometimes hard to change.
