Jake a Legend?
« on: March 22, 2011, 07:21:50 PM »
Maybe it's just me. I am a fan. I haven't missed a game without being out of range of a radio (or now, not having access to the Internet)for 37 years. I have watched many good teams, and some not so good ones. I say this to suggest that I am all purple and white (I know, there's only one official color, but I like the combination) and I'm supportive of all the teams, from volleyball to baseball, and somewhat theoretically, equestrian, rowing, track and field, and tennis (sports we never see, but read about in the paper). I think Jacob Pullen is a great Wildcat, an excellent player, and except for the hiccup at Dillard's, a great role model for the basketball program. But "legendary"? What is the legend of Jacob Pullen? What has he done that is legendary? He has worked hard, improved, led the team, worked even harder, had a couple of terrific games (Xavier and Kansas = legendary?). He deserves to have his jersey hanging from the rafters. But to me, "legendary" is pure hyperbole. Maybe it will take a few years. The purple popgun twins? Close to legendary. What a combination! In a way, and from my point of view, the most legendary player in recent years was Laurie Koehn. "Legend" has it that coaches and players witnessed her make 99 of 100 three pointers. According to K-State mythology, she is the greatest shooter of all time. That is the stuff of legend, except for those who downplay women's sports and refuse to give credit to women for their accomplishments. Maybe "legendary" should apply to those invisible teams. After all, no one has seen them, yet we believe in their exploits just the same. To give credence to their status, the Athletic Department brings them out each year to stand before us at a football or basketball game in order that we do homage to them and their exploits on behalf of Wildcats everywhere.

You honestly think Jake is more legendary than Laurie Koehn?  Now I've heard it all.

I've not heard him called a "legend"... If that term has been used then someone is throwing the word around loosely. I have heard him called the all-time leading scorer for K-State Men's hoops... that one's a little easier to measure however. He's certainly one of the better all-around players that's ever donned the uniform... and one of the more decorated players as well.

As far as comparing him to the estro-baller, I gotta admit, I'm rough ridin' clueless. She must have been really good though.

Pullen is our all time leader in points. He also helped but K-State basketball on the map with 3 tournament visits in 4 years. You can definitely put him i in legendary status among K-State athletes.

I don't know what more jacob could have done in his career he was an intentional foul call short of a Final Four and has been a leader on our team and the face of our program for 3 years. I am no old head by any means and my KSU love and history doesn't go back to childhood like most posters on this board, but I think for me and in my eyes Jake is Legend.

women's basketball is boring and you use Jake as a way to prove the point?

Legends aren't born in practice. No one cares how many set shots someone makes in a dark arena.

Jake owns the career scoring record (you know, for points scored in actual games) and was the common link in an unbelievable turnaround of a dead men's basketball progam. He played his best when the pressure was on and he was the best all around player in the Big XII this year. He had 18 points as a freshman when we beat KU for the 1st time in our own gym. I could go on but it's not worth the wasted energy from here.

K-Staters will be talking for years about how Pullen threw multiple daggers into Xavier in the best game of the 2010 Tourney, how he dropped 38 in a big upset of KU this year, how he kissed the floor his final time leaving the Bram, and hw he broke the all-time K-State scoring record in style in the 2011 NCAA tourney. That's the stuff of K-State legend.

Jacob Pullen is LEGEN...(wait for it)...DARY.

You're kidding right?

His game against KU his frosh year: I knew we had the two best players (Beasley and Walker) but we had the three best that night=legendary

BYU last year. Jimmer, everyone's all-American, depantsed by the beard. Jacob had more points and virtually shut him down=legendary

Xavier last year. Just watch the Gus Johnson on Youtube and tell me that is not legendary

KU this year. 38 points...nuff said

The last 10 games of this year=legendary

Wisconsin...against yet another all American...another depantsing

We may never see another player like Pullen and likely will never see a string of such performances from a single player

Jake has meant more to this program than any player in a quarter century.

He'll never be forgotten.

"Legendary" fits the bill.

Laurie Koehn? How does Laurie Koehn even compare to, say, Kendra Wecker or Nicole Oldhe?

Bizarre.

What makes Jake the stuff of Legends is exactly what B Clay pointed out. Jake has meant more to this programs turn around than anyone else. When we look back on all of this, it will be him people talk about. It will be him in conversations that suggest this was the beginning. It was Jake man.

The thought has crossed my mind that he may be a little overhyped at this moment... but I've concluded the opposite. ?Nit just big games, but HUGE games (legendary, I dare say) in the most crucial of moments. ?Not only that, but at a time when the program needed it more than ever. ?We were about to reach a full generation of fans that had no knowledge of K- State as a big time basketball school... then along comes Huggins, Frank, Beasley, and Jake... enter a new era of basketball. ?An era that will forever be linked with one player more than any other... Jacob Pullen.

He's clearly a once in a generation player... and to me that pretty much makes you a legend.

Wow. I can see why you might question the label of "legend" for anyone who just hung up his jersey a few days ago (seems to me that "legendary status" is not something that is declared, but just sort of accrues, over time). Nonetheless, anyone who thinks Laurie Koehn's accomplishments were more significant, or "legendary" than Jake's, IMO, is terribly misguided.

Laurie Koehn wasn't the best, and arguably not even the second-best player on her own team. She never made the All-Big 12 first team. She was, pure and simple, a three-point shooting specialist. As good as it gets in that regard, but nowhere near the complete basketball player that Jake is. Not even worthy of the same discussion.

It's also worth noting that despite the talent around her--and it was significant, that she never made it to the elite eight, and only made it past the second round once--her freshman year.

So, legendary 3-pt shooter? Okay. Legendary basketball player? No. A player on Jake's level? Not even close.

Laurie Koehn, Wecker, Ohlde + the history of women's basketball < Jacob Pullen.

Huggins brought a little recognition, Beasley brought more, and Jake & Frank have done the hard work and planted us firmly on the map. Anytime I go to a different part of the country wearing KSU gear, people strike up conversation about Frank and Jake(or the beard guy), and then maybe make a mention of Snyder (moreso in football season).

Jake's the man, his jersey belongs in the rafters, and he is a legend. No doubt about it.

He must be a legend if he went undefeated in Hilton Coliseum. Danny Manning couldn't even sniff one win in there!!!
