I was doing some research for some this contest I'm in, and I needed to find out about the Big West.

OK, you know where this is already going - UC-Riverside is 11-18 and 6-10 in conference. Yahoo has a team report and the following is lifted from there:

In the loss to the Tigers, UC Riverside shot just 35.7 percent, allowed Pacific to amass a 33-26 rebounding advantage and attempted only eight free throws—three of which they missed—and yet the Highlanders had a chance to win in the final five minutes.

“We couldn’t find that one big play,” UC Riverside coach Jim Wooldridge told the Press-Enterprise.

It was the sixth time this season the Highlanders had lost by seven points or fewer. Junior guard Phil Martin said he Highlanders had to find a way to stop the skid.

“It’s frustrating,” Martin told the Press-Enterprise. “It’s like the same sequence of events over and over. Most of the games we’ve lost have been close. … We just have to fight through the fatigue or whatever’s going on and make plays. It’s basketball. We’ve been playing it our whole lives, and it shouldn’t have taken us this long to find it. It should have been five or six games, not 25. We can’t use that as an excuse. You can go to the park and play with 10 strangers and make something happen.”

Replace UC-Riverside with Kansas State and this article would look identical to one written 6 years ago.

Replace either of those with Louisiana Tech, and you'll most likely see the same article as well.

Check out the podcast thing that gives you an audio version of the story at the top...

And just classic Wooly...

Quote
"I would just say this: We're still building for the future," Wooldridge said Friday. "My future's in the hands of the administration here, and how they evaluate what we've done and the progress we've made.  I feel good about these kids we have in the program ... The future's out there to see, and we'll let other people evaluate it."

UC-Riverside seems really snake bit.

Texas Christian University coach Gary Patterson has been hired as Kansas State's 34th football coach, multiple sources have confirmed to GoPowercat.com.  Patterson replaces Ron Prince, who was fired Wednesday. - Tim Fitzgerald   Nov, 7, 2008

I would think it is the bb version of a venus fly trap(only without the ill intent)

I'm not gonna tell my kids to dream about being Michael Jordan, Emmitt Smith, Phil Jackson or Joe Torre...I'm gonna encourage them to be Jim Woolridge...there really can't be anything better than working for 2+ decades in a profession, making millions of dollars and never having to show any kind of success. Wooly's life must be magical.

I bet, or at least like to think that, Wooly's inability to overcome the close losses time and time again absolutely kills him.  Like eats away the lining of your stomach and keeps you awake at night type of frustration.

Wooly has to be a saint to endure this and not hit either his wife or the rock and still come across cool as a cucumber.

The guy looks great.    I would look like a 90yr old if I lived through what he has.

I would seek involvement in local government if I had the time, but as you so aptly pointed out, I have a women's studies test to study for.
