All I did was point out the post office's inefficiency to a woman in line ahead of me. Evidently, I said it too loud.

The clerk looked up, stared me down and then closed her window after the man she was assisting finally (!) decided on the book of stamps he wanted.

DMV, Post office, Porta-potty... Those are the 3 slowest moving lines known to mankind.

Yeah, never point out inefficiency to a postal worker.  Bad idea, j_rake.

I did not do that. I have great respect for the U.S. postal system. I always speak highly of mail men and the postage stamp, the tag team that provides the cheapest and best service in the world.

The clerk was listening to my conversation.

She should have been sniffing out boxes for bombs or something.

the line for the Matterhorn and Space Mountain, those things breaks down like every 20 minutes

also, the line at the T-Bell on the Westside of Manhattan (by taco hut) was insanely slow when I was in college, not sure if it's still that way

I wanted to overnight a package to the East Coast. The clerk told me that it would not arrive overnight. "We can get it there by Tuesday," she said, reminding me that there's no mail on Sunday and that President's Day is on Monday. "That would cost you $34."

I asked her the cost of priority shipping.

"That would be $8.10 and it will arrive by Tuesday."

OK, I told her. Sounds good.

She responds: "So, do you want to go with the priority or the overnight?"

No, because they turned it from a Taco Bell into a Taco Cafe.

For every card/package you drop in the mailbox, you probably have to actually enter the post office once every 50 or so times.

Isn't the hassle of 10 minutes inside worth the overall service you get?

I was at the post office last Saturday to have a package guaranteed to arrive in Denver on Monday. When I filled out the form, I checked "next-day delivery," thinking that because the mail doesn't run on Sunday, Monday would actually be a one day delivery. The lady told me that they would deliver the package on Sunday, but it would be very expensive. I told her that it didn't need to be there until Monday, anyways, and I changed it to 2 day delivery.

Boring story, but I had no idea that the post office was actually capable of delivering packages on Sunday.

Once a postal worker refused to let me use my credit card to ship something because it wasn't signed on the back.  I signed it in front of her and she told me she wouldn't accept any card from me then and I had to pay cash.  After I showed her my drivers license, she still refused.  I told her to go eff herself* and went to the post office on the other side of town.

Who said anything about 10 minutes? I was in the post office for 30-plus.

As for the overall service, jesus, I've said it a million times: I'd pay $1 a stamp. The postage stamp is an incredible service and is still way too cheap. Maybe if they raised the price of stamps to a half dollar or 75 cents they could pay an extra clerk to work one of the four closed windows.

Seriously, four of five windows were closed — during lunch hour.

Go bleep yourself, post office!

If I could stop mail I would.  For some reason people are using the P.O. to ship things now and unbelievably, the last two things that have been shipped to me have gotten lost for a period of time.  As you can imagine they are awesome at customer service too.
