The battle lines have been draw.

Charlie Weis and LHC Bill Snyder are going head-to-head in their first major recruiting battle. In the center of it is Butler County (Kan.) Community College defensive tackle Chaquil Reed.

Reed, one of the top prospects in the Kansas Jayhawk Junior Community College Conference, committed to Kansas recently and raved about the Jayhawks after an official visit to Lawrence.

"There's a great opportunity at Kansas," he said after his commitment to KU. "You could really start to help build something there."

But the commitment didn't stop the 6-foot-3, 290-pound defensive tackle from taking an official visit to Kansas State this weekend. While on campus in Manhattan, Reed tweeted "I hate bein lied to an thats why my options opend back up."

When he returned from his official visit to K-State, Reed said he had a good time and enjoyed his visit with the Wildcats. Reed also said he remains up in the air about his final destination.

"I'm not making my decision until Tuesday," Reed said.

Reed didn't want to elaborate on what his status is.

Is he still with the Jayhawks, or has he flipped to the Wildcats?

The answer to that question and who wins in the first battle between Weis and Snyder should come soon.

WRSOAT.  Who really thought they actually closed the deal on a DT?

Texas Christian University coach Gary Patterson has been hired as Kansas State's 34th football coach, multiple sources have confirmed to GoPowercat.com.  Patterson replaces Ron Prince, who was fired Wednesday. - Tim Fitzgerald   Nov, 7, 2008

Crabtree tweeted that we had a good recruiting weekend, but for the life of me I cannot find any info to support this claim.

10 years ago we signed great classes. Why do we fail to attract and close the deal on some fairly elite prospects? our last 4 star high schooler was Demarcus Robinson and so far he hasnt seen the field.

10 years ago, Snyder signed the foundation for two back-to-back losing seasons.

Correct.  Every other year or so we have to remind a new crop of posters, but it's clear.  KSU hasn't recruited at a Big 12 Championship level since prior to 2000.  Remember, players are recruited as much as 2-3 years before they step on campus.

He lost his recruiters.  Recruiting is harder.  He has gone to great lengths convincing people that we just can't get a certain level of recruit and it becomes a self fulfilling prophesy.

I won't knock the Judah Jones recruitment, because that may pay off and it's very, very low risk since he's a gray shirt.  No probs.  However, I think the kid is lying about the Arkansas offer.  Arkansas MIGHT have offered at one point, but ship obviously sailed.

Burton is another kid who may end up redshirting.  He's local, and was hurt, so maybe he slid under the radar of other schools.  Perfect storm.

Clark is a great get.  I completely acknowledge that.  Great job Snyder.

.....now, that defense......

I'm fine with all those guys.  Clark kind of fell in our lap because he was going to Pitt until Graham left for ASU.  Rooks was the same way and those are probably our two best pickups along with Bender.  Burton is a local kid with some ablity he's worthy of a ship in any era.  Jones has some speed and as pointed out he's low risk.  A cretain percentage of KSU recruiting was always be about evaluating and finding kids like this that slip through the cracks.

The thing is it can't be your entire class of diamonds in the rough.  Burton is nice and all but he shouldn't be one of the best recruits in the class and he is.  Clark is good but he shouldn't be our single best recruit and he is.  We won next to no recruiting battles this year and pretty much none in January.  The only battle we did win was for a reach of a juco DT that shouldn't have been a big 12 player at all except for the fact that both KSU and KU's recruiting is pathetic this year.   I'm generally more sunshine the most and I don't buy into recruiting rankings in the least.  I said last year's class was good despite the low rankings I thought we filled needs and got some good players.  This year's class is a steaming pile of dogshit.

ESPN Insider now breaks all of our recruiting news.  May have to do that ESPN magazine deal to get that.  I will have to swing by the recycling container on my way back into the house to throw away the actual magazine every month though as I don't think I want that pile of crap in my house.
