I've been asked at least half a dozen times about how I have been influenced by Tiger Woods.

How many hilarious responses do you have cued up?

That's what I was thinking.  MIR could go into a long rant about how he's modded his phone so he can discreetly text all his bitches or something.

golf.  a game of losers.

Pretty easy to tell who in this thread tried golf but found out quickly they really sucked at it.  Only a really sucky golfer, or a morbidly obese person would hate golf.

I was dealing with a torn rotator cuff last golf season so only got to play 5 times and no questions about Eldrick then.  Times I was asked before I wanted to inform them that we were actually allowed to play golf before 1996, but I just tell them that I am the same age as Tiger and I started playing for fun in high school at the Golden Locket in GC.  The golf course isn't the best time to reinforce negative stereotypes.

BTW what do you guys think about joining up with slower groups you catch up with on the course?  I obviously hate doing it.  It used to be awkward telling guys no, now I have done it enough that I don't feel bad at all.

The snow is melting, which got me to thinking about golf, which got me to thinking about playing golf, which got me to thinking about what makes me most nervous about golf: Playing w/ people you've never played with before.

Anybody else hate this? The idea of having to "prove" yourself to somebody new is just so annoying/uncomfortable. The first tee is the ultimate first impression; duff it or slice it and the walk to your ball is miserable. Your playing partners think you are awful, which you very well might be. But maybe not. You might go on to shoot 75.

I am a decent player, but I pretty much always downplay my ability anytime I play with someone new. Then I end up having no confidence and I play like a total schmuck.

Golf ... what a crazy game sport.

It's worse when you are playing a white man's game and you don't want to embarrass your race.  Even the most well intentioned withe dude says something to really make me uncomfortable.  I've been asked at least half a dozen times about how I have been influenced by Tiger Woods.

As for the first tee thing, several times I have told myself that I am going to hit an iron off of the first tee to minimize embarrassment.  I did it once, the first time I played at Sand Creek Station, a group of six BTW and I knew one other guy.  I laced a 5 iron, still felt stupid.

Also why do guys like me who shoot in the 80's and 90's play the tips?  I hate that cac, I don't get paid to play golf, what the eff do I have to prove?

Exactly. If you aren't consistently playing in the 70s, its dumb to play the tips. Play some tees that still make the game fun.

And I hate slow groups that don't let you play through.  If you're an 80s/90s golfer then you don't need to take 5 minutes sizing up your shots.

I don't take practice swings. I just step up to my ball and hit it. There's nothing worse than playing with somebody who shoots in the upper 90s but takes three practice swings before every shot.

Other things that are awkward about golf:

—Gimmes. I don't take them. I like to putt everything out. But some people always take them, and let's just say we have different definitions of what a gimme is (some say gimmes are anything within a putters-length, others say a grip's length.) One guy I played with said he takes everything within a body's length (dude was about 6-foot-5, too.) At least he admitted that he was a total hack and just liked to drink.

—Cheaters. Whether it's on the course or on the score card, it still ticks me off. Keep in mind, if it's some random guy I don't know, this doesn't bother me. But if I'm playing with a friend who I've never played with before, and the scorecard dictates who buys drinks or who gets razzed for the next five hours, then yeah, I'm annoyed.

I'm fine with practice swings, as long as its not overdone. I usually take one on most shots.

Gimmees depend on who I play with. Some guys I play with give them, so I take them and give them back. Usually 3 feet and in. Others putt everything out, and I'm fine with that.

Unless its some sort of competition, I'm pretty meh on people who don't count every stroke.

If i didn't take a practice swing or two...my 80s and 90's would turn into 110s.

Agree with _FAN on the stroke thing. No competition, i don't care.

I don't not do it because I suck.  I don't do it because my mind fucks with me on the practice.

I am much better at golf:
1. after 3 beers, but no more than 6.

2. If I get my swing out of the way as fast as possible.

Also, I would like to say that, when golfing with unknowns, it is worse for me to hit a great first drive, than a bad first drive.  Lots of folks suck at golf.  When your first shot is bad, expectations are immediately set at an appropriate level.  Really sucks though when everyone thinks you are amazing because you pounded your first drive, then spend the rest of the 18 trying to coax another good shot out of you.

Right. If I'm playing with someone I know, and it's competitive, I like to count every stroke, putt everything out, no mulligans, etc. If I'm playing with a total stranger that I'll never see again, I could care less what he does.*

*Unless he takes three practice swings before every shot, takes gimmes on every hole and regularly tees up mulligans even when his first ball is in play.

What good are your state rings when 30 days from now you won't even be able to fit them on your fat fingers?

Oh, wait ...

I'm in, and I never play from the tips so this tournament needs to be from the whites TIA.  You think we could get Frank Martin to be a special guest to this thing?

considering this site was responsible for doubling frank's salary i would think it's the least he could do.

i'm pretty sure i would win this thing if it was held, would love to smash my scorecard in some of your faces after i win with all birdies/eagles on every single hole

I like to give them tips on the holes on the courses that i'm familiar with (gooney golf, safari golf).  We loosen up by the spider hole and by the ostrich hole we are the best of friends.
Where did you get that overnight bag?
