Knee Surgery
« on: February 16, 2010, 01:17:11 PM »
So in true Bill Walker fashion (maybe worse) I tore my MCL, ACL and meniscus totally dunking on this guy (ok I was actually getting a rebound).  This was a couple months back.  Anywho, I'm going in for ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair on Thursday.  Have any of you doodz had this sort of thing done before?  Should I be all  :ohno:  :ohno: and  :bawl:  :bawl: or will everything be     I know what my surgeon is telling me but what do they really know.

Pretty standard procedure.  Rehab is the hard part (I have not had this just from talking to my friends)

Messed my knee up during my final semester.  Used my rehab to fulfill that ancient Phys. Ed. credit.  Probably would have been easier just to take the class....they worked my ass off on that stationary bike and weight machine.

KSU is the worst place in the world to find parking for handicapped, too.

I liked the painkillers, though.

make sure you get morphine postop.  expect rehab to hurt.  don't expect to enjoy kneeling for several years (if ever again).   :frown:  4-6 months is for elite athletes with extreme incentives to return to peak performance asap.

I've already told them that I want to the most powerful of the powerful drugs they can give me post-op.  I think I can handle the pain at least knowing that my knee isn't going to fall apart.  That's been the problem so far, knowing that if I slip on the ice/snow there is really not much holding my knee together right now.  I already gave away my basketball shoes and won't have to get out the golf shoes this year prolly.  This sucks.     :embarrassed:

get morphine specifically.  it doesn't just make the pain go away, it's a lot of fun.

yeah, the rehab is just pain tolerance (and boring, repetitive activities), no big deal.  it'll go fast.  i'd guess you could golf again real soon.

have a have meniscus repairs in each knee, along with a new ACL/micro fracture in one.  The physical therapy sucks at first but you will come to enjoy it as you will begin to see progress and it gives you some physical activity when on crutches.

The worst part about knee surgery after the competitive playing days are over is once you get back to "normal" there is no incentive to do the extra work to get back to full strength.

I gave up hoops after two knee surgeries and as a result one leg was visibly smaller than the other from the loss of muscle from being on crutches for 6 to 8 weeks.  If you are like me, plan to spend some out of pocket cash on a personal trainer to get back to where you were starting 6 to 8 months after your surgery.  Good luck, hopefully your knee is not any worse than the MRI showed. :crossfingers:

Morphine ruined St. Patty's day 2006 for me.  Spent the whole night scratching myself laying on my living room floor thinking I could fall asleep or throw up at any point but not doing either.

True.  My left quad is still about half the size of my right.  And it's been 10+ years.

My girlfriend had only a minor tear and the doctor surgerized the crap out of it about a year ago. She was on an athletic scholarship here at KSU, nothing went right, surgery, rehab, coaches and trainers communication, nothing. Still on schol, but not participating. Lots of pain and moping for 4+ months

I've had both knees shredded and reconstructed.

The surgery part is pretty easy.  I opted to stay overnight in the hospital both times, but they'll let you leave after you wake up if you want.  Also, if they suggest you rent a machine to move your leg automatically while lying in bed at home -- pass.  It's not worth it.

Physical therapy was a big m-f'ing bitch for me.  There's one day that comes along where they just lie on your leg and bend your knee for you, and you'll literally be screaming as the scar tissue rips.  So, you've got that to look forward to.  OTOH, I haven't stopped being active even with both knees done.  I played soccer for years afterward and I've been downhill and water skiing, none of which is recommended.  I've also been able to run again, but not more than 3-4 miles max.  Your knees will always be sore after exercise, but you get used to it and it's nothing a little aspirin doesn't resolve.  I did pretty much stop playing basketball and tennis, though.  Too much torque.

P.S. Empty your bladder and bowels thoroughly BEFORE the surgery.

Good luck!

Torn ACL twice in right knee, once in left knee. I am pretty miserable still, never the same. Will be getting another scope in March. I was told I can't play bball, ski, or anything like that. And I played ball about 6 days a week.

it sounds like you did it wrong.  my experiences have been 1000% positive.  no itching.

Thanks for the advice doodz.  My PT girl told me that I'm going to hate her by the end of this and that the surgery is the easy part.  Oh happy day.  The funny thing is that I played two years of b-ball in college (practice 3 hrs a day plus games etc) and never got hurt, not even once.  I graduate and broke my ankle Dec 08 and then tear everything in my knee in Nov 09.  I apparently do not age well.

So if you see any strange post Thursday evening and thereafter, it's the morphine talking....just FYI.

Tore cartilage in my knee. Could actually feel crap floating around. They did one surgery to get it out. Well about 3 months later, more crap was floating around. So they went in all harcore and implanted some cartilage directly into my bone. Couldn't put weight on it for 6 weeks. PT was the crappiest. Gave up on sports after that. Everything seems OK now though.

Just keep your meds at your bedside.  I once woke up in the middle of the night after my meds had worn off and it was the worst pain I've ever felt.  Showering with saran wrap around your leg is always going to suck.  Just suck it up until your PT begins - those electrical stimulation sessions feel oh so good.
