A few notes and observations about the game tonight.
« on: January 24, 2011, 10:53:36 PM »
Wow, JYC in the first half!  Too bad the buckets didn't fall.  Great intensity.

Sprads was made to play Baylor.  He's a taller guard, shoots great from deep.  BU doesn't pressure guards for crap.  This is the polar opposite of a team like MU.

LOL at Perry Jones III FT shooting, it was like a gift every time he went to the line.

WTF were we trying to do on offense from around 12 to 10 minutes left in the 2nd half?

Jake played great defense and made some "veteran" moves on offense (forcing the reach/hand chack on Dunn late in the second.

LOL at Frank screaming at Sprads late in the second and Sprads replying "what do you want me to do?" while looking annoyed.

LOL at JO blatant travel on Oreb late with 2:13 to go in the 2nd half.

Back to the offense at 12 min and defense at 10 min in the second half.  JFC, Frank do you hate continuity?

The last 6 or so was confusing looked like we started to play to hold on instead of put BU away.

Was I the only one screaming(positively) at the TV in the first half and during the first 10 minutes of the second.

Also, nice shot of Pak head and 17ers late in the first half.

JYC!

FT rate of 59.6%!

OR% of 46.7%!

Lots of things to see in this game, namely this was a "K-State plays harder than any team in America" game.  We outplayed circles around Baylor the first 15 minutes, but once again wasted possessions and silly mistakes allowed BU to stick around.  For about 8-9 minutes Baylor outplayed us and they led by one, then fueled by some threes we built the lead an held it.

I knew Baylor was long, but you really don't see it on TV, in person they are just ridiculously long. You could tell it bothered our bigs and in the first half we constantly got the ball down in their defense but didn't draw contact. We'd try to jump with them and then changed our shots often. Frustrating to watch, but I can see how it happens.

Their zone is unconventional, almost amoebic. B/c they are so long, it make it very tough to be quick with your passing, which you have to do to get the zone out of shape.  Plus, like I said, their bigs really bother you when you get inside of it. They are actually pretty solid defensively when they play like they did tonight, but of course we don't have the best guards in the world.

Drew took a chance and went man pretty much the last 8 minutes. I thought we really did a nice job the first few possessions isolating our bigs and drawing fouls, we were very effective for about 3 to 4 possessions.  Then Drew called timeout and actually made some really nice adjustments.  They started fronting our bigs and switching on all big to big screens and it really messed us up offensively. So I'll give him some credit; it is pretty tough to go from their zone, to man where you dominate for a few possession, to an adjusted man where you mix things up. As much as I agree with the dogging of Drew, he did a nice job there with his use of man defense.

And both sides of the Sprads stuff just need to stop. He's a nice FR player, sort of this year's version of McGruder. He may have a nice future, and clearly this team needs him.  But he is going to have bad match-ups where he struggles and he's going to go through at least one more FR funk.  So lay off, both with the love and the hate and let him play.

Again, we need guys like Curt to quit playing dumb (its pretty clear Frank hates him, but knows he's got to be out there), hope McGrud's concussion isn't too severe, and we have to get more offense from Jamar.

Finally, this was our best perimeter defensive game of the season, and Pullen was simply lights out on Dunn defensively.  McGruds in a tough match-up was very good, and both Southwell and Sprads gave some nice defensive minutes. Samuels also did nice especially in bad match-ups, then JHR and Kelly... well they had their moments.

Good win. Defense and rebounding like that can win 6 more games in this league, but how many games can we play with that effort.  We're probably going to have a couple games where you just have to outscore/outshoot an opponent and its those I'm not sure we can win.

They are about what we are and they played really hard today. They'll be a .500ish Big 12 bubble team. I'm not saying we beat the #1 team in the country or anthing, but there are some nice things to take from this win.

1st half defense was incredibly good.

i thought kstate's offense looked a lot better against bu's 2-3 than against their man or their junk zone (1-3-1?, some sort of matchup thing?, not sure exactly what it was).

a lot of their points in the 2nd came from just spreading the court and letting love penetrate.  prolly not a successful long-term strategy for them, but it worked today.  he'll be good eventually; fastest guard in the big 12.

The first 4 possessions after BU went man the offense was extremely good.  Ball reversals and isos for the bigs led to FTs for Kelly and JHR.  Then Pullen got fouled on a drive.  Finally Kelly hit a putback after JHR got a nice look and missed and we build the lead to 13. Then Drew adjusted and we struggled.

For the most part K-State played really good defense.

On offense K-State looked good for about 7 minutes.

The rest of the time it was one of the biggest cluster f_cks I've ever seen on a basketball court.

But couple right fit recruiting, with high school head games and this is what you get.   It is what it is.

1. the white lumberjack is not as good of a dancer than the black lumberjack

2.  Not complaining, but why did our O continually have jake flashing to the low post in the middle of BU's 2-3?

3. Sprads best game of the year.  Tucks are retiring his jersey in their heads with every made FT.

4. Jake looked great on D

5. rodney had rebound of the game toward the middle of the second half.  He is amazing.

6. loved Jamar's D

7. Wish we got the ball to Curt more in the post

8. Nick can die in a fire.

9. The tucks and half the rest are one rebound tapped out of bounds away from booing the crap out of JO.

Its sort of a token cutter, but against a zone, the main intent is to get movement with your guards/perimeter players which in turn creates movement in the zone. One of the main problems we had was we were way too slow much of the time moving the ball against their zone, but I think part of it was being tentative. Baylor is so long everywhere that they make it tough to get passes across, into, and around their zone when they are playing active.

I was disappointed we didn't use more of the back ball screen look against the outside perimeter players of the zone like we did to get Pullen a shot late in the first half.

Last year we really hurt Baylor's zone by getting the ball into the high post and playing off of that, I thought they did a good job of taking that away. Plus in the first half we had several open elbow jumpers from our bigs and we missed. After that Baylor never really treated that as a threat.

5. rodney had rebound of the game toward the middle of the second half.  He is amazing.

That was a huge board and ended in a Pullen three and pushed the lead back to 9 about midway through the 2nd half. Huge play and Frank gave everyone on the floor a high five when Baylor called timeout after.

7. Wish we got the ball to Curt more in the post

Part of that is the offense, but part is on Curt. He goes through so many stretches where he really doesn't work to get open and make himself a threat.
