I set screens in my old man league, but doing it in a pickup game is a little "I care too much about the outcome of this meaningless game" for me.

no, denied. Setting screens requires little to no effort.

has there ever been a time in the history of pickup games where the guy bringing up the ball doesn't get a pick immediately once he's near the three point line?

Maybe every pickup game in history has been full of guys trying way too hard????  :surprised:

Yes, same guy who let the pass go flying out of bounds out of spite also frequently brought the ball up and drove to the basket before the rest of the team was at the 3-point line to set a pick.

You might want to sit down for this - he seemed to think he got fouled when his shot didn't go in.

Intramurals. Then community leagues (different than pickup games)

Only thing confirmed is that you are the guy who plays basketball in cutoffs and tims if you're black or hispanic or vans if you're white or asian.

75% of my offensive game is predicated off of setting the high screen.  Either roll to the basket, flatten out, or stay home for a kickback.  Properly setting the high screen and playing off of it is for HBBIQers only.

this is my impression of you -> "BALL! BALL! BALL! *CLAP CLAP* BALL! BALL!"........ "THAT WAS A FOUL MAN!!!!!!!!"......... "NO!!! ITS 14-13!!!! NOT 14-14!!!!!!!!"

also, you are playing in a PICKUP GAME. Pass the ball, take a shot if you are open, play a little... LITTLE bit of defense. Trying as hard as you can in a pickup game is for douches.

For a lot of people, the primary reason to play pickup is to get some exercise. You can move a little on offense, play a little defense, chase down a few fast breaks, and still not play as hard as you can (which does make one a douche). There is a lot of middle ground here.

The guy setting screens would be the last guy crying about fouls and begging for every pass.  Do you know what a screen is?  It would seem those things would be incongruous with a screener.

It seems FP, TC, etc is living up to the name.  I bet you're knockout guy.

I play in a rec league, where I think setting screens etc is perfectly fine.

I just think it's stupid to do it in a pickup game.

I do enjoy knockout now and again though  :shakesfist:

Exactly. I'm a high-post, ball-screen guy myself. God help me if I'm ever so lazy that I can't muster the effort to stop moving entirely and just stand in someone's way.

I think there is an even mix in my group of people who played ball back in high school, and people who never played, but find it a better way to stay in shape than running on a treadmill.

The latter group is chock full of screen setters (leading with forearms/elbows), crazy-intense rebounders who have no regard for their ankles or other people's backs, and in-your-face defenders.

I hate them, generally.

A couple of more questions/thoughts/rants after tonight's games at the Y here in Wichita:

* At the Northwest Y, we always play full-court games to 15 on 1's and 2's. Elsewhere, it's seems split on going to 11 and 15. I've always preferred 15 because some guy going unconscious for 3 or 4 shots won't completely sink you. Curious on other's thoughts on this one.

* In one of the games tonight, there was a pretty controversial play. The ball went out of bounds and while someone else retrieved it, I asked the guy I was guarding what the score was. He didn't know, and asked the guy next to him. Nobody knew, but this was just on the left-side of the court. Meanwhile, the ball had apparently been checked in up top and the other team scored an easy basket because half of us were trying to figure out the score. They ended up counting it. I'm not too outspoken on the court, but personally thought this was completely bogus. This ever happen to anyone else? Keeping track of score seems to always be a problem.

* One last question. Say there are 3 players waiting to play on the sideline. Everyone on the losing team is staying and wants to play again. Do you guys usually have the group of 3 pick which two on the losing team they want to play with, or have the losing 5 shoot for the final two spots? Also, some kid got screwed tonight shooting for the final 2 because the 1st and 4th guy made their first shot and he didn't even get to shoot and had to sit out. Felt bad for him. But not too bad, because we kept winning.

2's and 3's to 21. I hate 1's and 2's because 2's are double.

Agreed.  Plus in our games, we get a bonus point for a quality screen.

1) We play 1's to 8 or 12 minutes, whichever comes first. I hate 1's only, but the clock really is great if you have people waiting. I mean I have seen games end the 12 minutes tied at 2. Would be brutal without the clock.
2) I prefer 1's and 2's to 2's and 3's because it seems like it acts as an equalizer more often than it creates a quick game from someone getting hot. A team that looks like it will get destroyed can hang in there or even win with a few 2's.
3) Regarding score checks - most places I've played stops to check it up if there is any score dispute or uncertainty. But it some dumbass on your team checked it up to start play, which makes it kind of different. I would think if there was truly loud bitching as the play was happening it wouldn't have counted. But waiting until the play was over? Dunno.
4) My group picks numbers. The losing team picks 1-5 and the guys sitting call out random numbers to play. Good way to make the games quick. A previous game would shoot for it, but everyone would get a shot. So in your situation it started out 5 for 2. If the poor final soul made it along with 1 and 4, it would be 3 for 2 and there would be another round. If just one person makes it the next round, it's 2 for 1 and so on. Takes forever, but it's fair.
