what if the foul call is made after my team gets the reb?

no ethics problems, but everyone on the court thinks you're a dumbass.

I will just never call fouls on shots. I just can't concentrate enough to make foul calls before the ball hits the rim.

i personally don't have a problem with waiting to see if you score (i understand that lots of courts do).  just can't wait till the ball comes all the way off and is rebounded.

One thing to always do is if you get fouled and make the shot make sure to say "And 1" so that everyone knows you made the shot despite being fouled in the act.

Even then, I am so goddam unathletic/out of breath that I can't process and get the foul call out of my mouth before I slam it off the rim to the other team. NO FOUL CALLS.

Played last Friday with a group of kids from Missouri (or just had some bad genetic things going on).  They were much better than I expected them to be, which was still horrible, but one of the kids was calling out 'and one' every time he got fouled, even when he missed the shot.  The rest of us would just kind of look at each in confusion.  He was being guarded by a former college player who would just kind of laugh and try to not be a jerk.

What are you doing in the paint anyway? It's much harder to get fouled shooting transition 3's.

I am like McOreb. Low possession rate, high OR%, shoot lots of 3's.

Do you play 3's and 2's or 2's and 1's?  Seemed like every time I played at the rec in Manhattan it would go 2's and 1's favoring the slow kids with good set shots.

Guy I work with plays rec ball/pick up games with Bubba Starling's dad.  Says Mr. Starling hacks the crap out of people and claims to be fouled just about every time he shoots.  Says he's impossible to play with because he's such a cheating prick.

2's and 1's. It's really a great equalizer more than anything. Makes it much harder for one team to own the court.

And slow kids with good set shots should be neutralized by anyone trying on defense. It's a little different where I play, because almost everyone knows everyone else's game. No one will just sag off and let me shoot all day. (like they do in the men's league where they don't know me. :gocho:)

Need a ruling here because J-Dub (poster on this site) and I have a disagreement.

We have a Friday afternoon regular game, been going for about a year now.  Today, J-Dub is on a team with 3 other guys who were less athletic than the team I was on (this was in spite of me, I'm fat and slow) yet with great shooting they beat us in the first game.  When we went again, two guys on my team decided to press a little in the back court, this led to J-Dub's team getting sped up and turning it over, but mostly in front court corner traps.

After the game, J-Dub got really cranky and kind of beligerant about the whole thing saying "in street ball (we were in a church mind you) you don't call charges and you don't press".  We all said "Since when?"

My thought is this, if you can press and get away with it, do it.  J-Dub feels that pressing is cheap and ruins the game.  We decided this thread would be the impartial judge on this one.

Thoughts?

 :lynchmob:

I say you play good D any way you can. I think D is an integral part of the game. I myself am not a strong offensive player, so I will D up like I am trying out for the NBA. Sometimes my defensive efforts make up for the fact that most of my shots are airballs.

Besides it was just a pickup game. Who gets mad at pickup games? What's the big deal?

Totally acceptable to press. It's not your team's fault that the other team sucks at dribbling.

pressing = taking and calling charges

Feel free, but you're a douche if you do it. Especially if you're picking on fat sloppy guys and don't have to change up teams (like you are describing).

if someone's really willing to take a charge in a pickup game, more power to them.  charge the crap out of them.

I'm gonna add a little more context.

We have been playing for a year or so. Pretty much the same guys. A couple guys are pretty good, but no world beaters.. Mostly trying to get some exercise, not that competitive.. The newest guy played college baseball, and is easily the best athlete. He's raised our competitiveness level some just by being good.

A guy who hadn't played in months came and brought his bro-in-law who was in town, he's probably the nicest guy i know, bro-in-law seemed really nice as well. And then after knocking down some deep shots and winning the first game - which i was sure we would lose, the athletes come out with a full court press, and half court traps. they bullied the cac out of the nicest guy in the world and his first time meeting/playing with us bro-in-law.

In one year of playing ball with this group we have run a press zero times. zero. but after we won the first game, the athletes pow-wowed and went full Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) on that cac.

I'm just standing on principle here. We are playing pick up ball - non-organizational basketball. And for a year we have gotten along just fine without the billy badass routine..

lol, you can't press in a pick-up game. my goodness.

In fact, you should always try harder on offense than you do on defense in pick-up games. They are the most fun when they are like All-Star games.
