Kansas State Football / Re: Miss ST... the Iowa State of the SEC

I completely understand the point. The conference remark was in direct response to the comment that specifically poked fun at MSU for being in Vanderbilt’s conference while lifting KState’s conference opponents. As for the “perception” thing that keeps getting brought up, that’s where you guys keep missing the point. KState just doesn’t have the recognition you think it has. I understand how easy it is to fool yourself about how well perceived your team is, but you’re in a bubble. When most college sports fans outside of Kansas think of Kansas, they think KU basketball and that’s it. The national perceptions of KState and MSU are a lot closer than you think.

Decades of completely convincing myself it’s our year to beat Alabama, then watching Alabama destroy us caused me to learn a few therapeutic techniques.

So just to get a clear idea: KState is in the same league as OU, Texas, OkState, umm Baylor? TCU? So they’re used to the big boys. MSU is in the same league as Vanderbilt, and therefore not? the same league as Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Florida, Georgia, A&M(at least when it helps your point). You’ve won in the past, and now you’re not winning as much, so football just doesn’t have the same taste it used to have. So when MSU wins Saturday, it won’t really matter because the poor Wildcats are in a slump and no one in Manhattan really cares anymore. Just sounds to me like fans of a team that lost to the worst team in the SEC last year and who want to go ahead and start the psychological damage control.

Just poking a little fun at the difference in self awareness between the two fan bases. I’ve followed MSU every day of my adult life, and I’ve never thought a game mattered as little as some of you guys seem to think this one does. KState has had some great runs, and a lot of sustained success, but to the extent that you only turn up for the Stanfords or Auburns of the world? The past aside, save for the past few years involving current players, what elevates KState above MSU?

Excellent Saturday: a play in 1 act

EXTERIOR. K STATE STADIUM WITH 10k+ SMALLER CAPACITY THAN MSU STADIUM. AFTERNOON.

#1 KState Fan rests back in his chair. Time winds down in the fourth quarter. The scoreboard reads: MSU 49 KSTATE 10.  Darla, #1 KState Fan’s wife, leans in.

DARLA: “I am so saddened by the outcome of today’s sporting event!” *whimper*

#1 KState Fan lets out a hearty laugh.

#1 KSTATE FAN: “Fret not! Did you honestly think we’d have a chance? Especially following that come from behind travesty against South Dakota State?”

DARLA: “What about our 11 win seasons? Our conference championships? Do they count for nothing?!”

#1 KSTATE FAN: “On the contrary, my dear Darla. Those past glories will help to dull the sting of today’s loss! Do you think the players worry about the loss? Do you think Coach Snyder will spend the night in anger? Of course not! He will simply remember the 2012 season, how the team won ELEVEN games, and the joy of losing in the Fiesta Bowl.  Darla, the victory for the Bulldogs will be short lived. They must now return to Mississippi. Imagine Kansas but with trees, hills, rivers, beaches, and way more racially and culturally diverse. Those athletes and coaches must deal day in and day out with an athletic department that generates 20 million more a year in revenue than KState, a collegiate community that cares and invests more in half a dozen sports than we do in just one, and a conference that delivers more exposure in one week than we receive in an entire year. “

DARLA: “Wow #1 KState Fan. You are absolutely right. Please, can we drive home so I can sit on our porch, from which I can see 80 miles in every direction but not spot anything interesting to look at?”

#1 KSTATE FAN: “Yes!”

#1 KState Fan looks to the horizon. There really is nothing to see.
