Kansas State Football / Re: KU football is hurting

how much did Colorado State's new stadium cost?  they should bulldoze that thing and build one of those.

the ending for the sand snakes was pretty awful.  but, I was hoping for something a bit more gruesome - assumed Sir Gregor would explode some heads or something.

also, pretty stupid question, I'm sure, but why isn't Sansa automatically the Queen of the North?  Or, notwithstanding Bran being a complete weirdo/creepster now, shouldn't he automatically be King, whether he wants to or not?  isn't that way monarchy back then worked?

They both have strong claims, but neither would get the throne unless the sitting king decided to give it to them or they managed to get enough support from local nobles to defeat the sitting king in war. Possession was 90% of the law then, too.

yeah, but how did the sitting king (Jon Snow) get it in the first place - other then being a leader/warrior, etc?  as long as the blood line was alive, seems like it would go to the oldest male heir or, if presumed non existed, to the oldest female heir.

Kansas State Football / Re: Is "K-State" Patented?

trademark.

patent is protection for technology, process, technique, etc.

copyright is for work of art, literature, song, movie, etc.

1. Ambassador Hotel expansion - http://maps.kcmo.org/kcgis/rest/services/external/DataLayers/FeatureServer/35/53284/attachments/17300

Holy Toledo - this building design is f'n deplorable.  It's good to fill in a surface lot and density to the CBD, but JFC this development plan is ugly.

2. Gordon Biersch P&L is closing in August and being replaced by Joe's KC.  I've heard.

remember when Meche retired and forewent his guaranteed $12mil salary?  It'd sure be nice if Alex would do that.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that every one of our recent recruits has been wearing a white helmet.

We'll be good this year.  we were good last year.  our recruiting has been pretty good the past few seasons.  Invariably, we'll all start to hear more and more insider stories about how Bill wasn't even really coaching these last 2 seasons and it was basically all Sean behind the scenes running the show.  And enough people will convince themselves that this means Sean is a good enough coach and recruiter to inherit the program.

this is how it's going to work/is working right now.

i don't care that it's chode-like, i just don't want it to look like 1960s dorms

I still don't love it, but the updated rendering is here:  https://www.loewshotels.com/m/loews-kansas-city-convention-center-hotel

More glass makes it less dorm-like, I guess.  but, still looks like an office building.

Mocat, where have you been?  That rendering was scrapped over a year ago.  but, agreed, the new hotel looks like an office building in Corporate Woods.

what's your opinion on the next steps

The City Council circumvented the referendum effort by fixing the ordinance at issue - effectively immunizing the project from further litigation.  Admittedly, I've not wasted my time studying this issue too closely.  Maybe this will be tied up in litigation for another 2 years.  But, from everything I've read, the Loews group is ponying up sufficient private equity to make the project work.  KCMO is providing $35 million from the convention and visitor's tax fund - no $$ from the general fund.  Looks like everything's greenlighted.  Shovels are expected to be in the ground by October with completion anticipated in 2019-2020.  Wish the design were better, but the shortening of the structure was assuredly a cost-cutting measure.

Agreed, if Sean wanted the HC job (and I don't think he does), he needed to go somewhere and be a defensive or offensive coordinator for a while.

really?

I'm not a frequent business traveler, but I do prefer functional plumbing and electricity in my airports.  Though KCI doesn't always have these things, it does have curbside drop-off and short security lines - occasionally.

Can you guys take a crap in your airport before a flight yet?

I don't think so.

That's great for QT and it's shareholders.

and for its customers, obviously.

No I totally get they want to out the same store in every place. It's easy and low cost of design.

also, QT is an interesting case-study in how store design impacts sales.  The Gen3 QT store design isn't motivated simpy by cost and ease - there's a pretty sophisticated logic underlying the design.  The attached article kind of touches on it.  http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/quiktrips-investment-in-retail-employees-pays-off

In 2010, its by-store profit was almost double that of the top quartile of competitors. . . . QuikTrip systematically makes operating decisions that are good for employees, customers, and profits, she says. One principle is simplicity. Instead of customizing stores according to market, QuikTrip uses the same store layout everywhere, along with limited product variety.  The reduced complexity that results from these decisions leads to higher employee productivity and fewer errors," says Ton. This standardization of stores and products also provides flexibility: QuikTrip can easily transfer employees and managers from one store to another."

although the article doesn't discuss it, there have been other case studies detailing the ingress/egress, layout of coffee dispensers, bathrooms, etc. and how it all integrates for a better customer experience.  Long story short, with retailers like QT, their store design is their brand and their competitive advantage.

I still think we as a city should still not just bend over at take whatever BS same design they put in the middle of nowhere at 175th & Lackman  . . .They changed their design in downtown Atlanta.

I mean, it's a gas station for crying out loud.  Every QT I've been in (Gen3) is identical.  Googled the downtown Atlanta store and it's not even a gas station.  It's a prototype gasless C-Store, basically a small grocery store.
No I totally get they want to out the same store in every place. It's easy and low cost of design. The role of the city and neighborhood isn't to just accept that. Want to do business with us....work with us....design something that fits within the context of the location.

what's your design idea to make it better?  smaller, less parking, less pumps?  maybe turn it into a mixed-use coffee shop/community workshop garden?

My question is this: Why is this newsworthy?

maybe because he's one of only 2 openly gay college football players.  just a thought.

yeah, it's not an income tax.  and, since it's not paid for out of the city's general fund, the streetcar is not paid for by a re-allocation of taxpayer's $$$ that would have otherwise gone to fund KCMO schools, police, infrastructure, etc.  So, for KCMO residents like Clams that never come downtown, they never contribute a single penny directly or indirectly to pay for the streetcar.  Even if they spent $5K on meals/entertainment/goods/services from one of the countless new businesses and developments that have popped up within the TDD, their contribution would be a measly $50

this rough ridin' kid is hilarious

Again, if you never step foot in the TDD - which you clearly do not - you'll never contribute a single penny directly or indirectly to pay for the streetcar.  pretty simple for most people to understand.

I'm sure many of the retards on here are just trolling their ignorance of the funding, but fyi...

The TDD funding is 1% sales tax + special assessment on residential/commercial property.  The special property assessment is $0.70 for every $100 in assessed value (residential) and $0.48 for every $100 in assessed value (commercial).  KC issued bonds to pay for the $60million streetcar construction and the TDD funds pay off the bonds.  So every additional structure built within the TDD adds revenue to the TDD, minimizing future payments of the sales tax and property assessment.
