Title: Its going to get worse before it gets better
Post by: ednksu on January 14, 2011, 08:56:15 PM

Never, ever underestimate the collective stupidity of our fanbase. Ever.

...because the comparison is not as similar as you might think. Point #1 - FSU in Florida hotbed of football talent...Point #2 - KSU in Kansas, hotbed of wheat harvesting.  I still cannot see any reason that a realistic replacement for Bill would make anything better, so for now Bill remains and the limited donor funds keep flowing. Still concerned that forcing Bill out would eliminate some of that $$$. A tough situation all around.

We're not recruiting the talent to sustain 8 wins seasons like FSU did. This will end for Bill as a performance issue.

.750 is 9-3. I'd sell my left nut for 9-3. Bill will not go 9-3.

thats what I mean.  that will be the outliers proof that bill can still do a 2003 season. Will that get us into a con champ, probably not in the new big 12.  But it will be enough to keep him around.

it took FSU going from National Champs and dominating conference to 7/6 seasons to make changes.  What will it take for KSU to make changes?  Most of the Tucks will be too happy with that record in the new big 12.

We are a middling 5-7 to 7-5 program. No better.  There are 4 seasons of evidence to prove it.

2009 Non-con: 2-2; B12: 4-4 (3-2 North)
2010 Non-con: 4-0; B12: 3-5 (2-3 North) + Bowl loss

Did we improve?  I think we were better at the beginning of 2010 than we were at the end.

this board could have been the best hope to actually start something and accelerate this debacle to its conclusion a year or two ahead of its current course.  Thanks to the number of high school douche bags who just want to jerk each other off and destroy threads that are actually trying to discuss the programs future we wont get anyhwere till rough ridin' Gopo or Kstfans takes the rough ridin' lead.

But hey look at this awesome BBSing that is going on above and below this post!

I have a feeling that post probably wasn't aimed at me, but if it was, all I said was that there's no way in hell Bill even goes 9-3 in an outlier year (and I would think that even most people here would get off of his nuts for a year or two if he did). I think the absolute best he could pull out at this point given his current course is 8-4, and that should've been this year with the Big 12 as weak as it was. But anyway, there is some decent discussion on how to attack this situation in the billboard thread like dlew said. You may wanna consider putting a condensed version of your OP in there to throw your idea in the ring.

Heinballz has some very good stuff regarding this point in the billboard thread.

No it wasn't you.  It was the others.

Post was about FSU and their coaching change that involved the EXACT SAME rough ridin' THING WE ARE GOING THROUGH (caps for others 42, not you).  It took a huge fall for their tucks to get their head out of their ass because dumbass high schoolers did stupid crap like for sale signs in Bobby Bowden's lawn instead of cancelling donations/young alumni ticket purchases and writing op-eds.

What can students do?

for one, stop with the rough ridin' LHC Bill Snyder chants at basketball games

start talking to your parents about all the recruiting if they are donating members and push them to ask questions.

send letters to Currie telling him why donations are stopping

look I'm not rough ridin' delusional thinking they are going to change crap when one row from section 17 cancels donations when one tuck from section 5 donates just the same.  one row becomes two, two to three, three to half a section.

I'm a grad student. Maybe 2-3 of the people I know and work with actually give a damn about KSU sports, and I only know one person outside of this site who has student passes to games. I can't do much other than float the idea of that one person not renewing their passes next year and to have them tell their friends not to. I can maybe put up a facebook or twitter update voicing my displeasure with the current process, but that has limited impact. My parents aren't KSU alums, so they don't donate anyway. About the absolute best I can do right now is not renew my student tickets next semester and send Currie a respectful but firm email as to why. You and I know that it will get thrown in the trash can, and it won't matter if the entire student section stops renewing their tickets because every athletic director in the country, Currie likely included, is practically begging to give away student tickets to John Q. Shirttuck who will pay out the ass for seats on the 50 yard line. I have no say in this matter other than to voice my displeasure here. We don't have strength in numbers as students on this board, which leads me to my next point:

I also mentioned in the billboard thread just how badly we are outnumbered. The LHC Bill Snyder chant in Bramlage at the CU game was almost entirely led by the student section, although I'm sure some shirt tucks/alumni got into it as well. This modern student section does not have an independent streak in their thought process and they buy what their parents and the athletic administration say completely. About the only bitching I ever heard during the football season was that they kept CCQ in the game at times, with the occasional "play some rough ridin' defense" comment thrown in every once in a while. One or two op-eds in the Collegian won't change their minds, no matter how well they are written. Until Snyder starts winning 2-4 games a year for say 3 years straight (which ultimately flat-lines the program), neither the students nor the alums or townies will start to change the culture here. It is easy for the general KSU fanbase to dismiss us because we are the complete minority and we are also extremely vocal, neither of which sits well with them. Just log onto the other boards, you'll find half or 75% of the board saying that if you're a Snyder critic, you're a KU fan. Never mind the fact that they are the ones responsible for perpetuating every KU stereotype that we can't succeed as a program without Snyder, because goddammit, if you question The Legend for keeping an utterly incompetent assistant coach on staff long past his expiration date, then you're obviously NOT A REAL KSU FAN.

That's why I think our best chance is getting something to go viral from here. We saw what happened with the Octagon of Doom. This is the only place where we can really collaborate and where we can apply ourselves to get this resolved. The problem is, we all disagree on how to do it. I think there is a very real danger that we will only harden the resolve of the shirt tucks and students against us if we get too vocal. But if we don't, how else will we bring attention to the problem? I don't know how to answer this.

But if we don't, how else will we bring attention to the problem? I don't know how to answer this.

Great post, especially considering 42 is a former squak

my Op

I'm originally from Florida, grew up loving FSU.  Our situation is very similar to FSU in the early/mid 2000s.  Bobby wanted to pass the program onto one of his sons.  He hired Jeff in 1994 and he moved to offensive coordinator after Mark Richt left for Georgia.  At the time their shirt tucks were 'meh' with the move.  Florida has nepotism laws which made the hire even more difficult to justify and work around (Jeff had to 'report' to the DC Mickey Andrews).  Florida State's high powered offense was reduced to a team that was shut out at home by Wake Forest.  Bobby refused to look for replacements.  It took 5 years of destruction before Jeff was forced out.  From 2001 to 2004ish things limped by.  FSU got by on name and left over players made things work.  A few years into the Jeff experiment the pieces began to fall apart.  QB development floundered.  Highly rated qbs came in and did nothing (X Lee).  RBs and WRs made the offense work on skill alone.  Then the line started to go.  Now the RBs were getting hammered and WRs weren't getting the ball because the QBs were running for their lives.  FSU students were quick to find fault with the Youngest Bowden, their shirt tucks did not see a problem.  The situation escalated causing a pretty decent rift between old and new fans.  Old fans knew that FSU football was nothing before Bobby and Bobby could do no wrong (sound familiar?).  Newer fans only knew winning, competing for National Championships and unquestioned dominance of the ACC.  When the winning went away the young fans turned quickly, it took the shirt tucks a long time.

The end of Jeff Bowden
In 2006 Jeff struck a deal with boosters to go away.  The shirt tucks had enough when they were shut out at home by Wake.  FSU could no longer compete with Florida in recruiting and worse yet at Doak Campbell (look up Steve Spurrier's record @ Doak).  The damage was profound.  USF was beating FSU out for recruits even.  Only 3 years later the unfathomable happened; USF over FSU in 2009.  Years of damage, years to repair.

Shirt tucks
The shirt tucks finally saw the light with the Bowden to Bowden succession fiasco.  The knew they had to get a real succession in place.  In 2005 to 06 they negotiated a buyout of Jeff's contract because Bobby refused to do anything about it.  The AD at FSU didn't really force Jeff out either.  Bobby had total institutional control.  Their shirt tucks forced Jeff out without much support of the actual department in my opinion.

Bobby
The shirt tucks forced a newerish bloodline into the FSU coaching staff with Jimbo Fisher.   Jimbo has some connections to the family, but had proved some worth.  When he came in it was only about a year for the succession to fall to Jimbo.  People were afraid they were going to lose this aspiring coach to a head coaching position somewhere else.  Even after being named HCIW it took him nearly walking out to force Bobby out.  When Bobby left the old school shirt tucks had terrible remorse.  They knew Bobby would have to go eventually but didn't like the idea of forcing out Bobby for Jimbo.

For KSU
I don't think we can hope for as nice a succession as FSU.  Our hope for that kind of changed were dashed when Snyder left the first time.  It would have been ideal to have a HCIW or hand picked successor in the mid 2000s when he left the first time.  Unfortunately Ron failed too hard too fast.  Prince's records were the shock and awe required to cause a coach like Snyder to leave/be forced out.  Because of Snyder coming back the way he did it will take drastic destruction of the program to cause the level of shock required to force him out.  If he maintains .500 record and goes to a bowl and is competitive it will take more then Currie summon to oust Bill because of our shirt tucks. That kind of mediocrity will be enough for shirt tucks to believe the next 2003 is right around the corner.   If Cosh stays and Sean is promoted the worst thing in the world for real change would be a .500 +1 or +2 win season.  The only hope we have right now in the new big12 is complete face plant in conference play and some noncon losses.

Our shirt tucks
We either have to ride out a terrible storm of KSU beatings from KU, MU and ISU.  Whether or not they can is to be seen.  The younger fans will have to adopt an US versus Tucks mentality.  This means aggressively pointing out short comings in a constructive manner.  For Sale signs on Bills front yard will only harden the Tucks revolve against meaningful change.  This means constructive critical posts, articles/op-eds and letters to Currie explaining why your donation isn't coming.

At the end of the day people have to realize that Snyder gave us a great gift.  He along with an amazing supporting cast put KSU and KSU football on the map.  That is undeniable.  But the institution is not his alone.  its all of ours.  Anyone who pays a damn dime of tuition or a percent of salary to the Ahearn Fund should have a say and a voice.  Just because Bill made this program doesn't mean he gets to do with it entirely has he pleases.  His son is not a proven winner and KSU deserves a chance at winning over a chance at nepotism.  Our University has had too many great men and women lead it, support it and learn at it to have one man alone drive us to mediocrity.

I agree with a lot of the real talk in this thread

Maybe there is one thing we can do. I'm going to try and get in touch with some people at Bring on the Cats. They might be sympathetic to the idea of featuring our viewpoint.

I also mentioned in the billboard thread just how badly we are outnumbered. The LHC Bill Snyder chant in Bramlage at the CU game was almost entirely led by the student section, although I'm sure some shirt tucks/alumni got into it as well.

Was thinking I could help on this by getting the word out that Snyder Chanters will be choked.  Won't be able to start this today though.  Will have the little bro with me.

T42YS, dlew, other right-minded individuals, holler at me today if you'll be at the game.  We can pak before or after and brainstorm some actual actions that can be done.

Can probably be there not much past 11.  Leaving 'ta at 9 and have to pick up some tickets once there.

If R-A-B is packed/pak'd, we can go somewhere else once we meet up.

If our collective fanbase needs a collective barometer as to how badly we have fallen, it should be how we have fared against Missouri recently. We have gone from kicking their ass up and down, to them returning the favor...and they're a good team but not a great one. We have a 5 game losing streak against them, and it could easily be 7...dating back to precisely when our slide started.

I think one thing is getting lost in all of this talk about billboards and word of mouth and banners.  42 mentioned it in his diatribe.

An organized social media campaign could spread like wildfire.  There are undoubtedly people outside of this message board that agree with our viewpoint.  Start a viral campaign on Facebook and Twitter and Youtube.  We don't need to spend any money.

I know some people otherwise in the "shirt tuck" demographic that were/are opposed to bringing Snyder back. But you won't reach them on "social media". Because if they regularly use a computer, they're already sucked in by the shirt tuck internet cult.

But even then, it's going to take another mediocre season with a terrible defense to mobilize them. Recruiting is a minimal factor for the most part, because they barely pay attention to it.

I have no idea what you mean by your first paragraph. Can you restate your point for retards like me? Pretend I'm 7 years old.

I agree with the recruiting point, but that just means it needs to be addressed in the campaign.  We need to bring the WRSOAT to their attention.

It won't work because the old, reliable defense they've used to defend his recruiting is, "Jordy Nelson, Terence Newman, Josh Buhl, etc."

They don't realize that every program stumbles upon lightly recruited players that work out well in the end.  But because KSU was bad for so long, they think he has some sort of magic radar to find every under-recruited gem of a player.

You may as well not even go down that road because the GoPowercat Illuminati will just fire up the propaganda machine to counter whatever logical argument you come up with.

Then this is all rough ridin' pointless is what you're saying.  You're saying it's all pointless then.  Great.  Why the eff are we even talking about this seriously?  Let's just continue the fun (but utterly pointless) bbs'n instead of wasting our time trying to be serious about this.

No, I'm not.  Stop panicking.

All I'm saying is that recruiting won't be an effective argument for them.  For every ten examples of shitty players we provide, they'll provide some two star that worked out well.  And it will work for them, they'll shake their heads in agreement, and then write us off as 'sqwaks'.

The most effective thing that even the most ardent shirt tuck will have to agree with is how loyal Bill is to his assistants.  If you can prove he's promoting loyalty over the betterment of the program, then you can incite the moderate shirt tucks and get the mob behind you.

Pick your battles.  Don't die on that hill if you don't have to.

People still think our DOD teams were all 2 star nobodies. We coached them all up. Every one of them.

I was very surprised at the reaction to the fire cosh sign at the basketball game today.  Honestly the  :horrorsurprise: perfectly describes the reaction of all the shirt tucks.  It was like they couldn't believe that someone said what they were all thinking at one point or another this season.

I was very happy to hear that after the initial shock there were some claps and not too much moaning.

We are a middling 5-7 to 7-5 program. No better.  There are 4 seasons of evidence to prove it.

Which should surprise exactly no one as that was Snyder's stated goal when he arrived at KSU.  That and to challenge for a conference title every once in a while.  He's just doing exactly what he said he'd do when he got here.

I'd go off on a rant given the demographic and social disposition of a lot of these people, but I won't.

Let's just say that my biggest problem with K-State is the fact that I usually have to attend the games with K-State fans, who I vehemently disagree with on nearly all things non-KSU related.

Meh...you're being a bit melodramatic.  I have a lot of K-State friends that I see eye-to-eye with on "non-KSU related" issues.  Matter of fact, I tend not to associate much with people that I don't at least mostly agree with on "non-KSU related" issues.  I've spent enough time around "those people" to know they bring nothing intelligent, funny or interesting to the table.  Waste of my rough ridin' time.

You can hang out with me and my homies.  We cool.

Really interesting comparo ednksu, I had forgotten the nepotism aspect of what happened at FSU and it plays into my most  :jeffy: theory.  My biggest fear is Snyder has built a staff that will be happy to just keep getting their 6 figure salaries and will fully support a Sean Snyder take over in 2 or 3 years.

If Cosh is still DC after signing day and SS is added to the staff......

I think that we are all blowing this Sean thing out of proportion... Sean is an administrator and he is very good at what he does. He makes a ton of money doing it, I don't think that he even has any desire to take over the head coaching job.

Student do the Snyder chant because most of them don't really give a damn about the success of the teams.

Student behavior will have nearly zero impact on coaching decisions. It is really out of their hands, so sneak some liquor into the OOD and enjoy yourselves.
