Title: Concerts I've attended in Wichita
Post by: michigancat on December 30, 2010, 08:00:23 AM
Most of these are from my high school days.

The first:

No Doubt opening for Goo Goo Dolls and Bush at the Kansas Coliseum.

At this point, No Doubt basically had one hit - "I'm Just a Girl" (and maybe "Spiderwebs").  I was like 14 and Gwen Stefani was not a household name but she was hot to my lame high school kurt cobain wannabe ass.  My dad would take me to these (because I was 14) and he got a kick out of their horn section, who for some reason was never considered part of the real band.

Goo Goo Dolls were next, and they were basically right after "Name" was released to radio.  "Name" was their only song that used an acoustic guitar at that time.  This was what most of their stuff sounded like at the time:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c66WZtvKmI4  And they were pretty good.

Bush was kind of lame.  They only had one album out and that was all they played from (the one that had Machine Head and Glycerine).  Gavin had nice hair.

More to come.

Every Kansas kid ever in the entire world was at that concert.

sd addition:  Collective Soul at the Cotillion Ballroom around that same time

It was amazing.   Did not go to Collective Soul.  (they were not "heavy" enough for me)

sd addition:  The old "Oz" Fests that weren't connected to the white trashy "Ozz" Fests but were instead KStateo versions with non-white trash bands.  I think I saw, like, Marcy Playground, Sugar Ray, Smashmouth, misc other basically one hit 90s alt/pop bands.

Yeah, the Smithereens were headliners like every year before they got Smashmouth.

I saw Incubus and Hoobastank at the Kansas Colosseum back in 2001.  It may have been 2002.  I don't know; somewhere around there.

Concert #2:

Jawbreaker
Ween
Foo Fighters

at the Cotillion Ballroom.  I LOVE the Cotillion.  It is just unbelievably weird.  Like I said, I was a Nirvana dork, so seeing Dave Grohl was like the next best thing since Cobain was dead.

Jawbreaker:  They were some kind of pop/punk thing.  Pretty OK.

Ween:  At the time, I HATED THEM.  It was Gene and Dean Ween on stage with a drum machine.  No band.  They were playing for a bunch of jerkoff kids and knew it.  They didn't give a eff.  I hated them.  I had a discussion with some other 14 year old alt-douchebag about how it wasn't true music because they didn't have a drummer.  Looking back, I now appreciate how rough ridin' brilliant they were.  I would LOVE to see a video of it.

Foo Fighters:  They were really good.  That first Foo Fighters CD is/was an incredible rock album.  I was right in front of Pat Smear.  I kept trying to get him to give me a guitar pick.  He never did.  I had to get out of there before the encore, and he gave a pick to someone right where I was standing during the encore.  :curse:

My dad wore overalls to this one.

I was at that one, good show....

Also saw Linkin Park with Cyprus Hill around that time too...

A year later I saw Disturbed with Taproot, Chevelle, and Unloco

These were all at the Colosseum

Saw Breaking Benjamin at the Cotillion with Evans Blue and some other band I can't remember...

Smashing Pumpkins - Kansas Coliseum '96  << they had weird speakers and none of them were dead yet or kicked out from drugs I think.

at the Coliseum.  This was the first one I attended without a parent.  Had a sweet uniform shirt and chain wallet...I went as "Rod" from Interstate Batteries.

Got in during the middle of EyeHateGod.  They sucked.

Deftones:  Loved them at that age.  Bought their CD immediately after the show.

During the intermission between Deftones and White Zombie, I had a discussion about how shitty the music they were playing between sets was.  (I was such a little shithead).  She was messed up out of her mind and informed me that the music was from the greatest drummer of all time, Mickey Hart.  Who gives a eff.  I also worked my way up to the very front against the railing.  Also chatted up a security guy who was wearing his Oklahoma high school football state championship ring.  I was impressed.

White Zombie:  They were cool.  Felt the heat from their fireworks and crap.  It was during White Zombie that the crowd started to get a little crazy.  I had to leave the railing.  The Mickey Hart girl looked like she was about to pass out.  Back amongst the masses, I began encountering the mosh pits, filled with 300 pound skinheads that looked like they want to kill everyone.  I also crowd surfed at this time, which was rough ridin' awesome, and something I will never do again.

At the end of White Zombie, they released a bunch of confetti.  Rumors were floating that they contained hits of acid.  I did not lick any confetti.

Pantera:  I hadn't really heard any of their music, because it didn't get played on their radio.  Really, this is who the skinheads and crazy fuckers came to see.  The kind of guys who thought they sold out with "Great Southern Trendkill" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opyVdN8GZtc <-seriously, they thought they sold out with this.  I just remember a blur of loudness and elbows and crap, with Anselmo, who seemed ridiculously wasted, only paused to drink Jack Daniels from the bottle and tell fans to start beating the crap out of each other and stop waiting for him to "light his dick on fire" (I think this was a shot at White Zombie).

Good times.

Concert #2:

Jawbreaker
Ween
Foo Fighters

eff, I would love this show today.

Only concert I went to in Wichita was Tool in the summer of 2002. Drove down from KC and hung out at the Colosseum from noon onwards. Talked to Danny Carey's parents (they are from Paola) and then got front row on the railing. The railing kept popping during the show, thought there was going to be an accident. One of Mike Patton's million bands opened and everyone hated them, typical Tool crowd.

Have had many glorious moments inside the Kansas Coliseum that didn't involve the Wichita Wings

Aerosmith - 1990.  My first concert!  Black Crowes opened

Bad Company/Damn Yankees - 1991.  Great show, Ted Nugent busted out his bow and shot a flaming arrow into Saddam's throat.  A plywood cutout, not the real Saddam.

Ozzy - 1992.  The No More Tours Tour, lol.  Alice In Chains ,  plus the opener was Sepultura, a weird Brazilian speed metal band.

Def Leppard - 1993

Moved up to Manhattan in 94 so haven't able to make it down to the Mausoleum very much since then

Seems like I'm forgetting a couple, but those were just at the Coliseum.  Cotillion was awesome, West Bank Stage, Century II.  Wichita had it going on

Was one of the best for me in Wichita, too.  Forgot to mention the White Zombie video that was some sort of random Japanese porn that had a girl shooting fire out of her vagina.  Was awesome.

My first real concert was also at the Kansas Coliseum.  Brandy opened for Boyz II Men in 1995, this was Brandy's first tour and her first album and after Boyz II Men released II.  Fantastic concert.  I also saw Nickleback (free tickets) at the KC.  Saw Mike Jones at the Cotillion, he stood by the door at the end of the show and talked to people as they were leaving, and finally DMB at Intrust, meh.

Sometimes we'd get 107.3 kkrd on my way to school.  Don't remember ever getting T95, but it was fun mocking K95 out of Dodge.  "All the hits, without hard rock or rap."  Or "hit after hit after hit, the most music, K95"

Any brotha from Philly is going to be hard, just a fact of life.  Motown did a great job of molding them into what the general public wanted young black men to be.  The Mike & Shawn feud is pretty funny/sad.

Roomed with a western kansan'er this past semester.  Let me tell you, this guy was about as hick as it gets.

True story: he showed up with boots made out of an ostrich.  Seriously.  Wearing a flightless bird on your feet passes for style out there.  Just bizarre.

Damn, white people.

My first real concert was also at the Kansas Coliseum.  Brandy opened for Boyz II Men in 1995, this was Brandy's first tour and her first album and after Boyz II Men released II.  Fantastic concert.

Was this the Budwieser Superfest Tour, which oddly enough, no bear was served at the concert?  I remember going to a Boyz II Men concert around this time. don't remember brandy being there, but do remember Silk (I think).  Bel Biv Devoe was supposed to be there and canceled....

First concert in wichita was Motley Crue Dr Feelgood Tour when I was 14. Won the tickets on the radio.

Cinderella/Bullet Boys/Winger   :Hook'em:(Lots of hairspray at this one)
Van Halen (Sammy Hagar)
Tesla
George Strait/some Canadian chick
Ted Nugent out at Lake Afton at some music fest.
Kid Rock/Jaime Johnston at IBA.
Know I saw a few others at various establishments but was to pakd to remember/realize who they were.

Pearl Jam / Urge Overkill, Century II. The bootleg recording CD was called "World Jam" and I have it!

Winger / Blackfish, West Bank Stage, first ever T-95 Oz Fest.

Collective Soul, KS Coliseum, also some cheap T-95 promotion.

Spin Doctors / Sponge, Sedgwick County Park. Terrible venue, terrible bands!

Green Day, Cotillion Ballroom

Foo Fighters / Ween, Cotillion. Ween played "The HIV Song" and we were all like, "Who are these guys? "

Bush / Goo Goo Dolls / No Doubt, KS Coliseum. Fun fact: the Goos had to play a rushed set because their lead singer had hiccups or some other ailment.

Smashing Pumpkins, KS Coliseum. The floor had seats because of the Pumpkins' stance against moshing.

Stone Temple Pilots / Cheap Trick, KS Coliseum. The night before my last day of high school!  :excited:

Third Eye Blind / Space Monkeys, Cotillion. Met Stephen Jenkins afterward - he was the worst. I'm still sad that grade-A douche like that got to bang Charlize Theron. The Space Monkeys guy was cool, though.

we were at some of the same shows. Here is my great review:

Concert #2:

Jawbreaker

I saw Incubus and Hoobastank at the Kansas Colosseum back in 2001.  It may have been 2002.  I don't know; somewhere around there.

Was at this one, i remember the crowd getting pissed because Incubus took so long to setup after Hoobastank's set was over.

Also Weezer/Pete Yorn in the 2001-2002 time.

I was there too, pretty much front row, but back and forth a lil bit because we never had crowd control in those days.   I'm glad arena shows give ya a lil breathing room now.

You're wrong about Bush though. That REM - "One I love" rendition was strong!!

Next:

EyeHateGod
Deftones
White Zombie
Pantera

at the Coliseum.

Good times.

There too.

When I was a kid I wanted to grow up and be Motley Crüe.   My sibs and I would watch MTV behind our parents back and when their vids would come on I would grab the broomstick, air guitar it up, and jump off the couch.

Now they're great workout music.  I enjoy the finer deeper tastes too,  but there is nothing wrong with the buzzing rhythms of Motley Crüe.

Armored Saint, Metallica and WASP at the Cotillion in Jan or Feb 1985.  All had great sets but Metallica tore the roof of that bitch ... only to turn into twats 5 years later.

Metal Church, Anthrax, MegaDeth and many more at the round mount of sound over the years.  Hammered and banging my head at all of them.

Oh yeah ... saw Dead Orchestra in a pasture out by that shithole Haven one night.

Omg.  This post is amazing

Lee, meanwhile, was on an elevated platform, backlit so the audience could fully appreciate the frenetic energy he still possesses. The crew did not, however, set up Lee’s drum coaster, which at some stops on the tour delivers him on a wild ride through the arena with his drum set. Though Intrust Bank Arena’s ceiling is capable of handling the rig, the crew decided not to use it on the stop, arena officials said.

Gooch, how long did they play for tonight, 2 hours?

The whole show was about 3.5 hours.

It's just amazing how far Wichita has come in the past 35-40 years... In July of '87, the Sedgwick County Commission banned them from playing at the Kansas Coliseum.  I hope none of you were adversely affected by that "devil music".

A scheduled July 10 concert by Motley Crue in Wichita's Kansas Coliseum has been canceled by the Sedgwick County Commission. After listening to two hours of debate between church agents and rock fans Wednesday night, the commission decided not to take any chances and voted to bar the band.
