killer instinct gone.....

Was our killer instinct gone in the VaTech or Gonzaga games???

It's concerning that we're playing down to our competition, but against good opponents, we've played exceedingly well.  Even against Duke, if we shoot 65%+ FT and Pullen isn't ice cold, that's a 5 point game.

I think expectations got a little too high for early season but I think eventually this team will be as good as expected.  It'll take some time and everyone should have anticipated some bumps in the road and inconsistent play early.  They'll make some serious strides this month as a team, mark it.

franks teams get better over time.  they've been this way since he started.  momentum will be built and we will begin to see the glimpses of crap get less and less and the good spots get longer and longer.  december has traditionally been frank's month.

guess what baby!?  it's DECEMBER 1ST!!  WOOOOOOHHOOOOO!!

i expect patterns and trends to remain constant.  i expect KU to win the conference outright or tie w/ UT or Baylor.

in my mind's eye a year like last year would be phenomenal.  winning the Big 12 would exceed my expectations.

Clams, to put it simply: I expected more.  I expected Wally to be better, he’s not (go compare him to Thomas Robinson – it’s really not even a comparison).  I expected Curtis (and Jamar to a certain extent) to…well…play and they hadn’t for a number of games.  I thought our defense would be better than it is – I thought it would be dominating from the start, not “similar” to the start of last year.  I thought Freddy would be more aggressive, he’s not (I mean, jfc, he pumped faked – against emporia state - on a runout and then laid the ball in).

And I expected all this because I thought we had enough talent and experience returning that there wouldn’t be these hurdles to overcome….essentially our starting point would be different.  Maybe I expected too much.

You're Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!).

really good teams (which is what I expected us to be) should have done everything you said against ranked teams at home (we can split hairs about the zag nuetrality), not get embarassed by duke, and destroy everyone else (with an occassional struggle - like we've had in nearly every game against teams we shouldn't struggle with).

it's not that we're a failure or anything or that we aren't good...I just thought (maybe hoped?) that we'd be really good.  which might be a good thing, I guess.  we're "good" without really playing up to our abilities at all, imo.

we didn't come from no expectations - we finished 2nd in the league last year, had a #2 seed in the tourney (the top #2 seed?), and made it to the elite 8 and return nearly the entire squad, sans Denis.  but feel free to set up straw man after straw man and knock them down.

I think we all can agree that Friday will weigh heavily in this debate, no?
one person that doesn't agree?  ken pomeroy, he has us losing the game.

it's Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) because we're #5, 6-1, only loss to the best team in the country(by far), and further along than we were at this point last year.  You can't go from no expectations to expecting to be the uncontested greatest team in the country in one year without being considered Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!)...

we didn't come from no expectations - we finished 2nd in the league last year, had a #2 seed in the tourney (the top #2 seed?), and made it to the elite 8 and return nearly the entire squad, sans Denis.  but feel free to set up straw man after straw man and knock them down.

i feel like we're further along right now then we were at this point last year
so either we started off further along this year and have come the same way (or farther), or we started at the same point, and have come farther.  either way :dunno:

Zacker,

You are usually one of the most pessimistic posters on this board. Why did you have high expectations this year for the first 7 games?? Are you changing?

Thinking of you,

We weren't expected to do any of that last year. This year we're expected to win the league and compete for a #1 seed in the tourney, both of which are still very conceivable.  :dunno:

it is kind of Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) that you are mad about curt and jamar not playing much and also mad about how the defense looks and that we haven't run everyone out of the gym. it's kinda like, pick one or other but picking all of them just doesn't make sense because of how much the first affects the second and third. also, thinking that a frank martin coached team was going to look good against crappy teams in novmember means that you haven't watched a lot of basketball over the past four years or you recently had a stroke and lost all of your memories of frank martin coached cats basketball.  :dunno:

I never give up on Cat hoops. Heck, after 12-4/3-2 in Wooly's last year I still believed, and that was AFTER the Nebraska embarrassment in the OOD.

This team is easy to believe in, very easy.

The Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) part is that your expectations have not been met thus far.  Unless your expectations were to go through the noncon undefeated and beat Duke (which is basically unreasonable) you should be satisfied.

See VaTech and Gonzaga.  Like Pete said, Friday will go a long way in resolving this perspective clash.  Based on how we've played thus far, I see no reason not to expect a W.

they're related.  how hard is it to get your cac straight off the court when you're a preseason top 5 team picked to win the league?  it's a focus issue.   and because they couldn't/can't, it hinders the process.  i mean, no cac, not having curt  hurts....but that's part of expecting a team with experienced players to act like it. i mean, next thing you know jamar's in an elevator with a girl......

all frank martin coached teams (regardless of their talent level and experience) shouldn't look like the same cac in november.  i think that's absurd coaching.

i was hoping this team would be special but it's not.  maybe if frank sits me or something i'll buy in.

you didn't consider last year's team as special did you?

it was special because it was unexpected.  my expectation this year was to win the big 12.  i don't see us doing that.
franks teams get better over time.  they've been this way since he started.  momentum will be built and we will begin to see the glimpses of crap get less and less and the good spots get longer and longer.  december has traditionally been frank's month.

guess what baby!?  it's DECEMBER 1ST!!  WOOOOOOHHOOOOO!!

i don't think that every year, regardless of your talent level or experience, patterns should remain.  the starting point has to be different.
i don't think you make sense.

We do have several experienced players, but we are also working in several new guys as well.  In fact, we are one of the most inexperienced teams in the league overall. That is part of our growing pains, and is only magnified by Kelly and Samuels missing games.

I've got to get with 'Zacker on this one... there's a slightly empty feeling in the pit of my stomach due the Catz play so far this season. I can't say for sure what's causing it. I think it has something to do with the identity of last years team vs. this years team. I think it's the lack of junkyardiness. Between Dom, Denis, and LuCo, we lost a ton of JYCs... probably the three junkyardiest on the team. This years team has a completely different identity and maybe not much identity to speak of at all. At least not yet.

LBBIQ Denis Analysis:

Love him.  Seems to force teams to scramble back on defense even off made baskets possibly keeping them off the offensive glass :dunno:  Great at creating his own shot though it hasn't been falling as much as it used to.  Has the ability to go off for 20+ which Martavious will never have.  Plays bad defense sometimes.  Seems to do well at breaking press.  Like when they try to trap him at halfcourt and he just leans into the defender forcing a call by the official and forcing them to stop trying to trap at half court.  Like his runner which he can get whenever he wants (goes back to creating his own shot I guess).  Isn't afraid to shoot when open early in possession which is what we want to do according to Frank (raises the number of possessions? :dunno: ).  A:TO ratio is respectible in relation to the amount of sh1t he gets about it.  Don't know why this is.  Possibly our fans hate flashy turnovers and would rather have a bounce pass out of bounds 25 seconds into the shot clock :dunno:  Probably some other stuff that I can't put into words because I have LBBIQ.

it's his defense more than his shot selection that is hurting us.  but if you're on the "I hate denis bandwagon" but don't in the same sentence say who should play, then stfu because it's pointless (also you're gay).

Disagree.  I think you can hate someone but still want him to play over people that you hate more.

Meh, we can't on one hand acknowledge on one hand that Frank creates adversity and tinkers with the roster and rotations in the early season and then on the other hand really cares much when we lose games like this.  If Frank had a consistent 8-9 man rotation with players understanding their roles I would care more.  We know Frank makes sacrifices to build towards February and March so I expect adversity in November and December.

Even while Frank is still Frankin' around with his teams in Nov/Dec, I still expect us to beat Colorado/Tech level teams, even on the road.  Wash St will be lucky to be an NIT team this year, this is simply a team we should beat.

If we lose in Pullman feel free to be ticked, I might even meltdown a little.

+1

Meh, we can't on one hand acknowledge on one hand that Frank creates adversity and tinkers with the roster and rotations in the early season and then on the other hand really cares much when we lose games like this.  If Frank had a consistent 8-9 man rotation with players understanding their roles I would care more.  We know Frank makes sacrifices to build towards February and March so I expect adversity in November and December.

I agree except that I think Wazzu is a way overrated team and if we lose to them it makes me wonder about our games against our conference rivals. I understand we usually are a much stronger team later in the year though.

i really, really, really want this year to result in something. big 12 champ reg season or conf tourn or final four would be amazing. unless a game relates to one of those three things things, i don't care. would rather win then lose i guess but whatever.

I don't even care if the team does something "big".  All I ask from KSU basketball is to be solidly in the tourney every year.  We're definitely going to be in, so I'm all :gocho: all year.

So what?

i think wsu is better than tech/cu level.  more of an osu level.  tough road game.

Could be.  I don't think they are a tournament team though.

i don't think osu is either.  between the two, i'd bet wsu.

The only issue with this is that Wazzu will have very very few opportunities for quality wins but OSU will have about a dozen chances in conference play alone.

You dipchits get too anxious about everythig K-State , smoke some weed , or take a prozac, cause the basketball coach will massage the youngsters into a totally different bunch of JYC by March.
