But Apple's reach goes further than controlling technology: No apps that "encourage excessive consumption." Apps can't misspell Apple product names—like iTunz. Apps can't look like Apple's applications either. Apps "with metadata that mentions the name of any other computer platform" are out. Apps can't be defamatory or "mean-spirited." (Unless you're a professional satirist.) No apps that replicate pre-installed applications—like Mail. Apps can't portray "realistic images of people or animals being killed or maimed" or shot. Goodbye Call of Duty. No "Chat Roulette" apps.

I have a new ipod touch and, I'm not gonna lie, I like the crap out of it. It's just about the perfect airplane companion.

I have nothing against the ipod touch. I very much have something against what is in the link.

don't see the big deal. :dunno:

Why can't Apple decide what software they allow to operate within their environment?
-
Meh, just ignore the companies philosophy and enjoy all the kick ass products they offer. Have you seen the new razor thin laptop they have coming out

You don't know a lot about business.

I know that I have the right to decide what I want to do with the objects I purchase. This is a consumerist issue. Not a business issue. It may make them more money? Why should you care? How much stock do you own in them? People here are more likely to be a consumer, thus being affected as such.
Why can't Apple decide what software they allow to operate within their environment?
It affects competition. Greatly affects consumer selection. It forces developers to lose profit. There are a ton of reasons why I don't want them to decide what software they allow. Nobody but the FCC can make Apple not "decide what software they allow to operate within their environment" except for the consumers. The only people that should be for this is Apple. Anyone who buys their products or develops for their products should be seriously angry.

hey dingleberry,
if you don't want to be forced to buy something, then don't buy it. :dunno:
-
This is like me walking into Mcdonalds and demanding they give me a slice of pizza because pizza makers everywhere are suffering.
-
Just spit balling here but didn't Microsoft get sued for Anti-trust along the lines that they packaged their software into the operating system they sold to control the market for word processors, spread sheets etc?

I see what you are trying to get at. The case against microsoft was basically that they created their software to be incompatible with other operating systems, as you said effectively creating an impossible-to-match competitive advantage.
What ew is saying might be closer to the complaints levied against Wal-Mart. That because of there preeminent place in the marketplace they can dictate to manufacturers certain price points, product characteristics, etc, that wouldn't arise normally in the market. Creating an unfair (but not impossible to match) competitive advantage for outsiders.
Apple, is dictating only content as far as I know. His complaint is more similar to Wal-Mart or another retailer deciding not to sell CD's with explicit lyrics. Artists and recording studios representing them of course complain that they are being unfairly closed out of the market. Of course, if they chose to make a CD without explicit lyrics (which most have) they will get the sales they are missing out on. Just like the developers could in this scenario.

Does Walmart compete in the recording industry? If they did (honestly don't know if they own any stake in anything similar), then it would be close.
hey dingleberry,
if you don't want to be forced to buy something, then don't buy it. :dunno:
Who is forcing who to buy anything? A company is doing something I don't agree with and I'm deciding as a consumer I don't want to support it. Not that complicated.

Life without Chat Roulette?!!?1/

This is nothing more than an architect or engineering specifying something very tight and then not allowing any wiggle room or equal substitutes. They're only limiting apps sold through their app store.

I would say that creating an app not named "Dirty Fingers" is more than enough wiggle room.
-

very important to note. we're talking about crap you load on your iphone/ipad/ipod, not an imac.

It's a lot more. Apple is a software developer that is being able to choose what software is sold on it's machine. Not only that, they're chopping off 25% profit from the developer. This is a mafia union boss. Not any old architect specifying what ever p-lam.
Not a hard concept to understand. Closed systems are never good for the consumer. Thank God it's only on 10% of the world's PC's. If Microsoft had done this, retards in turtle necks everywhere would be crying about it. Not to mention the EU.

No, Apple is rolling out with an "app store" for OS X Lion. Read the article. Go back and watch the keynote from a week or 2 ago.

Microsoft lets its employees run Windows, Linux, or OSX on their machines.
(Lets face it, neither of those OS's are an actual threat to significant market share)

so in this scenario, what color turtle neck are you wearing?

I think I'd be with the EU on this one. The turtleneckers' motivation would be completely different. I'm actually for consumer's rights.
I'm sorry, but if I buy something, no way in hell I want other people to still control it. The library of congress agrees, which is why it made cell phone jail breaking legal.
-
It must really suck to care about stuff like this.

yeah. i can't even imagine. just think about the people that care about whether some guys likes to make out with another guy though. there's probably some people that care about both. i mean, how much free time do you fuckers have?

I am sure you make a decent starting salary in w/e dumb business field you guys majored in 33/daris. Don't hate on the computer elites making big bucks.

Never thought they were. They have a lot of work to do, but they're going the complete opposite direction that Apple is going when it comes to this. You're starting to argue like Beems, btw. You're better than this.

have you guys seen the RC hellicopter with a point of view camera that you control with your iphone? just imagine all the shenanigans a guy could get into with that thing in a girls locker room. :eye:

Yet another BMW posts. Make a few posts that argue against the grain, then throw the table over and walk out of the room when exposed as a dipshit.
We've been over news that just came out dozens of times? If you don't want to read the thread, don't rough ridin' open it. Talk about a revolutionary idea.

Maybe the emotional stress that Apple products put you through just clouds your memory. LOL @ you ---->
I HATE APPLE!! :curse: :runaway: :curse:

Love the ways Apple haterz hate. Bunch of people who don't have the sand to admit they've foolishly been using a far inferior product just because they don't want to/can't pony up the extra dough to shop for quality products. Also denial is a really ugly thing.
If you're an elite computery person you probably don't apply, but for folks who just want crap that works without being required to be a computer technician, Apple rules the world. I get emails from 75 year old people that can't use a PC but can bang out emails on an iPad all day. What!? Yes, I want one too.

The fact that you can't recognize how hypocritical it is to talk about consumer rights while booting into Windows pretty much ends this thread for me. Thanks for playin!

Weird how it's always the Apple haters starting the threads about how much they hate Apple and never the other way around.
PC people are like the high school wrestling team. They are always calling out the basktball players (Apple people) and making fun of basketball because they are so insecure about their sport. Meanwhile the basketball players don't even know the wrestlers names.

Meanwhile, I don't know of anyone that would want to run Mac OS on PC hardware. What would be the point?

Great topic guys!
I have very much interest in Apple (http://www.apple.com/) and their fantastic line of products!
Apple has learned a lot from iPad (http://www.apple.com/ipad/). The new MacBook Air (http://www.apple.com/macbookair/)is proof. It’s designed around all-flash storage for better responsiveness and reliability. It features a trackpad with full Multi-Touch (http://www.apple.com/macbookair/features.html#multi-touch) support. And though it’s incredibly thin and light, its large battery (http://www.apple.com/macbookair/features.html#battery) gives you portable power that lasts for hours.
So whether am I cruising Facebook in the secret coffee that only my friends and I know about, or downloading the newest obscure hit from iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/), I know that the sleek elegant design of my MacBook Air will be there for me.
Was is also nice is knowing that when it comes to being environmentally friendly, Apple (http://www.apple.com/environment/) approaches things differently — through their products. That’s why MacBook Air is energy efficient and free of many harmful toxins.
All of this, and more can be found in the next generation of MacBooks.
When I keep track of my favorite team the KSU WILDCATS, I always use my MACBOOK AIR (http://www.apple.com/macbookair/) and other great APPLE products!
Go TEAM KSU and WILDCATS! GO GO GO!

Hackintosh is a hobbyist/geek thing, like installing Linux on your toaster. Boot Camp is out of necessity.

I'm sorry, but if I buy something, no way in hell I want other people to still control it. The library of congress agrees, which is why it made cell phone jail breaking legal.
Yup, good old Microsoft Windows- a shining example of a true open platform
Never thought they were. They have a lot of work to do, but they're going the complete opposite direction that Apple is going when it comes to this. You're starting to argue like Beems, btw. You're better than this.
I'm arguing like BMW and you're the one posting links to stupid crap like this one, rehashing crap we've been over dozens of times. Got it. Thanks for the link, revolutionary crap I learned from reading it.
Yet another BMW posts. Make a few posts that argue against the grain, then throw the table over and walk out of the room when exposed as a dipshit.
We've been over news that just came out dozens of times? If you don't want to read the thread, don't rough ridin' open it. Talk about a revolutionary idea.
Yeah, we have been over this.
Maybe the emotional stress that Apple products put you through just clouds your memory. LOL @ you ---->
I HATE APPLE!! :curse: :runaway: :curse:
I don't hate anything. I just think it's hilarious how you would rather get raped over on price and consumer rights, just for a brand. I just hope that attitude stays with you and not the rest of the world. I like to use the things I buy the way I want to.
The fact that you can't recognize how hypocritical it is to talk about consumer rights while booting into Windows pretty much ends this thread for me. Thanks for playin!
What is MS doing that compares at all to what Apple is doing?

Question for turtleneck wearing complainer, ew2x4-
Between Microsoft and Apple, only one company has been sued by the Dept of Justice for violating anti-trust laws. The company lost the lawsuit and was found guilty of violating the Sherman Antitrust act.
Only one of the two companies was also sued by the EU for violating anti-trust laws and again was found guilty of violating consumer rights.
Care to guess which of these two fine outstanding pro-consumer rights software companies it was?
-
In 2004 that happened mainly because IE was bundled with Windows and it was unable to be removed. In present day computer land, Windows 7 allows you to remove IE all together. The European version even comes shipped with a ballot option to install the browser of your choice.
Also in 2010, Apple has installing Safari set to default when you run Apple Software Update with only itunes or quicktime installed. On Mac systems, there is no way to successfully uninstall the packaged software. Not to mention they are one step away from having a completely closed desktop OS.
Two companies going in completely opposite directions. But yeah, what ever you say, buddy.

Question for iDorks, is there any way around using iTunes?

Hey guys! Bundling software in 2004 is exactly the same as creating a closed OS in 2010! :flush:

I'm not really a fan of Apple's products, but I do own Apple stock, so I love crap like this.

Surprisingly easy...kind of like getting used to typing on a new phone keyboard, but way bigger and easier. Some idiots may freak out about not being able to "feel" when you hit the keys.
My dad is still pretty slow with it but I can type like a 13 year old girl using AIM (or facebook chat these days )

Other Technology companies do the same thing . . . several of whom are monsters in their particular sectors, they're just not househould names on the level of Apple.
I think it's BS . . . BUT . . . it's their $hit and they can do whatever they want . . . all the :chainsaw: is driven by petty jealousy because these companies have been smarter and more business savvy then their competitors.

The thing about those other companies is that they usually offer a product that is far superior to their competitors, so the consumer has no real choice. Apple is unique because while they do offer quality products, they are not always clearly superior to the competition at the same price point. Apple fans will continue to buy their products no matter how expensive, restrictive, or in some cases inferior they are.

Nobody but the FCC can make Apple not "decide what software they allow to operate within their environment" except for the consumers.
Sooooo Apple shouldn't be able to decide what can go on an Apple device, but the federal gov't should?

You read this whole thread and choose to misinterpret that line? I'd hope that the government would break up monopolistic practices like they have in the past. Why would you want Apple or the government to choose what is allowed on their OS?
-
You read this whole thread
Nope.
