I didn't focus on the offense in _FANalysis this week, but after going back and rewatching much of the NU game, I really think the offense will have a big game tonight. The loss of Smith is a concern, but the encouraging thing is that unlike the past two games, we should have an advantage up front (probably on both sides of the ball) and IMO that means Thomas will have a big night, but also Quarles/Thompson and perhaps one of the TEs.
In rewatching the NU game, we really had some nice wrinkles in the first part of the game, but NU's defense was just too good for us to get much done, especially Lavonte David. David made a number of incredible plays and KU has no one on the field with the abilty of David. But I'm not sure any defensive player we face this year will have the abilities that David possesses. Plus, NU has one of the best secondaries in the country and although probably not dominant, they have a very solid defensive line. All of this allowed NU to play us pretty much straight up, using at most 6 or 7 in the box mixed with some secondary blitzes. We had plenty of play calls to take advantage of this from NU, but we simply couldn't handle David on many of those and NU's secondary made it tough to throw.
That said, the spread looks we gave, utilizing Thomas in the passing game, and the short passing game allowed us to move the ball decently early in the game, even though we failed to finish drives. I firmly belive that a lot of the play calls that led to short gains vs Nebraska, will lead to big plays against Kansas. I expect our power running game to create large holes and KU will struggle with Thomas cutbacks off of our inside zone running game. Play action should also lead to some wide open looks as well. And looking at the Baylor game, KU really struggled in coverages, not just match-up wise, but they had multiple major coverage breakdowns that were scheme problems as well. I fully expect us to take advantage of those. We will add wrinkles, but we shouldn't have to do anything way out of the ordinary to move the ball effectively against this defense, which is probably the worst defense in the Big 12. (Yes, even worse than ours)
To me it will really come down to not making mistakes offensively, namely Thomas putting the ball on the ground or poor reads/ passes by Coffman or whoever plays QB tonight. If we don't score in the high 20s/low 30s I will be very surprised.

but i wanted to beat nu, not ku.

uk's defense is terrible, I think we'll push them around in the running game. Still worried about hitting the invisible wall at the 30 though

NU is really, really good.

Rumblings that the playbook will finally be opened. Old Balls was holding back even during the Nebraska game, that crafty devil.

What if it's Lamur?!
How fun!
-
Offensive football can be made so simple for QBs...
It's bewildering, the way we treat Carson Coffman.

So, how long until our fan base realizes that this year's play book is a single 4x6 index card, front and back?

Its not.

Sounds like it won't even be fair tonight. A lot of people in the press box are expecting the techmo bowl offense.

Italics, people....italics. I was just taking a shot at that whole Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) talking point. We will be able to move the ball tonight.

Props to _Fan for rewatching the NU game. Very brave (or sadistic) man.

We had one (1) 3 and out vs Nebraska, probably the best defense we'll see all year. Just sayin'.

I know. I know.
I just want to see one trick play aside from an abortion of a fake field goal. I know it's low FBIQ, but goddammit, I want to see one. JUST ONE! :bawl:

Very interesting stat. Would not have guessed that.

Like how open our receivers are matters at all to this team.

We had some really nice starts to drives and some nice play calling. We would just get to a point where we'd have a bad snap and we couldn't overcome it. I simply don't think KU will do that to us consistently. A few drives, yes, but we should be able to move and score. I think this game could play out similar to the ISU game, and as long as we avoid a play like the pick 6 Coffman threw, we should win comfortably. I just am having a hard time not being confident that we'll win this game.
-
I wish I shared in this optimism. Our offense is complete dog crap. I would be happy with 20 points and hope KU shits the bed again.

It is frustrating how small our margin of error is on sustaining drives. It seems like our ability to convert on third downs of over 5 yards is minimal. I would like to see us throw it on first down more but I think its hard to when our offense needs almost all three downs to get ten yards. I think we will move the ball ok tonight but I have little faith that we can hold them to less than four scores.

Its amazing how one horrible game colors the perceptions, but I can understand why.
If you mean 4 total scores; perhaps, but if you mean 4 TDs, I don't see it. We held much better offenses to less. UCLA had 2 TDs and 3 FGs. ISU had 1 TDs and 2 FGs. CFU had 1 TD and 2 FGs. Barring something stupid by us (multiple TOs for short fields, horrible special teams), there is little reason to believe KU will achieve more than any of those offenses against us.

The game is on the road. And this bunch aint road warriors and haven't been for many years now.
As much as I want to buy the hype about a comfortable win, I'll believe it when I see it. Even with the POWL in full effect, we need to overcome playing like crap on the road.

This is really the only thing that worries me, besides not having Smith. Very legitimate concern, but I think we'll overcome it.
Now in Waco on the other hand...

Yeah, not having our most legit wide receiver to go up and snare carsy's ducks also scares the ever living crap out of me as well.
I want to believe. I just can't convince myself of it yet.

IMHO, its hard to make a whole lot from the recent road record, though I won't completely disregard it. We played 4 of our first 6 games away from Manhattan last year, and we were clearly not in position to compete on the road at that point. It wasn't until getting some confidence with the aTm and CU wins at home that we really started playing, and if we compete like we did in our final 2 road games @OU and @NU we will be fine tonight. In many ways it will be all about how we recover from the debacle from last Thursday. I'm really not factoring the way we struggled on the road under Prince, that's ancient history to me.

We are a much better team.

Point goes to _FAN on this one.

I will say, I did not anticipate Coffman playing THIS well. Still, the goEMAW pessimism did surprise me today.

Thanks for keeping us grounded _fan you fought the good fight this week
