So cas is heading off to K-State here in a month, and is still without a laptop.
Recommendations???
Money is no object. BSVC is helping me out on this one.
-
Prolly get a macbook pro if money is no option. I also played with one of these the other day and it was pretty cool.

I would suggest mac if money is not an object. it "boosts" you up quite a bit. (and they seem to function pretty well or whatever)
-
was shopping for a new tv and saw that sony is doing a big back to school sale on theirs and engadget says good things about them.
also second the mac book recommendo fwiw.
also money is never an object for a student, just get a ESL or something, u digg?
also here's the sony link, u digg?

Only get a Mac if you want be ridiculed by the CIS/CMPEN crowd (will destroy your life)
If you really want to turn heads, get one of these: http://www.panasonic.com/business/toughbook/fully-rugged-laptop-toughbook-31.asp (http://www.panasonic.com/business/toughbook/fully-rugged-laptop-toughbook-31.asp)
We have them at work and I have brought one to class a few times, everyone is  when they see it, and battery lasts really really really really long.
If bulletproof computers aren't your style, I would say grab any laptop with an Intel ULV cpu.
-
It's kinda between Mac and HP. Nothing against Sony...
Looked here for some comparisons and this kinda stood out.

Get cash from BSVC telling them the laptop is XXXX amount but only spend XXX amount. Spend rest of the money to live the life in Manhappenin.
-
Like I said, get an Intel ultra low voltage cpu. Then, buy a quality SSD to put in it (X25-M, Vertex 2, Agility 2 all have very good flash controllers and are very affordable)
This is the best pair of battery life and performance. Not to mention, Windows 7 is the only OS with TRIM support.

Ok. So I have like no idea what you are saying.
Should have put a disclaimer that I really don't know jack about computers.

Not true. I already completely support cas and his shitty computer.
-
Buy whatever you feel most comfortable surfing internet porn with.

I'm not very good at computers but I'm pretty sure that's a POS especially considering you don't have to worry about cost. Just my :twocents:
-
How good does your computer need to be to break into the schools system and change your grades?
I'd get one at least that good

Say that after I smash skulls with it and clean the blood off, followed by some bbsing

Were you born with no fists?

I would def. recommend a laptop with a long battery life and an hdmi port. along with the other usual things: large hard drive, ram, etc.

Agree. Just make sure it's an HDMI out port. HDMI in on a laptop is pretty much worthless.
-
Just get the best Sony one in whatever size you want. :combofan:
-
Go for battery life. All you are going to use it for is bbs'ing, writing papers and looking for pron.
-
hemzy, plz don't tell me you walk around w/that thing. say it ain't so. :frown:

Nah I got a shitty lappy. Spend all my money on my desktop.

leaning macbook.
why?
because they look so rough ridin' cool.
-
Yeah, if money is no option, i'd say mac. Just don't become one of those mac douches though. thx.
-
Macs are cool. Expensive, but cool.
This is the more sensible option though, imo. Looks great and 5 hours of battery life.

^This. They are probably all  about how someone who brings a speak and spell to their college classes got into the same class as them.

Will you be traveling with it much? How big and durable do you want it to be?
-
Will you be traveling with it much? How big and durable do you want it to be?
Well, I'll be taking it to classes if needed and stuff of that nature. But other than that I'm just going to have it to do homework on.
-
Here is the thing, nobody in this thread knows anything about computers, so when they say get a Mac you should do the exact opposite of that.

What will your homework be? Word docs and porn? Something more demanding?

Open option right now. Most of my classes are history though for the first semester. Doing pre-law too.

Do you have any interest in watching blu ray movies?
-
would be nice, but def. not a deal breaker.

Hmm, might have to make you a mod. We have your first research project BTW. It involves buses.
-

Then honestly, it doesn't matter what laptop you get. I would try them all out and get one that has the screen and keyboard you like the most. If you're worried at all about durability with moving it around (I would be), I'd get a Lenovo or something of similar quality. Macs don't have blu ray. The only real benefit with them is the resale value.
If I were to get a new laptop today, I'd get this: http://www.dell.com/us/en/business/notebooks/precision-m6500/pd.aspx?refid=precision-m6500&cs=04&s=bsd
Can't beat the power, the screen resolution, etc.

If you want to love it every time you use it, get a 13" Macbook Pro. Perfect size, sexy hardware. The one I have is my first Mac and I love it.

pre-law is pre-stupid. if you really want to go to law school there are better ways to do it then by studying pre-law.

Good point. I've always been a little confused about the "pre-law" route at ksu. I've heard that there's a separate curriculum with a "focus" on law oriented classes, but I've also heard that K-state doesn't have such a thing as a "pre-law" major.
I've considered telling people I'm pre-law just so I don't have to answer the inevitable "are you going to be a teacher or a museum curator" that comes along with telling people I'm a history major

When I was there, pre-law seemed like little more than a resume-filler club anybody could sign up for. I'm pretty sure there were no requirements before or after signing up.

Gotcha. I receive some of those emails sometimes because I think I may have signed up for it during my freshman year.
Looks like Dlew is pre-law.

i believe there was a gpa requirement to stay in as of a 08, when i graduated, but i cant remember for sure. they're also supposed to help keep you on track for things like: lsat prep, lsat sign up, application process, etc. basically, if you're a procrastinator who has problems making deadlines and properly preparing for exams, then you would probably find it to be beneficial. plus, it's not like it looks bad on your academic resume.

HPs break a lot.
We support hundreds of HP laptops. They seem about normal in the break/fix department.

We support them as well. HP's are very easy to fix compared to other brands imo. Only Toshibas were easy in my experience.
Of course, this means nothing to cas, since he knows crap about computers and will just hand it over to Geek Squad if anything happens.

Just a side question, I have a Dell Studio 17" screen. I like it but would like to hear anyone elses opinion on this computer. I'm sure I don't use it to it's full usefullness. Mostly play solitare and mindsweeper on it. Sometimes I watch a movie on it.

agreed, but i think that is actually one of the program's main points of emphasis. a lot of students enter college intent on going to law school.

exactly. that's how it was explained to me. there's no curriculum for pre-law or anything like that, but it is basically just declaring intent to become a BSAC.

what is one of the program's main points of emphasis? helping them understand that they're not cut out for law school?
