I made fun of how boring Phoenix is to booking s flight in 5 minutes after I remembered it's probably going to be cold here and I could book a cheap resort.
-
Unfortunately, this is the type of team that will beat us if we sleepwalk into the game.
We're better on both sides of the ball (with the exception of our propensity to turn the ball over), but Schiano is a hard ass who will have his team ready to play.
Maybe we'll get revenge for them beating Prince's ass in the 2006 Texas Bowl.
Unrelated - that stadium is awful for watching a football game
-
We brought star power to the Pop Tart Bowl last year. Maybe we can juice up the Rate Bowl.
-
Back in my day it used to be the Gustanteed Rate Bowl but I guess that's Bidenomics for ya!
-
i’d RATE this bowl match up as a giant stinker!

I was at that 2006 Texas Bowl.

Go ahead and cancel me if you want, but the Rate Bowl is the best possible outcome for the end of this season. Actually even better than making the playoff believe it or not.

Don't forget we played them in the very first Texas Bowl, with a Prince-led '05 team, and lost to those a-holes. Of course, the grass field was wet from all the rain they had during the week up to the game and they didn't bother to close the roof and our guys were slipping on their asses. Our equipment manager didn't bring shoe spikes for wet grass, so the great blameless Prince fired his ass.

That was a great exchange.
Personally, I’ll never have a problem with a bowl game in phoenix (one of my very favorite cities).

Yikes.
Pretty jealous of our Farmageddon bros. They took our spot in the coveted Pop Tarts bowl where they will face off against our perpetual punching bag -- the Miami Hurricanes.
-
(New Year New Name at this) Rate Bowl
-
Have not Googled any pics of Greg Schiano. He made a career of winning his Super Bowl against the Cats (inaugural Texas Bowl), which overshadowed his abuse toward players and being ragey and sweaty in general. Anyone watched any of their games? Was hoping to get matched up with a stronger program, like the Golden Gophers, but not winning the conference has consequences.
-
I really don’t know a lot about rutgers but I believe that their students are very technically savvy.
-
Sounds like a 4:30 kick (CST) today.
How are other Cat fans feeling about our chances in the Rate Bowl?

Guarantee there is a missing word at least

Honestly I don’t see this team getting up for anything less than the chance to eat a live pop tart (and yes that’s as much on the coaches as it is the players) so yeah, not loving our chances

Buffalo Wild Wings bowl was the best of the names imo.
True story, I went to watch that game at a Buffalo Wild Wings and they would not put the game on because it was Saturday night and they insisted on it being MMA night, despite my attempts to explain that there was only one night a year when their employer sponsored at bowl game and many more MMA Saturday nights.

If nothing else, it's good to see that both units appear interested in playing (can't say the same foe the last month of the season).
And, with the way Rutgers is ignoring AJ, the opportunity to destroy them with zone reads exists (if we're willing to take them up on the offer).
-
I miss DJamer already :frown:
-
I am a selfish man, but I want to beat this shitty Rutgers team so I can feel happy about next year
-
We should go for it on fourth
Such a CHONGS post
Assuming we had been in 4th and short, it would have been the right call!
-
Jesus Christ
-
Haha. As soon as a QB steps back and launches it calmly downfield I know it’s a completion against our pedestrian defense.
-
Rutgers will never win following td's with fg's
-
This is a matchup of equals
-
Their QB sucks throwing the ball and he's going to miss more of those throws than he's going to hit.
Safeties just need to be more disciplined - especially with Rich and James filling in for Parrish.
-
That series kinda sucked
-
Defensive series kinda sucked too
-
And, just like that, Payne overpursues (again) and they rip off a huge gain.
Then, we try some token tackling on the goal line and get run over.
-
Hyping up alternate unis and then playing like garbage is so on brand for us.
-
I hope we score a touchdown this drive!
-
I hope they let Avery sling it today too
-
I hope we score a touchdown this drive!
Heck yes
-
I hope we score a touchdown this drive!
Heck yes
I'm glad you and I can enjoy cheering on the Cats together my friend
-
The defense just needs to tighten up. They can't keep up with us unless the offense turns the ball over.
-
First to 50 wins
-
I know no one wants to bring it up but this entire bowl atmosphere is such a huge step down from the pop tarts
-
Haha. As soon as a QB steps back and launches it calmly downfield I know it’s a completion against our pedestrian defense.
It's all about perspective, if our DB is within 5 yards when the camera catches up to the receiver, I take it as a sign of improvement.
-
So bad, so very very bad
-
Well hey at least our D showed up! for exactly one (1) possession
-

Everyone unloads on Riley. Why does Klanderman get a pass?
-
Oof
-
fuq.
-
Everyone unloads on Riley. Why does Klanderman get a pass?
I don't think he does? But the first thing people blame if you aren't undefeated is offensive play calling because people are pretty dumb. Klandy also had a decent track record before this year that gives him a bit of grace.
-
Rutgers just needs a FG here to keep us out of reach the rest of the game.
-
JFC Avery
-
Everyone unloads on Riley. Why does Klanderman get a pass?
It's been mostly Fabris and Fair today (not sure if Riley's even played).
That said, I would agree that given that Klandy and Klieman are DB coaches by trade, the play of the safety unit is one of the most disappointing aspects of this season.
-
Yep, we blinked first. But they are going to get a TD.
-

We call timeout because we are third down headhunters.
-
This should be interesting
-
I'll be damned. Now if AJ doesn't give a late pick-six.

Ha - that he was talking about Jordan Riley!
-
I'll be damned. Now if AJ doesn't give a late pick-six.
Hopefully that was AJ's last wtf moment of the game
-
Friendly reminder: cats get the ball to start the 2nd half
Other friendly reminder: we rarely if ever take advantage of it when we do
-
If we want to justifiably bitch about something - Klieman and his staff are absolutely awful at clock management.
That last series was just bizarre - either go for it or don't, but snapping the ball on that last play was absolutely idiotic.
-
Can’t wait to hear in the post game presser how winning 8 games is really really hard and competing with Rutgers is really really had.
-
I'll be damned. Now if AJ doesn't give a late pick-six.
Hopefully that was AJ's last wtf moment of the game

-
A completely average Rutgers offense missing its best player is averaging 8.6 yards per play in the first half and they scored on 5 straight possessions after the opening 3 and out.
Nowhere to go but up... (I think)
-
Friendly reminder: cats get the ball to start the 2nd half
Other friendly reminder: we rarely if ever take advantage of it when we do
I don’t know why I ever get my hopes up
-
And now I watch just to see how bad this gets.
-
Rutgers is playing one deep safety because they don't respect AJ throwing the ball. He's going to need to hit some deep throws to open things up.
-
who would have thought the Cats would be get blown out by Rutgers
-
Probs ok to shut this off
-
Another safety eff up - good lord
-
We suck
-
Friendly reminder: cats get the ball to start the 2nd half
Other friendly reminder: we rarely if ever take advantage of it when we do
I don’t know why I ever get my hopes up
Woof. On the cusp of getting totally blown out here.
-
We are bad everywhere. I get out coaching staff spent 70% of time working the portal and not this game, but you assume Rutgers staff did same and it goes to show you we have a serious talent problem. Hopefully we bring in some studs because we are outmatched across the board. No player leadership is killing this team as well.
-
Lol this is a Rutgers team that couldn't score a lick this season. This is a bad team beating a worse one sadly enough.
-
I blame the alt uni's
-
I blame the alt uni's
This plus the cleats.... Doomed from the start.
-
Oh look another Kleiman team unprepared to play a meaningful football game. :flush:
-
Negative yards from the offense in 3q
-
Fitting end to a disappointing season with no meaningful accomplishment.
-
CK needs to make some adjustments to our pretend OC. He needs to go or move back to the OL coach. Also, sit AJ down for a series like what happened to Will Howard when he played badly. This might help him appreciate playing this game.
-
not sure what is worse, the game or the sap commercials
-
Remember the good ol' days when we were slaying pop tarts.
-
What if I told you Avery is nearing bust territory
-
We thought we were too good for Will Howard.
-
What if I told you Avery is nearing bust territory
Its Matt Wells fault
-
Had Dylan streaking down the sideline twice with his man beat. Overthrew him twice.
-
What if I told you Avery is nearing bust territory
You'd be a colossal dipshit if you believed that a sophomore QB with 3,000+ yards of offense and 30+ TDs is a bust. Maybe take a look at Roberson's sophomore numbers or any other sophomore QB in school history.
Does Johnson have issues - absolutely. But he's far from a bust.
-
Not over yet…
-
The ? is CK strong enough to send Ryely down the road and get someone with experence?
-
What on earth was that 2 point conversion lol
-
The ? is CK strong enough to send Ryely down the road and get someone with experence?
He gave The Mess 3 years and the offense was far worse. Riley's not going anywhere.

Worst special teams unit we've had since the early 90s.

Honestly if we had historically "normal" special teams (for us) I bet we're 10-2 instead of 8-4
-
I think so too, special times has absolutely capsized momentum in a couple games . . . including that punt return in this one
-
McClandapunter has actually done much better than normal today. Dry mountain air, probably.
-
Game on the line. Third down. Blitz has been wicked. Play it safe, first down at the 1. eff you Klanderman.

There was a blatantly awful hold on our right end on that play where their LT had a fistful of our guy's jersey for most of the play.

Tom, I have no idea. One of the more baffling decisions I've ever seen
It’s some dumb crap teams are doing now when down 14 (or 17, 14 + fg) with the premise that 2-point conversions are 50/50 so go for it on td #1 and if you make it the other td gets the win instead of tie, and if you miss it you’ll get the next one b/c 50/50 and you’re even.
It’s dumb.
-

This has been the most interesting thing of the game.

nine wins, the toughest conference schedule of any big twelve team, and we really weren’t very good.
I’ll take this into the offseason and come back mid july with conference title aspirations
Another 9-4 season. I'm not complaining and I'm happy to be a KSU fan. LETS win this in 25!
-
I am looking forward to next year!
If Avery keeps progressing and we win that game in Ireland I am going to be thinking playoffs or bust
-
It may be the last season we have him.

Gonna crack open a cold zero sugar free ginger ale and soak this up!

Dylan … 18 for 196.
Fun fact:
NUbb scored a solid 14 points vs Rutgers. At home.

Another fun fact:
Dylan Edwards scored 3 TD's in this bowl victory. His dad scored a touchdown in Kstate's very first bowl victory...which was in this very same bowl, just by another name.

Let's be honest. This game illustrates how much a neglected weapon Edwards was this year. If Giddens had played today how many opportunities would Dylan have had and how often would the Cats have challenged the edge? We need a OC as electric as our talent.

It’s dumb.

I've certainly had some complaints and this year has been far from perfect. But, year No. 1 in your life of being an offensive play caller and this is what happens. Just underscores that we're all a bit silly with our expectations (see: Johnson, Avery).

That kind of a cherry picked stats presentation. We were at 2.45 ppd (45th nationally, 8th B12) heading into the bowl game. I dunno exactly where we are now.

You can dimish those stats (and that's fine), but they are not insignificant (particularly ypp). I'm certainly not effusive in praise of Riley, but if we had said at the beginning of the year that Riley would set those records with a true sophomore starting at QB, we would have been happy (also factroring in a 3 new starters on the OL as well).

My takeaway from last night is we are built to be a team next year that runs the ball a crap ton. Two awesome running backs, a QB that runs better than throws, and Jayce Brown on Jet Sweep like Malik used to do.

For sure, but it's also insane this was the most TDs thrown by a kazzu catz QB ever in a season

Very nice game by the offense, and nice of the D to show up in the fourth quarter.
Really encouraging to see Dylan utilized in the slot more. He’s probably the best home run threat running back we’ve ever had.
Avery has a long way to go to be as good as he can be, but that’s a good thing, because he was pretty darn good lastnight. Even with the bad INT, he was making better decisions more consistently.

I think the use of Edwards was one of the more baffling things about this year. Like how many times did we run him on jet sweeps in B12 play? 5? Maybe even fewer?
-
Glad to see Edwards getting utilized in that capacity. Was perfect play calling for his talents. He could have had another 50 receiving yards if not overthrown on the deep ball.
I still despise our play calling but it was nice to see us use a little tempo this game. Our sub 2 min offense continues to be trash, but that was a Snyder problem that CK decided to continue.
This offense can be scary if AJ can slow down the game and hit a deep ball on occasion. Hope we can keep J Brown....need someone returning at WR.
-
I think this is very cool. Must be an awesome feeling for these dudes to re-unite with their HS coach on the sideline after winning a bowl game.

Avery does have imo a ways to go passing at least. So many times it seems he misses a very obviously open man in favor of a guy being converged on. Like perfect example was the two point conversion we actually did convert. Number 0 was wide the eff open early in the play but then he hits Oakley in the back. Yes it was a great play but Oakley was pretty well covered. the Peggy positives is it worked and was a great play, the negative Nancy is he missed a much easier opportunity. He needs to allow the play to develop and wait for the guy to get open, or keep looking for the wide open guy. His best play to me was the 4th down conversion to Cephas. He kept the play alive and allowed a guy to get open.
I'm sure this is all coachable and experience based it just sticks out to me how often he doesn't seem to find the obviously open guy.
I also say this with the he just threw more tds in a season that any other QB we've had. Maybe my standard is high.

I think they saw something and thought they could catch Rutgers sleeping and then Rutgers cheated and for some reason they didn't switch to the kick
Actually, Schiano pulled off a close-to-cheating antic that saved Rutgers a TD. I hope CK remembers to stop play when the opposing team is lining up more quickly than the Cats by claiming his headset isn't working.

The 2pt conversion logic requires that the opposing team is done scoring (or a score essentially equates to a loss). I think it’s generally smart but was dumb to do as early as we did. There are too many scenarios where the other team scores and the math is mumped. For example, we could’ve had a 4 pt lead late as opposed to a 3pt which is pretty significant.

It could be that you have high standards, it could also be that the #2 and #3 were Roberson in 03 when we won a Dr Pepper and michael bishop in 98 when we were a double overtime game away from playing for a national championship. Obviously this season was not nearly as successful as those other 2.

The thing about Avery is that everyone had really unreasonable expectations for him this year (I.e. having pretty high odds for the heisman). He had some accuracy issues. He wasn’t a particularly aggressive runner. And he made some really bad decisions.
He also had a very nice year for a sophomore QB. So yeah, it’s an expectations thing mostly. He’ll get a lot better, imo, and he’s already pretty good.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/1284371/2019/10/11/college-football-two-point-conversion-decisions-manny-diaz-pat-fitzgerald/
Here’s the basic math when trailing by two touchdowns: Say you have a 50 percent chance of converting a two-point attempt. Across two potential attempts, you have a 50 percent chance of winning the game in regulation (by converting the first one and making the PAT), a 25 percent chance of going to overtime (missing first, making second) where you have a 50/50 shot and a 25 percent chance of losing in regulation (missing both).
That means you have a 62.5 percent chance of winning if you go for two first, compared to 50 percent if you play for overtime. Those numbers aren’t exact; they change based on team and obviously assume making the extra point, which Miami didn’t, but that’s the gist. The strategy is also backed up by a 2017 FiveThirtyEight study. Here's the 538 link https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/when-to-go-for-2-for-real/

Yeah, I get all that with respect to 14, and thought I explained the same in my post. Of course as was pointed out in the thread, that presumes the other team won’t score again. Makes some sense in desperate times at end of game. Fh did it down 17 halfway thru the 3rd quarter.
-

I mean the premise is the same right? If you have the ability to get 18 instead of 17, the math works to try to get 18. The probability of getting one 2 point conversion out of 2 doesn't get smaller because you also need a field goal.
This presumes the other team won't score another touchdown and then converts a 2 point conversion. The opposing team scoring again shouldn't make a difference. After the TD, the deficit was 11. Another FG by the opponent makes the deficit 2 TDs regardless, another TD and extra point makes the deficit 2 touchdowns and a field goal regardless. You'll still need the 2 point conversion that you missed, it's just now it's to tie instead of taking the lead.
