Title: BYU/Cats game
Post by: Katpappy on September 21, 2024, 09:30:12 PM
Hope this game starts on time.  There's still over 13 minutes left on the USF/Miami game.

Disappointing fg after a dominant drive

Avery looks sharp. Didn’t love either of the downfield throws but I like that we had them in there. Second one seemed like he could have just rushed for 10-15 easy.

Yeah, I'd like him to run when everyone is covered

Like 7 said, a little disappointing to end a dominant quarter with a 3 point lead but I’ll take it.

You must score TDs on the road if you're going to do these long drives

The good news is we have a lot better athletes but we are getting out coached. Should still prevail.

And then we will have a goddam 20 minute halftime

Ok let's see what we can cook up with Avery in the 2 minute drill.  Hopefully someone has alerted Klieman that we have all 3 timeouts left and can't take them to the second half.
Title: Re: BYU/Cats game

It’s wild we haven’t punted and have 6 points. That’s the biggest reason the FGs seem like killers.

We completely controlled the pace in the first 25 minutes when they had zero points. We may not be able to pick up the scoring pace but there’s no actual reason to think we can’t.

We can put 3 TD's on them in the 2nd half, just have to play uptempo. Just let Avery cook and if you lose by 20 so be it.

Piss poor play calling on the Giddens fumble drive. Weren’t even trying to score.

AJ has a bad habit of throwing to RBs who aren’t looking for the football yet. It was gonna bite us eventually.

Depends on how we do in this game…

Probably fair to say KU isn’t going to present as much of a challenge as initially thought, but  if we don’t regroup vs BYU then I don’t feel great about any of them.

Klieman always wins one he shouldn't and loses one he shouldn't. Unfortunately for us there are no games until the playoff that we shouldn't win.

Or maybe fortunately?  :crossfingers:

All but 3 of their points has come from an extremely unlikely play.

Kleiman is fine. Everyone is really. We just weren’t ready for a late away game in front of a hostile crowd.

As you probably know, 35 of their 38 points were scored thusly:
TD drives of 27, 29, and 38 yards
Fumble return TD
Punt return TD

They discovered a way to win big without accumulating total yards.  It's like a more ridiculous version of what we did to Arizona last week.

It was always going to be hard for us to win without scoring any TDs.

Come on this wasn't some close loss.  We got dominated.  The only reason we out gained them on yards was because they didn't have to drive down the field.  They probably could have if they needed to. Our defense was a sieve in the second half.

We outgained BYU by 120 yards, out-possessed them by 6 minutes, and got 17 first downs to their 14.

This game was 100% determined by mistakes, which could be fixed within a week. It doesn't mean we're going to be playing for a Big 12 championship, but it also doesn't really say much in the opposite direction.

Center sets the tempo for the lineup, Avery gets the turbo call from Matt right after the past play is completed. Make sure your boys are set. It shows immaturity and lack of discipline.

Think of the walk in tudder we had and it got called back early. Just a lot of things that could have been avoided. I like to think the guys can bounce back. This game will haunt some players for a while.

Yeah and those were close bouts. We got the doors absolutely blown off of us. We did so much more for BYU than we did ourselves this week. Looking ahead, eliminating those penalties and having guys be leaders and look after each-other. Hold eachother accountable, Riley is more concerned with calling shitty plays than coaching the O-Line and it shows.

How many passes were dropped tonight?  On target passes.....

I count 4 alone in the first half off the top of my head.

Our OL isn't inexperienced. They just suck.
This, i truly believe this is the least disciplined OL in 15 years. The amount of penalties on a center tonight is unacceptable and totally avoidable

Easiest way to avoid it is not playing a night game in a different timezone in front of the loudest crowd probably any of those guys has seen (aside from the KSU Cats on defense of course).

They played on the road @ UT last year @ OSU last year. We don't play in the Mountain West.

We lost both those games...

My point was it's silly to think we rolled into some extreme environment on the road the likes of which our players have never seen. That's laughable.

As a UT season ticketholder for 3 years (including a national title run), I can affirmatively say the crowd environment in the DKR is pretty pud. OSU is probably much closer and that was a massive upset at the time (in which Avery did not start).

Big takeaway is a ball control offense and bend but don't break defense can't give up 2 non offensive TD's and 2 more turnovers deep in their own territory. Kinda renders everything else moot

the end of the first half was recoverable as bad as it was. We come out and score a TD, we are down 4. But then we let them score a punt return for a TD.

That was enough for me.

Being there last night, it's a cool setting/environment, but the crowd noise/participation was absolutely pedestrian pre-game and during the game until the ghost of Joseph Smith cursed us at the end of the first half.

After that, it was solid, but I'd argue Okie State and Iowa State are louder. A motivated Boulder might be too.

Losing could actually help us host. If we’d have went undefeated, we’d likely get a bye into the semis.

Apologies for the paywall - Avery Johnson described playing at Provo as being "weird", but in a good way.
