They really are making progress, last year's UTEP team loses by 50 at Tennessee, even a terrible Tennessee team.

They are 0-3 and have been outscored by 70+ and have played 3 bad teams. I don’t anything about their team let year but holy crap if that’s improvement.

I hope going winless doesn't steal Dimel's zest for life
-
We need a FB so bad.
-
Feel bad about bad mouthing dimel, he’s orders of magnitude better than what we have now.
-
That was tough, one of the two games I hoped would become a win. November 2 against Rice is the big one, let's get it!

UTSA is fun to watch.

-
Yeah. He stinx and I hate him but I'm kinda cheerin for him, ya know? Hate 2 see some1 go winless unless it's the thunderhawks.
-
They're absolutely getting a win or two this year. They nearly beat both of the better teams on their schedule, one more tough matchup this week, then the rest are winnable. They're better than Rice. Winnie is hurt, BTW.

They're also going to beat Western Kentucky in two weeks
-
Seems like Winnie and The Dane gave these Miners the shot in the arm they needed. 1-8, baby!
-
I can’t imagine ignoring how big of a win that is for them after being winless for years and also declnouncing what he did for our offense in his last couple of years. Sounds tiring. Probably still a Frank guy to do this type of thing.
-
Who's ignoring? I'm extremely happy for them and all UTEP fans. They are absolutely Let's Roll Miners to 2-10, which is not much worse than we're going to end up this year.

The one thing I’m sure of is Dimel (both of them) are way better than the current versions we have.

Does Dimel run the QB battering ram there?

He's going to sit out a year to go there? :Yuck:

I'm a little too lazy to look it up. Is he making more or less as head coach of UTEP than he was as an assistant under Snyder?

Dimel won at Wyoming as HC (22-13 in 3 years at a hard place to win) and got a raw deal at Houston (went from 0-11 second year to 5-7 third year and got fired because of a new AD). Then, Art Briles came in and went 16-20 in first three years before going 10-4 in fourth year. And, the rest is history.
Point is, Dimel could produce 8-4 type seasons at UTEP and that would be successful there.

If Dimel did produce 8-4 type seasons at UTEP, they'll build a damn statue of him there.
-
Fair enough - they've had six winning seaons in the last 50 years and made a total of six bowls. I suppose 7-6 every year would be perfectly fine. They are actually the fifth-worst D-1 program all-time with a .396 win percentage (ahead of only Georiga State, Charlotte, FIU, Kent State).
Good luck, Mr. Dimel.

Was Arm Hair Quarterback an actual coach for them or quality control? I think he's currently a quality control coach at Iowa State...

He was a coach at UTEP. We're burying the lede that the team with the fewest wins in the FBS the last 10 years have multiple quality control coaches and we only have one for special teams.

Is Defensive Quality Control coach Taylor Godinet a joke to you?

Oh yeah, my bad. Why don't we have one for offense?

Because there is no quality to control

I saw the year end Offensive Quality Control report and it merely said "Do not start a true freshman quarterback".

Never let something like a wife and kids get in the way of side-pocketing your soul mate

Reading through that Wyoming message board and realizing that I have not heard about any of those "Scandals". I just kind of look down my nose at them and say
(https://i.redd.it/jf37w5kdf4f01.jpg)
I wonder if Ohio State or Alabama think the same thing about K-State :frown:

You should know about the Black 14. This is a a really moving story:

Appreciate that, had never heard about the story.
But lets get back to the juicy dimel story...how was he our OC for snyder2.0 but no one knew about him playing snooker after hours at a bar with a waitress?
-
Snyder was always great at burying potential stories. When Venzy comes up as a potential HC’ing candidate, nobody talks about whatever happened in MHK.

Literally every ITK ksu wildcat fan talks about the unspeakable sin that Venables committed as the reason why he will never be our HC.

But back to my original point...no way that a bama/osu/even clemson fan cares enough about ksu to know that.
I'm just a regular CFB but even I know that Les Miles was persona non grata at Michigan due to banging gary mollers wife or something like that.

Senior Offensive Assistant....not sure what to think of that title.
I wonder if he and Bret share Snyder stories.
-
From battering ram offense one year with Klein to air raid with Waters/Lockett to somehow making a bowl game with a WR playing QB - Dimel doesn't get the credit he deserves as an OC. Actually was pretty innovative - he was OC with Matt Miller in 1995, which set the blueprint for how we used Bishop in 97-98.
He also owns one of the five winning seasons UTEP has in the last 35 years, so there's that too.
-
I thought he got a lot of credit for being a great OC on this blog at least. His RPO plays were ahead of their time
-
He was almost as good an OC as his promotional materials indicated. I do feel like, despite his kid being legitimately good, he was overused in his offense.

Brutal. Life is too short.
-
R.I.P Dana. Saw this thread bumped and actually got excited for a possible Dimel return for a bit.
As sports fans we can be crass, throw tantrums, etc. over wins and losses, strategy, recruiting and more, but the positive impact so many of these longtime coaches have and have had on young people’s lives over decades is almost immeasurable. And a lot of them started doing it before coaching, even at the college level, was any sort of a big money game, especially at the assistant level.
A good friend of mine who worked at a bar/restaurant in MHK for a long time that Dimel and his family frequented really humanized him for me shortly after he left KSU for the final time.
Lord, have mercy. And prayers for the Dimel family and those close to him.

Damn, RIP. Didn't realize he was at Illinois this year.

On a football note, Dana (and Del when they were together) had the 90th, 23rd, 26th, 6th, 16th, 11th, 60th, 35th and 44th most potent offenses in college football from a ppd perspective from 2009-2017 respectively.

I imagine that 60th ranking is 2015 with Bazooka Joe. Take a look at that roster again. The fact that the staff made it to a bowl game (especially given the QB spot) is one of their greatest coaching achievements.

I was watching that video compilation that has every TD from stra16gt the other night and it was crazy to see all of the Bazooka Joe and Winston Dimel TDs in the Dillons. Was 2015 the year when Kody Cook played QB?

Yes... Ertz went down on the first play of the first game, then Delton got hurt in the second game, then Joe wasn't great and then Cook came in and played QB at the end of the year

Saw this bumped earlier and just assumed he went somewhere else. Damn, crazy it can all be done just like that. RIP

The problem with Cook at QB was that he was also our best WR.

we’re all going to go sometime, he picked the best way.

Definitely not the time and place for this, but I think it's worth having a conversation about whether or not you'd go in your sleep, without warning, or go when you know it's going to happen and you get a chance to say goodbye and do whatever else
