I got lasik on Friday. Pretty freaking awesome. I can basically see into people's souls.
Best part? Laughing at mommies with glasses.
-
Really want this. How much?
-
I wear contacts and have always wanted to do lasik but I'm way too much of a FP. I have a slight fear of going to doctors in general. Like, what if I overcome my fear and actually go through with this, then get stuck with the worst lasik doctor ever? Or what if the eye doctor was offering a "LASIK Surgery Trainee Day" or something??
See, I'm hopeless. :ohno:
-
Can you mess up lasik? I know a guy that had his done in a freaking trailer behind a hospital using a buy one eye, get one free coupon, and his turned out fine.
-
The place I went to in OKC charges a flat rate of $1300/eye regardless. So $2600. Not bad, considering the cost of getting new glasses every few years for 50-60 years.
It kinda hurt while they did it, and for about an hour afterwards, but that was it. I'm seeing better than 20/20 and rocking some sweet ass old man shades right now :gocho:

You pay full upfront? Finance?
-
I bought a house last year, so I got tons of money for the first time home buyer thing, so I paid in full. :gocho:
If you have the money, it's completely worth it. Putting 5 different types of eye drops in all day long is annoying, but it's a small price to pay.

If I went in I'd probably get talked into upgrading to the Cyclops package.

Was this an upgrade? Is that why it was so expensive?
-
I've never had glasses or contacts but my vision is starting to be crappy. Thinking about going direct to this. Trim recently had some super fancy version done and I think his turned out well too.
-
Make sure you don't get the blade LASIK :chainsaw: <---- but in your eye ball
However, the smell of your eye burning might make the blade better :dunno:
-
OKcat- what kind of lasik did you get? I seriously don't think I could have them clamp my eyelids open and then proceed to slice and burn my eyes out. I get freaked out easily.
-
some insurance companies are picking up a portion of the lasik treatment now, anyone considering the treatment should consult with their providor.

bladeless. i get freaked out easily too when it comes to eye things, but it wasn't horrible. they give you drugs ahead of time, then you lay on a chair and they use this clamp thing with suction on your eyeball to keep it in place...it's not comfortable, but doesn't hurt. then it's a pinching feeling for about 15 seconds, then about 45 seconds of a burning feeling, then you're done with that eye, then repeat with the other.
it wasn't the greatest feeling in the world, but it wasn't a nightmare.

That's good to know, but i still think i couldn't do it. I can't even do contacts, I'm that much of a pussy.

I also am an absolute pussy about crap going in my eyes. I suck at even getting the puff of air blown in them at the outset of the exam. When I got the Lasik consult, they said I couldn't get that due to where the astigmatism was or something so I got Surface PRK. It's not as invasive but has a much longer recovery time. Surgery's on a Friday and it really sucks from like Saturday afternoon through Sunday. I wasn't doing so hot during the ULaLa game. Couldn't BBS for a week. Pretty happy with the results. My right eye was worse going in and still is if I close my left, but I don't wear a left-eye-patch or anything so I'm pretty solid with my normal both eyes open status.

Don't you have an overwhelming urge to blink the whole time, or do the drugs take care of that?
-
They load you up on valium, and then put some drops in your eyes, so you really don't give a crap about anything.

I want to hear more about this Surface PRK.

They have a clamp keeping your eye open and a vacuum turning your eye into a grape. You can try and blink all you want, it ain't happening.

I want to hear more about this Surface PRK.
Instead of blading your eye and opening a flap to do work under before closing it, they just work directly on the surface. The benefit is that it's less risky and you don't end up with a flap, which in my case, based on what they saw would've been a problem because the location of astigmatism indicated that a flap might not hold (:combofan: level knowledge out of Trim here). The downside of the PRK is you only get that awesome holy crap my vision is perfect lasik feeling for a couple seconds afterwards and then you're in rough shape for the rest of that day, most of the weekend and blurry for week(s). It takes 6 months to a year to get the full kick-assness. For me, by Monday I was OK driving on known roads during the day and after 2 weeks I was pretty competent.
If you qualify for LASIK, get LASIK. If they say you're not a good candidate, get the PRK. Go to a good place that won't bullshit you though about qualifying for LASIK because it's all they do and/or it's more expensive.
-
Not gonna lie, this all sounds horrifying.
-
i feel sorry for all of you saps with poor genes and everything that you have to put up with (not really). enjoy the eye surgery, on your way out of the operating room I'll be sure and ice you.
-
Can it be done more than once? I want it done, but my eyes aren't horrible. I don't want to do it now, and then in 10-15 years need it again, but can't.
-
Most places I have talked too in the last year or so have free lifetime enhancement. Basically means that if you need touch up in the future, they do it for free.
-
Going in for this surgery this afternoon. Have any of you guys had this done? If so, how quick did you actually recover compared to what the Doc talked about in the consult?
-
trim had some different kind of lasik and iirc it mumped his world up for a few days
-
there is a lasik thread somewhere on here
i had it a couple of years ago, it's been great. the first full day sucks, but then you're ok. you have to take a lot of eye drops, only negative. (also, it stings quite a bit when they are lasering your eyeball to hell)
-
also, i went blind. i have a keyboard with braille for my bbs'ing habit
-
They sold me on the procedure that was an extra grand, but said I should be back to 20/20 by Sunday. From what the lady told me in the consult, the other procedure pretty well mumped you up for a week.

Probably, and an extended warranty/protection plan.......

yeah you got screwed, lols.
i didn't pay extra for anything and was better than 20/20 that evening.
did you buy the lifetime warranty thing? that's another screw job. you are supposed to get an appointment once a year forever but they won't call you back (neighbor got screwed on that one)

No lifetime warranty. I had the choice between two procedures. The one I am having done is where they cut a flap and then laser the crap out of your eye. The other procedure sounded like they just lasered the crap out of your eye with no flap.

Maybe things have changed, but it wasn't a matter of paying an extra grand to not be mumped up for a week. They test your eyeballs and decide if you're a candidate for lasik. If not, you might qualify for surface prk (?) which costs the same and eventually gets the same result but it's not like lasik where 20 minutes afterwards you feel great and can see everything. I couldn't BBS for a week. Also fell asleep during the loss to la-la trying to listen on the radio the next day.
-
oh crap, no flap for me please. great $1k spend imo. :sdeek:

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. It shouldn't be too tough for you to google your head and re-listen to the words they told you which will contain your answers.

PRK was the other procedure that was less expensive.

I just hope I don't end up blind like OK_Cat.

Yeah, you'll be fine then and have no problems seeing the road on your drive to Manhattan for fattyfest next weekend.
-
the only real downside to lasik for me was that for about 6 months streetlights had a nasty halo
-
Surgery was a success. 20/15 in both eyes bros.
