Shameful what Uiznited Airliners did to the poor Chinese guy who just wanted to go home. Beating the hell out of him and dragging him off the plane so company guy gets his seat is sick. If I buy a plane seat it should be mine to use.

free market

free market
I wonder if someone had to pay >$100 more for a flight so that it was an airline not named United if they would stick to their moral guns. . .or take the deal.
My gut says the average person will always choose the cheaper flight no matter how they feel about the specific airline.
-
A lot of great memes came out of this. That's the only thing I care about.

That there are. Just a cluster for them.

Probably true, equally true though would be how many instances that would actually be true. Unless it's a specific hub/destination, most flights are, shockingly, not that far off from each other. And honestly, the last time I flew United was Chicago-KC leg of an international trip about 2 years ago, and before that I think I was 5. All the other times it's all been either Southwest, Delta, or American. Really, the PR is just a nightmare for them, that's the real hot take. United was just barely getting over trying to turn their image around, and then this happens. Oh well, sucks to suck.
-
free market
More like crony capitalism. The contract allows United to "refuse boarding" - he was already boarded. So then they start auctioning the seats, which I'm fine with, until they decided they didn't want to pay any more than $800 and brought the gestapo in to crack some skulls.
I'm fine with the practice of overbooking flights in theory. It was actually invented by a prominent economist and has yielded the airlines something like $100 billion. But the tradeoff is that just like a casino, occasionally you gotta pay out.
What would be fun is if they made it a bidding process. Who will take $1000? The gentleman in the back. Do I have $900? And so on.
-
Reverse auction sounds kinda fun.
-

You know Southwest would make it fun. Oh those wacky flight attendants!
-
I won't fly united unless it's the only option. If they aren't trying to kick you off the plane for over bookimg, they're cancellimg your flight bc it's underbooked and then stickimg you on standby for an overbooked flight.
eff them.

when a passenger purchases a ticket in good faith and the airline decides that they will not honor that ticket, not due to an act of god, not due to the behavior of the passenger, not due to safety considerations. not due any externality, but solely because they believe it to be more profitable to transport another person in his stead, that is a failure of the free market.
when the free market fails, regulation may be the only solution.

This may be one of the dumber things you've ever posted. Contracts are not a failure of the free market. Airlines are able to reduce ticket prices across the board because they can fly more efficiently with overbooking. When you buy a ticket, you contractually take the risk the airline won't be able to seat you because they overbooked, and in exchange you get a cheaper ticket. You want to end the practices of overbooking by regulation? Prepare to pay more money due to less efficiency.
The problem with United wasn't the overbooking. It was not honoring their contract and then using police force to save some bucks.
-
i didn't say anything about overbooking, you dumbass.

the free market will sort all that out
-
Contracts of adhesion shouldn't be confused with free market. I'm not aware of any airline that offers a guaranteed seat option on tickets.
What airlines should do (some may already) is say explicitly before you purchase a ticket: "This ticket does not guarantee you a seat. If a flight is oversold for any reason and you check in after all seats are spoken for, you will have to find another flight." The problem here, which I'm surprised has not gotten more play, is the sheer incompetence of United by realizing--only after all passengers were SEATED (not checked in, not preboarding)--that they needed extra spots in the flight for EMPLOYEES, who they surely knew well before would be on the plane.
-
the free market will sort all that out
the market is hardly free and it's already demonstrated an inability to respond to the problem.
-
Aren't airlines as heavily subsidized and regulated as you can get without being government run?

It's usually printed on the ticket itself.

Which is pretty ridiculous considering you have to give them your money before they tell you the terms.

If you have a printed ticket you deserve to get bumped.

I had a United flight a month ago and it said that mobile boarding pass was not an option.
-
I book united for flights I don't want to go on, expecting they won't happen.

-
I must be on the wrong flights. It's only happened a few times and people always took the $300 offer. Chumps.
-
I've passed up $800 before. If they would have said 40K united miles I'd have told mrs. dave I'd see her the next day at some point. which is weird because the value is about equal but my goodness if I just don't love me some airline miles.

Back then I didn't have anywhere I had to be. The bump up to first class for Albany to Chicago and Chicago to KC was almost worth the two hours in the airport bar. The $300 just sealed the deal. That was 1999, with inflation and a higher valuation of my time, I wouldn't take that deal today.
-
You didn't tell me it was on a flight flown by the Charles Lindbergh

true story alert*
-I once allowed AA to bump me for $300 once. this was five years ago and in Austin where one of my best friends lives. they put me on another flight that would have me getting into mhk one hour later. then they wanted to bump me on that flight and put me on one that would get there three hours later. I said yeah whatever. then they wanted to bump me from that, put me up in a hotel and fly me out the next day and give me another $300. I was like yeah sure whatever. so it was $900 total and I didn't take the hotel but just ened up hanging out with my friend for an extra day which is/was pretty great.
people that are so stoked to get home asap are like the people who were trying to graduate college in four years. like, what's your hurry bros? chill out and enjoy life/airports/etc.

I took 300 to come back 2 hrs later from a work trip. I mean no brainer
-
I read that the guy has to have reconstructive surgery.

I don't really have any sympathy for that dude.

I actually don't either, but it's fun to be mad at airlines for being poorly run and sucking so hard at PR.

I guess it is possible they went to a "Play It Again Sports" for those helmets. . .but they all look relatively new. Must be nice to have that kind of expendable income for ribbing a company. I would just think if you had that kind of money, you might just book your flight with a different airline instead. The helmets won't change United's culture like a lack of income would.

Think I saw this on Reddit and some believed it was not even a United flight, or at least predates the recent debacle. My guess is they were from the same gym traveling to a martial arts tournament and just decided to be goofy.

New video of male attendant whomping and verbally assaulting a young mom with a baby is circulating. American Airflappers. Made.me sick. This was a man in body only. Men don't beat women. God Bless the man and other attendants who stood up for mom. See fox newz.

Take a grayhound then and leave flying to important people
-
She was trying to stuff a stroller into the overhead bin? That doesn't seem real.
-
like 99.9% of these occurrences are dirtbags who act like dicks on flights. Can you imagine working on a plane all day and dealing with KU karla from tonganoxie who is drunk on strawberry mojitos and believes she has a constitutional right to carry on her 75 lb Swiss Army roller? I'd go nuts too
-
I just watched the video and that is some of the fakest crying I've ever seen. Then the idiot who caped up and needlessly interjected himself into the situation didn't help matters at all. Unfortunately we'll have to see bullshit stories like this get publicity for a while longer since airline behavior is under a microscope.
-
And for lawsuits
-
that lady needed to get her crap TF off that plane when told to do so. what a loser.
-
accounts state that the fa almost struck her child and did strike her while removing the stroller. assuming that is accurate, she had every reason to be uncooperative and the male passenger had every reason to "cape up" as some dumbass poster here called it.
sorry that the trains aren't running quite on time, boys. there are more important things in the world. some of you are embarrassing as humans.
-
Agreed, the rules should be applied selectively and at random
-
She's struggling to load something. That doesn't give the fa the right to be a douchebag.
-
Agreed, the rules should be applied selectively and at random
1. she was allowed to board with the stroller, neither you nor i know why, however; anyone who has every flown realizes that before entering the plane she passed at least one, and possibly as many as four points where airline or security personnel had the opportunity to review what she was planning to carry on the plane. any of those points would have been an appropriate time to advise her that she couldn't take the stroller aboard and to provide her with other options. it is not the passenger's responsibility to know and enforce the airline's rules. that airline employees either didn't do so earlier is not her responsibility or her fault.
2. there are probably some times and circumstances where it is advisable to physically wrestle a stroller away (i'm assuming this is what happened, but maybe she was compliant and the dude was just clumsy as eff and hit her turning around or some crap, who knows. it's pretty obvious from the video, though, that the other passengers blamed the fa and not the woman) from a woman carrying a child in her arms, at the risk of striking one of them. her having boarded a plane that has nowhere to accommodate the stroller, and you not wanting to deal with it is definitely not one of them.
btw, i've been on planes where people have had children in strollers, so i dunno if this assumption that she have known a stroller was verboten is accurate.

People inside the airport should've prevented that lady from getting on the plane with all that stuff, but she also should've had enough respect for society where she would've checked that stuff from jump knowing what a clusterfuck she'd cause otherwise rather than pushing the envelope to see what she could get away with.

what a rough ridin' joke.
-
I just flew delta and when I checked in they had a blind reverse auction thing where I could put the minimum credit I would accept to volunteer to be bumped, between 100 and 800 dollars.
is that new based on the current events or have they done that for awhile?

They've been doing that for a while, i encountered that a few years ago

Don't put your kid an an unused seat without working with the gate agent. They rolled the dice and lost.
-
an unused seat that they paid for so that their kid could sit in it. you just roll the dice and take your chances.

actually they paid for that seat for their older son, who they bumped to an earlier flight. they were planning on lapping the toddler. they bought 3 seats, wanted 4.

Was the seat paid for or not?

I think they paid for both flights

nope. paid for the seat for the older kid. subbed in the infant. paid for all the seats they wanted.
-
they had a ticket but it was in the name of their older kid who ended up getting another ticket for an earlier flight. most airlines don't allow you to just transfer tickets to a different person. so they bought tickets with the understanding that they would lap the child but then thought that he could just take the seat of their oldest who ended up not flying. i'll side with the airline on this.

this is what i was trying to say

So were they offering to pay them for bumping the not-present older son?

Paid for a seat but not allowed to use it, seems pretty easy to see who is a dick here

Did the older "use" his ticket on the earlier flight?

i'm assuming they paid (if anything) a transfer fee of $50 for him to take the earlier flight

throw the car seat with the kid in it into the ocean. don't get me wrong, I don't wish the kid harm, but his parents should suffer that horrific ordeal so they'll learn how to properly manage the airline reservation system.

Yeah, I understand that part and there is some federal regulation or something probably, but it's still stupid. If you buy a ticket for you and your wife, but decide to take your girlfriend instead, you should be able to.

that's not the way it works though and this incident is only unique because the parents were dicks and there was a baby involved and people don't care enough to really understand what happened so they just watch a thirty second video and then assume the airline was in the wrong (which they weren't).
I'm totally onboard with it being a stupid rule though. would love to have it changed.
-
Did the older "use" his ticket on the earlier flight?
i'm assuming they paid (if anything) a transfer fee of $50 for him to take the earlier flight
no, they bought a normal ticket on the earlier flight to send the older kid home for the whole and express intention of sitting the infant in the older kid's seat on the original flight (because that flight was sold out and they couldn't buy another ticket for the infant on that one).
-
if you're extra fat they tell you to buy two seats. is the fat guy's left ass cheek thrown off the plane while they sit an overbooked passenger in his second seat?
-
some of you are embarrassing as humans.
-

there is not.

Well that makes everything way worse

How does that work when booking? Can you book two seats for the same person?
-
Hurley booked like nearly a whole plane
-

it's "unique" because it's an infant, not an unrelated adult. there is a valid safety rationale (not saying it's justified, but there is a logical rationale) for not allowing unrelated adults to exchange tickets. that didn't happen here. the infant boarded under a valid ticket as a lap baby and the parents then wanted to sit it in the vacant seat that they paid for. the airline preferred to sit another customer in that seat instead.
they let you buy two seats if you want elbow room or for whatever weird ass reason you might have. this is the same.
-
then assume the airline was in the wrong (which they weren't).
leaving every other consideration aside, the airline is in the wrong for having that bitch come up to the parents and flat lie her ass off to try and get them to accede to their demands that they surrender the seat.

Then they own that seat. Lap the baby and keep the seat empty

They paid for the god damn seat, the baby is allowed on the flight without paying for a ticket. They're just putting their gd baby in the seat that is open, it would be no different then if you randomly had a seat open next to you and your friend who was also on the flight with a ticket moved up and sat next to you. You guys are dumbasses.

the older kid had to go home early so they bought him/her a ticket for an earlier flight and then (incorrectly) thought that they could just put the baby in the older kids seat. guess what? you can't. if that was a big deal to them, then they should have originally bought five seats and not four. the fact that they didn't buy enough for all five tells you all that you need to know, but even if it doesn't then guess what, the airline has rules and regs and you can't just sub one person for another's seat and you agree to that when you buy a ticket. it's dumb but it's pretty standard across airlines.

Well the difference is that if there was an empty seat then the passenger they were trying to accommodate would be assigned that seat and it would no longer be an empty seat. It's more like what sys was saying about if you paid for an extra seat for elbow room.

the seat isn't open. the person who was assigned to it no-showed the flight so the airline resold it. that happens a thousand times a day. seriously 1,000 times every single day.

They shouldn't be trying to accommodate a passenger in a seat that was already paid for by someone else (I'm well aware that they are allowed to but idgaf bc that is stupid)

Yes, i am ok w that if airlines can't act responsibly when doing so and treat people w decency. Most no shows are single travelers so this problem isn't common.

let me know how it goes if you leave the royals game and try to get back in
-
Do the royals resell your ticket?
-
No but i'm moving down to it from the Hyvee section after the 3rd inning.
-
None of these things can happen to you if you buy tickets and pick out your seat(s) when doing so and the correct people show up and sit in those seats, right?
-
People are tired of fine print and lawerly bs clauses in everything they purchase. If they had a weasel chopping clause in an airline so.they would have room, would that be right? IMO if you pay foe a.reservation that seat is yours unless your plane can't fly. United bumps people with the lowest price tickets first - this wrong. Late comers should be the first bumped. The article I read about kicking this family off.the plane said as.they were.leaving 4 PEOLE came on the plane.to take.their seats. Threatening to throw the parents in jail worked I guess. Ahole Airlines should be punished or boycotted.

guess what, that family has rules and regs that you can't just give away a seat they paid for to someone else. the airline agreed to those when they took their money. tough luck for the airline, but they should have checked. fairly standard actually, so really pretty dumb of them.

kid left the flight and wanted to let his lil bro in instead
-
No, the kid bought a ticket to a different game and gave the old one to his bro.
-
Guys, I just don't have the energy to get worked up about every person who has a bad experience flying.
-
An apt Royals comparison would be: family buys 3 tickets for Saturday night with the intention of having the young kid sit on Dad's lap. Older kid's friends are going Friday night so Dad says "sure, go with your friends" and buys a ticket to Friday's game for the older kid. Dad decides to keep the 3 tickets for Saturday so the young kid can have his own seat.
-

The older "kid" is an 18 year old adult.
Lesson for those in a similar situation in the future: When you arrive at the gate and they wonder why your ticket for an infant says that it's for an 18 year-old, tell them that you purchased the ticket online and thought you were specifying 18 months.

According to the dad, Delta knew they were planning to use the seat for the younger kid when they boarded the flight.

The lesson is that Delta knew too much if they knew that the ticket was not purchased for the infant. This is a purely practical lesson. No judgement about right or wrong.

This would be the key detail in my mind. I cannot fault an airline that re-sells a paid-for seat if the seat-holder does not show up (which I think is what must have happened as far as Delta is concerned). I'm sure anyone who has flown frequently enough has benefited from this policy. However, if they were told in advance that the paid for seat was being used by the person paying for it, then it's either a case of incompetence or pure greed on Delta's part.

I'm on a Southwest flight at Americas best airport and they have 140 on board but manifest only shows 139 so they are going up the aisles checking all ID's.

would be so much easier with assigned seats
-
What do you know, not sure who's fault (I guess by default the airlines fault), they admitted a child incorrectly (lap vs ticketed).

They ought to just ban lap children.

GTFOOMF with your 350 lb allowance for bags and being pissed that united won't do your lazy ass job for you. If I was United I'd load his 400 lbs of crap up for him and then release the bomb doors at 35k feet raining it down on flyover country. If I was United I wouldn't give any extra allowance to military to begin with.
United gives 3 checked bags to international three cabin first class passengers, they give 5 free checked bags to soldiers
United gives 50 pounds per bag as an allowance to economy passengers, premium cabin passengers, elites, and soldiers are allowed to check 70 pounds per bag without an overweight fee

Apparently United agent hates killerjoes. Must have been an Obama disciple or muslim. Soldiers should be given leeway. The agent sbould have to kiss his butt. SteveDave do airliners have bomb doors? I hope I never get bonked by falling debris. This videoing of jetflying beeves has to quit.. Last week a family got kicked off the plane for trying to store a bcake in the overhead bin. They were trying to put in the bin container for safety gear. Attendant made them put it under the seat, when he turned his back they put the cake overhead. Peeesed off him big time and family cussed him too. They tried to make a big deal of this. I guess the cake might have been heavy also.

Yeah, I'd throw that family the eff off the plane as well.

I'm ok with a regulation that forces a company to only sell a product one time.
It is not outrageous to suggest that airlines find a business model that allows them to make a profit without relying on screwing consumers.
Honestly, what kind of business claims that it can only make money by selling more than they can accommodate? The only reason we accept it is because they have been doing it for so long and it is protected by the government.
-
The real only reason we accept it is that it results in lower fares for everyone.
-
Yeah, people act like air travel is some service they deserve on their own terms. I'm very free market capitalist when it comes to air travel.

Late arrival on connecting flight. Had to check my bag rather than use the overhead storage.
Is this grounds to rage?

Late arrival on connecting flight. Had to check my bag rather than use the overhead storage.

lol no. Be thankful you made the flight.
-
Also be thankful that your second plane even took roller boards. I almost always put everything in a backpack because of the tiny overhead bins on the planes I take to tiny towns.
-
I start in a small airport. So I'm usually good. Gateway check and go on the full flights. CLT connection would have had room for my roller if we'd been on time. I keep the AA card just for the priority boarding.
-
Apparently more than one person can board a United plane with the same boarding pass. Seems like the whole point of them checking your boarding pass would be to prevent this.

I agree but this guy and his dad both boarded the plane with the dad's boarding pass. The guy accidentally had it up on his phone instead of his own, and then the dad had a printed version. So then they thought the son wasn't on the plane so they had to come back and ask if he was there.
Unfortunately, they didn't drag him off the plane for using the wrong boarding pass.

United bumped a passenger with hihj airline mileage out of her 1st class to give it to her Highendness Congresswoman Lee. Dang Congressional members can wait for a flight like us deplorables. United should be penalized; treated this commoner like dog dung.

From The Daily Caller about this queen.
"The latest airplane drama came this week when a United Airlines passenger said she was booted from her first class seat to accommodate the Texas Democrat, who shot back by saying the only reason the woman complained was because Jackson Lee is black.
But previous reports show the House member, who was elected in 1994, has had a history of transportation drama, including berating flight attendants on first class flights and making her Congressional staff drive her one block, while waiting on her for hours and disrupting traffic.
She's been documented calling her employees 'you stupid motherf***er,' while referring to herself as Congressional royalty.
'You don't understand. I am a queen, and I demand to be treated like a queen,' she was quoted saying in 1998, three years into her nearly 23-year tenure on Capitol Hill. "
I would go into a hissy fit if I learned I got bumped by an airline to accommodate some sanctimonious Congressional queen. I am just as important as this ripper.

I'm pretty certain graduating from Harvard law eliminates you from the commoner class
-
Pretty sure she didn't end up losing airline miles either.
I get that United probably screwed this up. I don't know if the congresswoman was responsible in some way or not. The fact that this passenger wants United's CEO or whoever to publicly apologize for her sitting in coach is absolutely absurd.

-
Is there even an issue here of this lady getting "bumped?" She's claiming she was bumped b/c United wanted to appease this politician. United claims the lady canceled her flight, or at least a leg of it, and that's why they thought there was a 1st-class seat to put the politician in. I don't know who's lying, but I'd be surprised if United went with a story that could be disproven so easily if it wasn't true.
-
i'm assuming her version is accurate.
-
she dismisses gestures made after the event went public as pr gloss. i would as well.
The formal written apology she's demanding wouldn't be "PR gloss"?
i'd put that more in the category of: "if you're going to put out a press release saying that you apologized to me, at the very least, apologize to me."

I didn't see this press release you mention, but she acknowledges United apologized, it just wasn't a good enough apology and wasn't in writing.

she also seems pretty dumb by posting the image of her printed boarding pass as proof she didn't cancel her flight on her app.

^note that I don't think United is at all in the right here - someone made a mistake, she was compensated (IMO fairly), everyone should move on
-
yeah, people love to pile on airlines but in general they do a bang up job of transporting people all over the world 24/7 without killing them.
-
My flight tonight is delayed :curse:

an employee at a service center apologizing isn't an apology from the company. i 100% agree with her on that. those people are forced to apologize from the moment they answer a phone to when they hang up, it's meaningless.

Not me! Going to MHK so no first class. Ugh, commoners.

So the CEO of every airline should set up their desk in the call center so they can personally apologize to every unsatisfied customer.

IMO, the rich and powerful can treat us plebs however they want. they've earned it. the lady who got bumped should have recognized her station and just shut up.

Thank you someone finally gets it ITT

My point is that the Congresswoman abused her office. People in these offices think they are entitled by being swamp creatures. That is why they fight so hard to maintain power. We do as peons do have the power of mass squawking. It hurt the airline that beat the guy who would not get off the plane. If I pay for a seat and the plane can fly, it's my seat and some rich or.powerful bastard has no right to it. Just like cutting to the front of the line.

I haven’t seen any indication that the Congresswoman did anything but take an upgrade that she was given. United controls that, she doesn’t. I don’t think some United gate agent upgraded her because of her office. If anything, it’s because she flies back and forth to DC all the time and has status.
I also don’t get how an apology from the CEO greatly differs from a call center. Neither really means it.

Probably is.the case. I just don't believe the Congresswoman or United. Why was lady moved to cheqpo seats? Why did Congresswoman get to sit in first class instead of the seat they made the teacher sit in? Why didn't the Congresswoman volunteer to move?

https://www.teenvogue.com/story/woman-flushed-emotional-support-hamster-spirit-airlines
Spirit Airlines made this woman flush her support hamster. PETA going.beserk.
-
Not at all surprised reno is an avid teen vogue reader.

that person should be arrested.
-
that person should be arrested.
I agree, anyone claiming a support hamster should be arrested
-
they make you call them support animals, 8man. that's the game.
-
Pretty horrible way to die for that hamster. You’d think someone with an emotional support hamster would know how to make an ethical kill.

Drop a heavy bag on the vermin. I wonder if it had a little red vest on it. Probably didn’t so that is why the airline made a snit about it. I can see a perv trying to sneak one on board in his underwear.
-
I would have just released the hamster into the a airport...

United must not like dogs. Just reported they made a family put it's pup in the overhead bin, pup died. Now a family shipped their dog to KC, but it got shipped to Japan.

is it normal for a dog to be in an overhead?

No, in fact it is against United's own policy.
-
Makes you long for the day when po'd flight attendants would just crack a beer and pull the cord on e-chute.....
-
The dog was hidden in a duffle bag. Not a carrier

The dog was hidden in a duffle bag. Not a carrier
It was a carrier that sort of resembles a duffle bag. It is soft sided but holds the rectangular shape, unlike a limp duffle bag. The passenger told the flight attendant that there was a dog in it and then the dog barked for 2 hours. Plus the flight attendant lifted the bag so would have felt the puppy inside.

If you bring your animal on a flight without a ticket it should have run the gauntlet imo.

Yeah, if the carrier won't fit under the seat in front of you, then you should either get off the flight or take your chances with it in the overhead bin.
-
hopefully it teaches those selfish twats not to bring their dogs on flights
-
My take also applies to lap children. If you care so little about the safety of your child and the comfort of your neighboring passengers it’s the gauntlet.

My understanding is that these people paid $125 to bring their pet onto the plane only to have that pet murdered.

They failed to put their pet into a small enough carrier. Then they were too cheap to get off the flight and chose to risk its life instead.
-
Airlines should find their historically less populated and more inconvenient flights and make them pet-friendly. If your dog’s chill and you buy it a full-price ticket and seat, then it can fly with and in the same manner as the humans. Humans w/o dogs could get cheap tickets on those flights too if there’s room.
I’d pay more and take a shitty path to something like FattyFest that I could plan well in advance for and wanted to take the dog to.
-
More than a half million animals flew in 2017, nearly 140,000 of them on United. Overall, 24 died -- 18 of those also on United flights. "What happened to this pet was disgraceful," said Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy.
ALONG WITH THE THINGS THAT YOU TELL YOUR KIDS NOT TO SAY ON A JET, TELL THEM NEVER TO BARK LIKE A DOG, ESPECIALLY ON UNITED.
-
I sat across the aisle from somebody transporting a dog once. It wasn't that bad if you don't mind hearing high pitched whining and smelling dog crap for 3 hours.
-
only some sort of horrible dog-hating misanthrope would mind that.
-
in a duffle bag, they didn't pay extra and also spoke no English. The dog was essentially hidden
