Title: So I'm thinking of buying a gun (serious replies only)
Post by: star seed 7 on June 20, 2016, 04:19:16 PM
Been contemplating buying a handgun for a while to do some target shooting stuff with my dad and some buds. I don't really know what I want tho, and I also don't really know how the used market works and what to watch out for.

.45 or 9mm?
Brand/model?
New/used?

Gimme your thoughts, gun dudes

I laugh for no reason sometimes. It can be a problem.
I don't know what kind of hand gun to buy, but I have thought the same thing. The problem is that some in town gun clubs don't allow hand guns. I don't want to have to drive too far to shoot at targets. That is why I really enjoyed shooting skeet this past Saturday, it was less than 10 minutes from where I lived!

9mm. Less expensive ammo as well as weapons.

Used from a dealer is my recommendation.

a handgun is going to be harder for you to use, it's harder to aim.  buy a shotgun.  get a double barrel shotgun.

I like to target shoot with a Smith and Wesson M&P Shield 9mm.

If you're really interested in purchasing a gun, go to a range that rents different guns. They will help you find one that suits you. In Louisville, it's $20 or so for the lane, $15 for the weapon rental and another $20 for a box of ammo. Your prices may vary.

I shoot a Walther PPX 9mm. It's the most comfortable pistol I've ever fired. Rent one at your local range of you'd like to try one.

I grew up with a lot of unsupervised time, and would watch tons of cable television.  As a result, I feel like I can probably handle myself with a Bowie knife in tight spots.  So, I don't have much need for a hand gun.

The people that don't like Glocks seems to like Sig's okay.  The one major problem with 9mm is that when the next transgender psycho Immam kills a bunch of people and the dem's start firing up the gun control machine the popular calibers like .223/5.56 or .308 or 9mm or 22LR fly off the shelves and are very hard to find.  So like a .40 cal might be better in that instance.  You could probably get out ahead and buy ammo bulk, like 500 or a 1000 rounds at a time.  Why not start with a little target 22?  Those things are pretty fun and shoot straight.

I'm thinking that the Dirty Harry gun looks a little more scary and intimidating than the Sonny Crockett gun. If you have that gun, you seem like you'd be a little more dedicated to being a killer.

This sounds correct. I'm looking for crockett, but black instead of silver

it's been awhile since I have been in the game, but my recco's would be a Smith and Wesson M&P in .40 or .45, or a Springfield 1911 in .45.

you could also get a taurus revolver. revolvers are more reliable and easier to clean than pistols, and imo, are more fun to blast inanimate objects with.

I would also really like to shoot the DE.  I would imagine that a few shots would equate to a full arm workout.

The op was pretty clear that I want to target shoot with buds and family. I will never kill anything with a gun. Home defense is the least of my worries and really one of my biggest oppositions to owning a gun is contributing to gun crime if it happens to get stolen (unlikely, but it would easily be the most valuable thing to thieves that I own)

Lib, I would think a smaller gun would be easier to conceal into a movie theater for judging those who are too loud.  Not sure the overall size of the ones recommended so far, but keep that in mind maybe.   :dunno:

My concept of shooting people with a gun doesn't include scenarios in which the person is in my house. I'm either in the city streets serving up vigilante justice or in the Wild West where it's either gonna be him or me.

I think an items utility should be central when deciding on any purchase.

If you aren't concerned with an item's utility when making a purchase, might i suggest considering the SLOTDOG in the near future.

here is the repeat enjoyability ranking of guns for non-hunters:

1. ruger 10/22 with a few 30rd magazines
2. a .22 pistol
3. 870 youth model
4. .308 that you sight in at 800yds
5. a dedicated trap shooting gun
6. a dumb pistol that you shoot twice and then only bring out of its case to show your friends after a couple beers

everything after the first 3 is more expensive and requires a lot more effort to enjoy

I'm thinking that the Dirty Harry gun looks a little more scary and intimidating than the Sonny Crockett gun. If you have that gun, you seem like you'd be a little more dedicated to being a killer.

General rule is Harry's gun, and Sonny's car/boat/alligator.

The ruger .22 with the banana clip is a blast to shoot.

A buddy and I used to go to this railroad trestle when we were kids, when the creek below was frozen.  We'd shoot up some ice with his 20ga, then toss the spent shells onto the ice, and then shoot the brass with the Ruger 10/22.  Those shells would fly 20 feet up in the air sometimes.  Really fun.

Tubb's crazy folding shotgun was the gun star of that show

Picked up a Taurus  PT 111 G2 today. $250 with a sticky holster. Heck of a deal if you're still contemplating a handgun .

I've shot a gun one time.  It was some sort of rifle. Shot at some Pepsi cans.  One of the bullets I shot went right through the circle Pepsi logo.  Aim small, miss small.

Food for thought:  do you have any pockets of time in your history that you cannot fully recall?  If so, you might be a highly trained sleeper agent of some sort.  It will probably kick in of you are ever in a life threatening situ, so let that be of comfort to you and your family.  Grats, bro.

You're probably right Pete because a few weeks ago I stood up to get out of my car and my phone was on my lap and started to fall to the ground and I hacky sack kicked it with the side of my foot and then caught it before it hit the pavement. That's a true story.

OK.  Most reasonable next step for you is to stake out a safe house where you can take cover WHEN they discover that you are now "aware."  Also, you almost certainly can speak other languages, you just don't know it yet.  Try watching some foreign films and/or eastern block porn  or something and see which ones start making sense to you.  This will come in handy when you need to flee the country.

No offense bro, but that's a stupid question.  On a huge gun blog like this one, it's a given that we do.  You can just skip to your specific question about your heater of choice and sit back and drink in the ocean of gun knowledge that will come your way.

Very Truly Yours in Gun Ownership,

Pete
