Holee Krap!

Haven't been this angry and embarrassed for my university since EcoCat!

Talking about K-State athletics anymore infuriates me. They used to be so fun, and now our team's are just an after thought of mine. It's depressing and sad. It sucks being in school and coming into some first great few years and see them dwindle down to what they are now as I'm about to graduate.   :(

I gave Schultz and Currie some rope. I was at KSU when Wefald started. he wasn't a KStater for several years but grew into the Purple.

This has been enough. Currie and Schultz have been poking a stick in the eye of EMAW year after year after year. EMAW by the band, EPAW, EcoCat, conspiring to run Frank and pretending you didn't,  Leti, apologizing for exuberance over beating your rival, apologizing for the Enterprise...on and on and on.

We should do better.

More concerned about image then winning.  Buy another ticket, paid that Ahearn donation a little more and pick up a K-StateO #family poster on the way out, don't forget to admire our new mission statement signs by the exits.

it's really pathetic.  I'm sure Schulz has done good things on the academic side, but the way he's handled athletics PR has been extremely disappointing.  I echo Ptolemy's sentiments.

a few years ago there was speculation that currie was "stepping stone"'ing us and that his ambition would force him to hire a good football coach.

I hope that's the case.

a few years ago there was speculation that currie was "stepping stone"'ing us and that his ambition would force him to hire a good football coach.

I hope that's the case.

I think that was a very popular belief about 5 years ago, but Currie is in his 7th year. That seems like a very long time for a stepping stone job.

Trying to get students to not chant "eff ku" is dumb. Whether you like it or don't like it, not much you can do about it. I was at the OU game and I'm pretty sure I heard "eff OU" during one timeout when they were playing some crap song in place of Sandstorm. If K-State gets up in tomorrow's game, and they play something to get the crowd fired up during a time out, you are going to hear it.

Chignon you're a computer hacker right?  Could you hack into the sound system and play sandstorm?  You could sit in a bathroom stall with an incredibly sophisticated laptop and do it. Then when the authorities come in and start kicking in all the stall doors they won't find you because actually you're in a different bathroom and instead they'll kick in a door and some guy will be in there pooping and he'll be like "wtf!"

Then when the authorities come in and start kicking in all the stall doors they won't find you because actually you're in a different bathroom and instead they'll kick in a door and some guy will be in there pooping and he'll be like "wtf!"
Can I get a keyboard that makes beeps and boops?

Bramlage security working hard to explain/dismiss rumors to the students today. Have a "orderly" court storm plan where they file students to the corner, then onto the floor.

Also I guess cussing at the refs after a bad call is now bad enough to get tossed.

It was a legit v. good moment when Sandstorm got played.  NO ONE was expecting it.

That said, it would've been amazing if they would've really gone over the top and had Willie pile drive Currie and then clothesline Schulz on his way up the stairs to hit the sandstorm button.  If they knew ahead of time, they should've really played it up and gone total WWE.

Allow me to do KK's dirty work here.

http://themercury.com/articles/guggisburg-k-state-officials-bungle-handling-of-sportsmanship-initiative?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook (http://themercury.com/articles/guggisburg-k-state-officials-bungle-handling-of-sportsmanship-initiative?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook)

Quote from: superstud Grant Guggisberg

Guggisberg: K-State officials bungle handling of sportsmanship initiative

Kansas State president Kirk Schulz and athletic director John Currie both have children, so they should know better.

What’s the fastest way to make sure a crowd of teens and 20-somethings repeatedly shout expletives at their in-state rival?

Tell them they can’t.

And then drive the point into the ground via every medium imaginable, from a sportsmanship pledge being distributed to students at the game to several warnings over the public address system prior to tipoff.

Then take it to a whole new level by sending out a stern-but-ultimately-meaningless warning via text message at halftime to those subscribed to alerts from the athletic department.

Yeah, that ought to do it.

The infamous chant — “F—k K-U” for anyone who hasn’t attended or watched the broadcast of a Sunflower Showdown in Bramlage Coliseum the last few years — was audible all night long during timeouts.

At this rate, K-State administrators will have to ban all forms of music from the Sunflower Showdown.

Basically any song with a beat can quickly turn into the students’ infamous chant, as the K-State administrators running the sound quickly discovered. Changing the song didn’t really help either, as the students continued to find a way, regardless of music genre.

Seriously, though, what did K-State administrators expect to happen?

This rule is completely and entirely unenforceable. All you can do is plead with students to do the right thing.

You can’t eject your whole student section, and if they choose to chant expletives at the opposing team, there’s not a lot of recourse there.

Holding their favorite song, “Sandstorm”, hostage for nearly a year doesn’t actually help your cause.

Perhaps Schulz realized the error in his ways when he reportedly approved the use of the song in the waning minutes of the second half, despite not attending Saturday’s game, as K-State rallied to get as close as three points before ultimately falling short in a 72-63 loss.

But even appeasing the students didn’t work, as the group only shouted louder as the volume of the song noticeably increased by several increments up to blaring levels as the song played for the entire timeout.

I get why K-State doesn’t enjoy the chant and the bad press that comes with it. It’s not a good look for anybody involved, including the students, and especially in front of a national television audience. It reflects poorly on Currie and Schulz, too, so I’m not faulting them for trying to discourage it.

But their methods make no sense.

Videos on Twitter surfaced Saturday of students burning their sportsmanship pledge cards. I would wager that no one planning to chant expletives at KU on Saturday suddenly reversed course after receiving a pledge card.

The truth is, no matter what happened before the game, after the game, on the court and off, there was a faction of K-State fans who were going to repeat the chant as much as possible the whole night.

The smart play here is to ask politely, not forcefully, for students to avoid using profanity, because let’s be honest, there’s no enforcing this policy. You can’t revoke the season-ticket package of everyone who participates, and even if you could, it would alienate a fanbase that already has numerous reasons to give up on this year’s team.

The good news is, Schulz and Currie have the better part of a year to figure out how to handle the next men’s basketball game against Kansas at Bramlage.

Here’s hoping they have the sense to handle it better next time.

Great op-ed. All Schultz and Currie can and should do is make their case in the media, telling students to please rein-it-in, and then go about their business wrecking the basketball team.

When someone asks about the profanity, they should shrug, throw their hands up and say, "Ain't America great?"

At one point, they immediately switched a song out to Poison to circumvent the cadence of the "eff KU" chant.  Worked like a charm.

Actually I don't hate that idea.

So focused on confusing and disorienting the students, that during timeouts, the administration starts and stop 150 songs so closely together that they're impossible to clap to, much less chant to.  The OOD OST is just a confusing, incomprehensible mess of painfully loud sounds, lest the fans will organize and say bad stuff.  I really don't hate that idea. Like a dystopian nightmare.

If we just keep losing games, nobody will watch us on tv anyway, so at least the students won't be quite as big of an embarrassment.

I for one, thought it was a disgrace that our student section didn't lead the OOD in a "Good effort, good effort" chant to really show those BasketCats that we appreciate them clawin' hard for a close loss.

is there something specific he said in the interview that has you fired up?  i thought it was a good interview and he did a decent job defending himself.

His general way of speaking sounds very politician-y and out of touch to me.  I also don't like when he says "people tell me all the they love/hate ________" to justify his decisions.

Also, everything Trim already covered.

Speaking from the perspective of someone working in academia for the past decade, it amazes me just how much Administrators view the students as some problem that needs controlled. The "what if the students get out of control" line is a constant, not just in athletics, but also in the classroom. I was initially shocked by this, but have come to the realization that rough ridin' old people with power like to bully young, powerless people. What students don't always realize is that they hold an incredible amount of power when the Administration cowers behind sportsmanship pledges and forces their underpaid security staff to eject students with "unsavory" signs.

Administrators use arbitrary authority in ways that would make Stalin proud. That's only part hyperbole.

Listening to this ADJC 610 interview, my god I hate it.

There were probably texts and they may or may not have decided during the game to play the song, but it certainly wasn't as Currie described it - as a reward for not saying eff.  Cats were eff KU'n away all day long with it being publicized by every media type there, culminating with kstatesports sending a mass text to students begging them to stop, before sandstorm'n anyway.  Either sandstorm was planned from jump or the administration gave up and decided to play it and spin the circumstances as Currie ended up doing on 610.

Of all the bones those dumbasses could throw the fans, sandstorm was the easiest and least costly for their agenda to make ksu an awful place for ppl that enjoy sports

100% correct. I wonder who the bad person was who three years ago said "guys you know that sandstorm song we've been whipping our hoots and dongs out on for years, definitely don't start saying eff during it, that won't be tolerated."
