Not sure if it was officials error or the guy running clock effed up....but Clem got hosed out of a play.  Could have spiked ball and had :09 or :10 on clock.  We will never know if they could have gotten closer FG that a Bama player doesn't partially block.

Great 1st half.  I thought Clem slightly outplayed Bama. The TO and short field was key play why game is tied

Total blown assignment by Clem Secondary and the safety specifically. Only 1 DB on the 2 WR/TE to start the play, and then safety never even came over to help and let the TE get deep. Just poor.

At least Clem got 3 pts back

Huge play to start the 4th.  If Clemson can get the stop on 3rd down, they should have ball in Bama territory after the punt.

If #15 runs to the the front of the goal line like he is taught, that ball is downed at the 1 yd line. He let up and didn't get to his spot in tine. Costly....19 yds costly

2 Special teams plays (7 pts and the equivalent of a Turnover)
2 broken plays on Defense (easy TDs)

550 yards vs that great Bama Defense. Hats off to D. Watson and the Clemson offense

Bama only had 32 yds rushing in 2nd half but still scored 31 pts (24 by the offense)
3 catches of 50+ yds by the Bama TE

There has been quite a bit of justified talk about the onside kick. I also thought that the ball had to travel 10 yards and either hit the ground or have been touched by the receiving team. I know for sure in high school it must hit the ground AND travel 10 yards, but it doesn't sound like that is the case with college. However, the rule isn't completely clear.

https://twitter.com/jayfeely/status/686804165453058048

Under article 3 above, #1 definitely didn't happen. #2 did happen, but combined with #3 it just adds confusion.

To be fair, if the Clemson player had simply made an attempt to go field the ball while it was in the air, the Alabama player couldn't have touched him or it would have been kick catch interference.

The sub-articles contain the 'or' operator, so #2 is true and #3 being false shouldn't matter.

The title game belongs on network TV. Do all of simulcast stuff on ESPN, ESPN2, etc., but the main feed needs to be available to the masses.

That makes sense, but this is also why including #3 at all is confusing. The general conception by many in football is to assume the ball has to hit the ground on an onside kick. I know they changed some of the onside kick rules in the last few years for how many players can be on either side of the ball and the fact that the receiving team can fair catch a kick that bounces once, but I'm not sure if this was included.

I've never ever heard that the ball has to hit the ground.  The reason they kick it off the ground is to take away fair catch.

Its probably the connection to high school where I know the rule is both hit the ground and travel 10 yards.

College now allows a fair catch on one bounce.

I agree, CFB is the only major (even including hockey, not sure on mls) with the title game on cable right?

That number is pitiful for an exciting game with almost an exclusive window (there were only 3 NBA games and zero non low major CBB games)

if you're too poor to be able to afford cable television, then you don't deserve to spend 3-4 hours watching a football game on espn

Is the rating partially due to splitting viewers among 5 different channels?  After flipping through them I have a hard time believing many people watched anything other than the ESPN feed as most were hot garbage.

They put it on espn because it bumps subscribers in an Era where they are losing people pretty quickly.

Of course it gets higher ratings if on network.

The question is what gets the highest combined rating:  Championship game on ESPN and something else (reality show?) on ABC  OR  championship game on ABC and something else (women's college basketball?) on ESPN.

The difference between the most meaningful regular season and a championship winner largely dictated by the choice of a committee.
