Title: Back Problems
Post by: 420seriouscat69 on September 08, 2015, 05:04:17 PM
I threw out my back today while golfing. It was awful. I couldn't move for 45 minutes and just laid there. I took some crazy pain medicine, but it still feels like a thousand knives stabbing my back and I start my new job tomorrow. Any pro tips on fixing this thing?

Massage(no katdaddy), pain killers(like 800mg of advil), heat/cool cycle.  no katdaddy.   I mean, def go see the doc, but this is what they had me do the one time I did something similar.

You never want to the throw heat on an acute injury.  Ice 15 min with an hour in between, 4-5x total per day.  NSAIDS are fine, but watch how many unless you don't care about your stomach lining.  Bodyworkers are good, if it doesn't decrease at all by the end of the week schedule a doc visit next week.

About 15 years ago I had severe back problems.  I had surgery, which was necessary, and within six months was back playing racquetball, biking and running.
See a doctor as soon as you can.  My surgery was one week before I started my current job.  I was able to do everything required so it worked out great for me.
But my only advice is to not just let it be.  Get the opinion of a doctor as soon as you can.  Just my two cents.

This might sound weird, but if it's your mid/lower back, lay on it and take really deep belly breaths slowly, don't breathe with your chest.

A friend suggested this awhile back and it helped a ton, and worked pretty quickly. It's a natural readjuster or some crap.

How do you breathe without using your chest?

Wacky once you are back on your feet you need to ask a trainer at your gym to help you with some core exercises to strengthen your core and back.  My family of rather tall people have a history of back issues and I was always worried about having a bad back and since my 20s have concentrated on core strength the best I could and keeping my back and core in reasonably solid condition.  At 40 I have never been to a chiropractor and can't recall having more than a few hours of discomfort due to over stress or a pulled muscle.  Give it a try next time you are at the gym and back on your feet. Good luck.

It's breathing into your diaphragm, so your stomach rises instead of your chest. Allows you to take in more air with each breath. Eastern philosophy has a lot about deep breathing. Breathing into your chest makes you more in your head and neurotic, while breathing deeper makes you more grounded, present.
