Who has had one? What was your highest unpaid balance? How old will you be when they are paid off?
What was the degree you were after? Did you get it? Did you get a job in that field? Has your investment in education (student loans) paid off?

I'm too lazy to answer all the questions with the detail sought. Suffice it to say I had a few, owed a lot, paid them off, got what I wanted, and my investment paid off. :)
-
28k for undergrad degree, will be paid off next year I think (fringe Station employability). have a job in one of my fields, cost less than a new car, seems pretty dece?
-
What would a typical government job that doesn't require a college degree pay, say a post office job in Kansas. Would $40,000 be close? Now do a return on investment calculation for how much more you make with your degree.
-
hehe
-
There could be some spectacular returns like, yeah I borrowed 100k now I'm an engineer and make 150k a year, so I figure my 100k investment is earning me 110% interest year in year out. :Woohoo:
Example of good investment (not mine)
-
27cat killing it, as usual
-
not sure about me personally but mrs. dave and I combined had ~$80k at one point. mrs. dave is dr. dave so more of that is her than me but I also had a lot. definitely worth it.
-
I was lucky. Full scholarship first two years, loans for the next two. Private school is expensive. I paid my loans of within four years of being out in the work force. No loans for the pursuit of advanced degrees; paid as I went.
-
the wife and I had a combined 110k, got it down a bit now, if we pay on time it'll be gone in 15 years but I usually throw extra money at them to get them down faster
-
I didn't take any student loans. Just worked on campus like 6 hrs per week and graded tests. K-State is pretty cheap, guys.

It was about $800 per month. I was leaving out the 4 open hours I had to sit around and help people with their homework. Made about $20 per hour. Also worked through the summer and my parents contributed about half of tuition. Had scholarships, too.

so basically you left out about 80% of where you're money came from, great post

I looked into business school, and I figured that unless I could get into a top 10 school the loans wouldn't be worth it financially.
-
i got out with just under 40k total in student loans. i took the bare minimum to pay tuition every year (6 :gocho:) except the last year where i took out 15k to live in luxury and buy a hellantra.
my base compensation was below avg market value for my degree, but i did get student loan repayment as a hiring bonus so that turned out pretty nice.
i'm not doing any calcs for you though.
-
Grad'ed with $21k in loans. CNSWife had no loans. Paid $207 a month for a decade. I have a job in my degree. As far as financial return for me, it is as no brainer as breathing.
-
Undergrad
Fedor - Had a tiny loan when I got out. (worked, schollies and mom and pops covered the rest)
Mrs. Fedor - around 15k (schollies covered almost all, but screwed up last year and did not get the paperwork in on time, took out max loan...partied)
Grad
Mrs. Fedor returned to school recently (i.e. as an old person) app. 40k in loans (interest rate is much higher than undergrad btw :shakesfist:) will be paid off in 10 yrs total.
Worth it - Absolutely. In nearly every way imaginable.
-
if anything i would have taken out more loans and studied abroad as much as possible

i assume business school = MBA? If so, it appears there is a bit of a glass ceiling for corporate jobs in KC w/o a MBA, is that not the case in in SF?

Graduated with an engineering MS/BS and +$40,000 in student loan debt. So basically all of school, had some schollies and parents helped when they could.
However, one thing I regretted- not refinancing my loans earlier. Had to take out private loans because my parents made too much (lol) for federal assistance loans. Guess it didn't help they were both self employed at the moment? Idk, it was a joke if you ask me. Anyways, with private loans can come high interest rates, which for me ranged from 8-10%.
Within a year of being post-grad, and seeing my interest statement to file for taxes, i about cried. Decided to do some research, and took awhile, but found a couple good resources for refinancing. I used 'Darien Rowayton Bank' but SoFi was offering simliar deals. Got my loans consolidated and down to 2.5%.
So basically I figured out my payments so that my interest paid for student loans in a year is exactly the max amount to deduct from my taxes.
Long story short, student loans are pretty much a 'standard' in today's education, but do your research and be smart about what interest rates you agree upon. And eff Sallie Mae with a 10 foot poll wrapped in barbed wire.
-
What would a typical government job that doesn't require a college degree pay, say a post office job in Kansas. Would $40,000 be close?
postal workers make much more than this. but those jobs are quite difficult to get. you can't just assume you'd be able to secure one.

You know that the deduction is really worthless if you make any type of a real living, right?

Also would be mind-blowingly awful as an occupation. "Going postal" isn't a saying for no reason

Also, regardless of ROI, what likely leads to a more fulfilling, interesting life, socializing with your commodities trader friends after work, or your postal worker friends?

Yeah, MBA. It's not really the case in SF. I work for a large company that doesn't seem to value MBA's at all. There are some that do, but there are also a lot of startup-type companies that don't care at all.

How do student loans work? is it like a job application where you can lie about crap and then someone gives you money
-
How do student loans work? is it like a job application where you can lie about crap and then someone gives you money
no
-
Student loans are pretty flawed in a lot of ways. Growing up all you hear is to stay on the straight and narrow. However, you get penalized for doing so. You are classified as a dependent if you're under the age of 24, not married, or have no children. Independent students get a crap tone of grants and loans available to them. Dependents are restricted in both categories and it forced me to take out private loans to pay for the rest of my education. Oh well... Live and learn!
-
you really mumped up not popping out a couple of kids before you were 24. you got some bad advice.

Obvi!

Mrs. Stevesie and I had probably about the average amount when we graduated. Some small scholarships, paid about $500 cash on our tuition each semester. Paid them off in three and a half years after graduating. Not a fun three and a half years, but I love not having an extra payment to have to make each month.
-
I was going to do a quick payoff, but at 3.25% and only a $200 payment, WGAF, amirite?
-

i would pay back a 3.25% loan as slowly as possible.

Well I guess it depends on what you are otherwise doing with the money you would have paid it off with.

I think I'd prefer postmen to commodity traders.

That was my first thought, but then again, I don't know any postmen.

$1,500 in student loans when I graduated. That is like the equivalent of $95,000 in today's $.
Gonna win 'em all!
-
(I was the youngest in a large family. I purposely did not want to have a lot of student loan debt because I saw/heard the amounts my older siblings had. I worked through college and took a couple of semesters off for extended internships. Not saying it was right, but just what I did. Mom paid for about 15-20% of my college as well.)
Gonna win 'em all!

My brother-in-law is a union lineman and he makes shitloads more than I do. He could easily die on the job, though.

I don't know, he gets like 2.5x pay all the time. I'm not sure if it'll happen.

Plus, at 55 his body will be physically shot and he won't be able to do anything fun in retirement and his skill will be useless due to his body being useless.

all the dumbasses pushing back against michigancat's bro in law don't know what they're talking about. and union electricians make even more (but don't get as many overtime opportunities).
on the project i was working on in 2012, when hurricane sandy hit the east coast, about 90% of the linesmen cleared out the day after it hit. they started trickling back a month later, having made more in that month than i make all year.

Actually only one hand. The electricity went in his hand and out his foot. He didn't lose the foot but they had to do a bunch of skin grafts on it and it still has issues.

associates, yeah, yeah, pretty well...Although i think about continuing once a month, but hasn't happened.
-
I have a really low interest rate, so I extend mine out as far as they would let me. I think I will probably pay it off by the time I am 50 or so, not sure. 4 years of under grad, and 3 years of grad school left me with about $60K total. My wife probably has $20K or something like that. It just sort of comes out of my account every month and I don't really think about it. It definitely sucked when I was just starting out, but it's not big deal now. go cats.
-
I had 15k wife about 60k. Paid it all off in like 4 or 5 years after we graduated. Looking back probably should have invested the extra money, but probably wouldn't have. Felt good having it all paid off before we had kids. Go cats
-
if anything i would have taken out more loans and studied abroad as much as possible
If this blog would have been around 10-15 years ago the "how many credit cards do you have" thread would be the "how many student loans do you have" thread

I had the company pay for my higher learning while the Mrs. racked up about 400k in loans. Hers will be erased in one more yr tho. :impatient: That will be a celebrated day for sure. :Woot:

You guys ever run into ppl who continue to go to school, to avoid paying student loans? I've had two coworkers who brag over it, without saying what they're doing. One was at Brown Mackie. She was in her 50's and still in school. She had a bachelors, masters, vet tech, physical therapy certificate, medical assistant, and was going to school to be a nurse while I was there. Translation: Former JOCO wife who never had to work, while she was enrolling students at Brown Mackie.
Now, this coworker has 3 masters and she's trying to enroll into being a doctor of business. I've caught her looking at student loan stuff before at work. Translation: Former JOCO wife, who didn't have to work till 3 years ago. It's an epidemic. Be good to your man if you're going to be a JOCO wife is what I always say!
She told me she wants to teach, that's why she wants to move forward. I told her she can teach with a masters and she gave me a blank stare.
-
Yes.

Yeah, I don't either really. Actually, I take that back, one of my guys in my wedding was getting pretty detailed about stuff with his wife. Then started asking me questions. That might just be small talk from Salina folk tho. @tobias :D

Questions about how to do stuff?

Like questions about "the freakest thing you've done with her" kinda stuff. I mean he asked at my bachelor party and he just got married, so maybe it's acceptable then?

You are not supposed to talk about the freaky stuff you do with your wife. Only about the freaky stuff you do with your side chick.

Drink through penis straws: Yes.
Give dildos: No. (That's only for birthday presents to single ladies.)
Give lacy underwear: Yes.
And we do not discuss specific details of what is going to happen on the wedding night either.

Someone better link Gooch to this thread. @Gooch

I hear a lot of couples don't even do it on their wedding night, because partying and being exhausted.

Didn't sell mine :kstategrad: although I think the settlement will only apply to those who defaulted on their loans
-
This inspired me to check mine. I will pay it all off when I am 58.5 years old if I stay on the current payment schedule, which I will. If I die before then, the debt is forgiven, and my estate doesn’t have to pay it. nice perk of the department of education loans.

I just refinanced mine (before the interest rate hike(s)). Went from $2300/mo to like $730/mo.
