Title: Moms. They're great. Let's talk about them!
Post by: WonderMeal on May 10, 2015, 09:25:28 AM
In this thread, we post about the cool/funny/quirky/awesome/weird things our moms (or grandmas) do. If you want to talk about how your mom was terrible, or a mom that isn't related to you, or you as a mom, find another thread.

I'll start:

She used to sing along to whatever songs my brother liked in her church choir voice. It would make him so mad to hear "Dude Looks Like A Lady" two octaves higher than it was supposed to be, and sometimes she'd add harmonies! Oh man, that would get him really steamed.

Now that she's older, she's starting to act more like my grandma and think up ludicrous situations for why the dog might not be feeling well. It's a real treat.

Thanks, Mom!

Picked my parents up in the Houston airport and drove them to San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl. We sped  past an alpaca farm on the highway and my dad was excited and wanted to turn around and go have a look. My mom dismissed it by saying, "[SB dad], it's TEXAS. You're GONNA see alpacas."

My mom buys adult (more complex, not nsfw) coloring books and has like 1000 colored pencils and will sit and color while watching dancing with the stars or something

No, I have to borrow my friends' kids when I want an excuse to color.

My first year without my Mom on Mother's Day. It was happy/sad. She will always be the greatest Mom of all time and anyone who disagrees is just stupid. (Sorry to all of the other Moms, of course.)

I am going to sound like a horrible person here, but....

I get that they just pushed a human being out of their body and all that, but if they don't want to be in this situation to have to not get paid to stay home, then don't have a kid. Just like everything else in life, if you can't afford it then maybe don't do it. I mean, I think that they should be able to take off work and have a job when they come back, but I'm not so sure on demanding companies to pay for the leave....if the company offers it that is a way for them to be more attractive as an employer.

OK, so let's say that having a kid is good for the future of the society...ok then maybe you should get to take paid leave for one kid....but what is the limit? If someone decides to have a kid every year, is their employer supposed to pay them to be gone for 12 weeks out of every year?

Also, what if, instead of having a kid which just makes another mouth to feed, I'd like to do something that would better help society, like helping build shelters and infrastructure in a 3rd world country for people that already exist....Can I get paid to take time off to do that?

My company started paid paternity leave a few months after we had toddlerdobber.

My company offers two "volunteer" days per year. You just need to inform your manager where you are volunteering. It can even be at your kids' school or something like that!  :Woot:

I don't think anyone is pushing for 3 months paid leave. If both parents were afforded 3 weeks a piece paid leave. I think that would be fair. And then fmla the rest of the 12 weeks if they want.

You should get 12 months of paid leave between the two parents by law

I fear that would raise hiring discrimination against women and (to some extent) childless married men though

There should also be a minimum of 4 weeks vacation by law

You think people should get 12 months paid leave per child for as many children as they want and as often as they want (or is physically possible)? So people would basically just be having kids as their job.

I'm sure there is a way to handle consecutive children, pretty easy to put a 3-5 year period on the 12 months.

The company doesn't necessarily have to pay either, the government should offer 9 months or something and the employer 3 months

Lots of countries do this

This is why there is a water crisis coming - all these countries encouraging people to have more kids when there is already overpopulation.
