thinking about taking a week off and loading the family in the station wagon and then taking off somewhere this summer. i would actually like to go fairly far away, but not too far. making stops along the way and then probably take a different way back. just do stuff and see things. all three of those places are about exactly 16 hours from mhk. where should we go?

grand canyon or yellowstone imo
-
yellowstone
-
Anywhere but Canada. :Yuck:
-
Grand Canyon if not in summer. Yellowstone if not in winter.
-
Yellowstone and Grand Canyon are currently 1 and 2 on my list of places I want to see. As Puni said above, hold off on Grand Canyon until it's not hotter than balls.
-
i was actually surprised toronto was as close as yellowstone. i dunno. seems like it would be fun to go there and observe all the whacky stuff they probably do, that we just don't know about.
-
what will you and the fam enjoy more, city or National park?
-
what will you and the fam enjoy more, city or National park?
not sure. also, it's not like we wouldn't stop in cities on the way to a national park or stop at parks on the way to a big city. the destination is a destination i guess but it's also going to serve as the place where the station wagon turns around and starts heading home. probably looking at a 9 day trip with most in a hotel and some in a tent. 6/3?
-
I mean, its a cave saturated area versus no-cave saturated area. Use your brain
-
I don't think Toronto is as unique as the parks. I guess if you've been to both of the parks and not Toronto I'd choose Toronto.
-
Yellowstone. Hit the Badlands on the way there, then Mt. Rushmore, then Yellowstone. On the way back hit Ft. Collins and Estes Park.

That's a good route from CF3, but add Grand Teton since you're already there.
The Grand Canyon trip has lots of possibilities as well. Pick 2 routes
1) Taos, Santa Fe, ABQ, Petrified Forest
2) Zion, Bryce, Cap Reef, Canyonlands, Arches, Moab, and plenty of stops off I70 through CO
3) Monument Valley, Mesa Verde, Durango, Great Sand Dunes, Pikes Peak
-
If you head through the Estes Park/Grand County area, I will meet you for a beer. Can also probably help your crew out with a place to stay for a night
-
A loop through Badlands, Rushmore, Yellowstone, and Tetons is an awesome summer road trip. Estes and surrounding RMNP are great but you're probably biting off too much for a week.
Also, winter in Yellowstone is amazing if the kids are old enough for snowmobiles. Winter wildlife watching in the park is better as the bison and other animals gather around the hot pools. Do summer and winter trips at some point if you can.

I did basically this one with out TAos

Yellowstone. Go see it before it blows up and stuff.
-
Wait a second. Maybe it's the grand canyon. I mean, if Yellowstone blows up, it will probably fill the grand Canyon with ash and you won't be able to see it anymore. Oh man. Conflicted.
-
Yellowstone is amaze ball(s)
-
I think CF3's itinerary sounds amazing, too. On the other hand, there's lots of HGTV real estate action in Toronto.
-
Toronto would be more fun without kids. The parks would be less fun without the kids

I assume they'll be fine to leave in the backyard while we are gone to work each day?

Yellowstone might get on your nerves but the kids will love it. They'll see lots of wildlife and waterfalls and bubbly steamy weird natural wonder thingys. You'll curse under your breath at backed-up traffic and idiots standing in the road trying to photograph bison and such. Stay at Old Faithful lodge or maybe the Madison campground. Cody Wyoming is a good stop on your loop. Consider jumping just a few miles out of the park into Montana to the lodge at Chico Hot Springs near Gardner...great pools and dining options. There is a decent KOA at Jackson Hole with inexpensive cabins and a pool, great kid place. All of these need you to get on some reservations asap.

go to yosemite and drop your kids off with sys

thanks for the great info porky morgan.
also, it also takes a ridiculous amount of nonsense to get under my skin/on my nerves in real life. i'm basically unflappable.

My favorite naturey place is Angel's Landing in Utah, not too far from the Grand Canyon. Not sure how old the kids are though, its quite a hike and can be a bit nefarious in some places especially as you approach the top. Probably be better if they are older or just childless.
-
Yellowstone is cool. Stayed there with the fam back in '96. A bear went through the trash next to our camper one night.
Grand Canyon is also cool. Back in '94 at the grand canyon I got in major trouble for wanting to finish the movie "Sandlot" in the RV before getting out to see the canyon.
-
Yellowstone is pretty cool, I really liked the mud volcano and the big blue hot spring thing. it smells like crap everywhere from all the sulfur but it's worth it.

Angel's Landing in Zion is an awesome hike. Definitely not for young kids. Teens would be fine. There is a chain to hold onto most of the way up.

yipes!
-
that looks like the climb of death :sdeek:
-
It's really not that bad. I did it when I was 12. Most of it is a bunch of switchbacks (right word?) and then towards the top there is a chain to hold. Amazing view from the top though.

This would be my kids. They are youngish and would barely appreciate nature and such. However, they'd prolly love the RV and online outside and smores and stuff like that.

I can just picture myself up there, surrounded by Asian tourists and fat loud talking American hicks taking in the splendor of nature. Oh look, that guy just fed a bald eagle a chicken nugget!

Some asian tourists had me take a picture of them with their ipad on the waterfront today.
-
Now they've discovered the "selfie sticks." Or maybe they invented them. You know what's more annoying than inserting yourself in the foreground of every one of your kajillion pictures? Doing it with a 4-foot retractable metal spear.

go to tokyo, RD.

Utah is just great. Flew with the family into Denver, spent the night in Vail, then a couple nights near Moab. Did Arches, Canyonlands, and a rafting trip down the Colorado.
Then drove to Zion, stopping at Capitol Reef. Included a white knuckle drive through Grand Staircase Escalante.
Zion is lb for lb the best park in the country.
Then a few nights on North Rim.
Finished the trip with a night in Vegas before flying back.
Highlights of trip:
1. That white knuckle drive, sheer drop offs on both sides.
2. Cougar encounter at GCNP
3. Driving through that crazy fundamentalist Mormon town.
4. Kids in Vegas. Lolz

it was recorded by a bunch of people but happened right before we got there and were told about it by the people still there and then confirmed later by a couple of other people. i probably could have ahd them play it to me on their phone and then recorded their recording on mine. still though, this guy walked up like way, way to close to two two big bears who were eating up some dead thing and he then starts throwing rocks and hurling insults at them. sounded kind of funny. i guess i'm glad they didn't eat him also but man what a story that would have made so maybe not too glad.

It was just right. A hair chilly at start, but warmed up nicely.
