It's fruitless to have these conversations with Beems, because he'll never acknowledge things like ku's little fun with numbers game last year when ku used 18 months plus worth of giving in their fiscal year accounting. He'll then say that K-State did the same thing several years ago, when all K-State did was use the FASB rule for non-profits in regards to pledges to give made during a specific Fiscal Year.
I don't have time to look but there was something else odd about ku's FY 2014 auditor reports as well, but I don't recall off hand. Just like they didn't say a word anywhere in their official auditors report for FY2013 about their so called "adjustment", only admitting that they did it to the KC Star many months later.

KU's football profit should go up next year since they have the lowest paid coach in the Big 12, and aren't spending money on their facilities, other than new turf. #TSCsilverlining
-
The profit argument is so dumb, and just goes to show how delusional your average 'tater really is. Let's say Person A makes $1 million/yr, while person B makes $40,000/yr. Person A spends $990,000 on a new Ferrari and a new yacht, while Person B lives like a monk and puts half of his income into an IRA. Well, Person B would have a higher profit ($20,000) than Person A ($10,000), but that wouldn't mean that Person B is better off financially. It just means that Person B doesn't spend as much (or make as much). It's the same with KU and K-State. KU makes a crap ton more money than K-State, and spends a crap ton more money than K-State. Every single one of you would rather make $98 million/yr instead of $73 million/yr. Quit being so damn disingenuous. Sheesh.

I'm just happy we don't have an eroding piece of concrete overflowing with piss

How deep will that put K-State into the red, 'Pad? Can't wait to hear the excuses on that one.
-
You'll never understand how this all works. It's amazing how dense Phogistan is on this topic.
K-State isn't borrowing any money for Vanier 2.0 Beems. How often does this need to be explained? The largest all private money/in-house funded athletic facilities project in KBOR school history (its not even close)
K-State also paid nearly $40 million straight out of pocket for the WSC, they borrowed $53 million, it cost $89 million. The most expensive single athletic facilities project in KBOR school history. (its not even close)

Except in this example, Person A isn't buying a Ferrari or a yacht, they are tearing out old carpet and buying new carpet, and they fired their gardener, and hired the Kroger brand gardener.
-
KU is the couple that buys a grody 100-year-old mansion because it has "character and charm and tradition" for $500,000 and then spends another $500,000 just to keep the toilets and lights half-ass working, tear out the asphalt walking path in the backyard and replace it with green outdoor carpet, and prevent the entire mansion from collapsing.
K-State is the couple that builds a brand-new state-of-the-art glimmering mansion for $800,000 and spends $150 to keep it looking swell.

im not a financial major but i have heard of equity in my lifetime

OT: How much would KU have to spend on Memorial to not have the worst arena in the conference?
-
beems, if you make so much money and spend so much money, why is your stadium an overflowing toilet(thats not a joke, like the plumbing overflows and you have to walk in piss)? i mean if you make so much money, and can spend almost all of it, why not put it into the sport that makes the most money at every single other school than ku? if you did this, then wouldnt it be fair to say that you would make more money, and in turn, could spend even more money?

I, for one, would much rather own a 1974 Ford Pinto that was completely paid for than a brand-spanking shiny new 2015 Corvette Z06 that I had to pay off for the next three years.

I'm just saying, if I were a KU fan, I am wondering how KU can spend that much on athletics, and at the same time be the laughingstock of college football with the worst facilities in the Big 12. Is Lew Perkins still stealing money? It's going somewhere is all i'm saying.

Ok so we all agree Bill Self's salary and rectuiting budget is money that is well spent for ku but I can't figure out where the rest goes.

you would think rock chalk park but we all know ku didnt pay for that so i have no idea

KU has more athletic programs than K-State and spends more on its recruiting budget. They're also building luxury apartments for the basketball team along with the DeBruce Center, which will house Naismith's original rules of basketball. New facilities are being built all over campus and the football stadium will be addressed in the coming years.

$80 million dollars in long term debt for $190 million dollars in facilities improvements. Huge private money flowing in.
Will take!
At one time ku had over $70 million dollars in debt and it bought about $85 million dollars worth of facilities improvements. Ah, not so much private money flowing in, and that doesn't include the $7 million dollar no interest loan that was taken out on top of the bonds for the AFC.

If I took out a $100 billion interest-free loan and then immediately pay it back, you could say I had $100 billion in expenses that day.
Then why don't I feel any richer than the guy who took out a $10 loan and only had to pay $5 back?

never going to matter when your fans have this train of thought
"Serious question:
What is the true "importance" of a nice stadium?
I mean, if you're a wealthy benefactor who cares about KU, and you have the choice of giving $50 million to the football program, the medical school, or Engineering, why football?
I want a great stadium, but I'm not a med or engineering student at KU. I'm an alumnus of the business school and have chosen to support it rather than the AD. Am I wrong?"

When will K-State's cruise ship start getting the football program some tangible results? You guys are still recruiting the same types of players, and you still can't sniff a national championship. When should we expect that to change?

Define sniff. I sniffed it for a second in 2012 and had a plane ticket and hotel lined up for Miami. So no, we've never played in a 'ship, but I was sniffing about as good as you can sniff before the Baylor game.

well, the front end of the cruise ship (sten? port? starboard? the other one?) is still in dry dock getting built and junk. hard to cruise without a front bud.

KU had to finance that piddly apartment complex with debt.
It's one thing to use debt to finance a revenue generating facility like the WSC, which services it's debt multiple times over. It's completely another to finance a non-revenue facility like a training facility or rape den, which ku has to do. That's pathetic.
Anyone with a modicum of sense about finance would understand that.
-

That's an awful rebuttal in many ways. Here are a few.
1. If we had the same revenue as KU's AD, we'd profit at least twice what your fiscally incompetent AD does. We do more with less and that's not a blemish, it's impressive.
2. Your hypothetical is so hyperbolic that it takes away from the already-weak point you were attempting to make. In your scenario you described two individuals - one earning 25x more than the other. In reality, KU generates approx. 30% more revenue than KSU. If we were the school with the decrepid facilities, I would admit that your stance holds some water...but that's not the case here.
3. Finally, I've noticed that you always love making it about the debt. The fact is that debt, especially for a highly credit-worthy public institution, is incredibly cheap right now. While our donations and revenues are at all-time high levels, we're investing those funds via instruments that generate returns significantly higher than the school/AD's cost of capital. For instance, a large-cap index fund would have generated approximately 18% over each of the past two years while our cost of funds is likely close to 2%. You're probably right though...we shouldn't be preserving liquidity when we could blow all our cash just for the sake of making our balance sheet look "better" to financial simpletons like yourself and your squawk cohorts. Please read a rough ridin' book. I like the increased activity the board sometimes has while you're poking and prodding with your trolling (read: blatant ignorance), but my goodness you're an idiot. I don't keep up with the personalities/stories of posters but if I recall correctly you're having a tough time finding your way in life. T's and P's...but I'm not the least bit surprised.

Great point. Like my point about the cost of funds vs. investment returns, if we're realizing signifant profit margins on WSC and other investments why is cheap debt a bad thing?

Little known fact: there is a tomb underneath Bramlege where all of the Principals of MHS are buried, so what SPEmaw typed was actually correct.

Edward Rooney, Dean of Students, is alive and well but to my knowledge has never been at MHS. Perhaps a townie could help me out on this one?

Pro tip, kids: when it comes to athletic budgets, bigger is better.
An athletic department isn't run like a fortune 500 company. The #1 goal of an AD isn't to return a profit to its shareholders. The goal is to win championships. Period. AD's that have larger budgets can spend more on non-revenue sports, coaches, facilities, marketing, recruiting, etc, etc. There's a reason why KU basketball is competing for national championships and has won ten straight Big 12 titles, and it's because they've invested in coaches, facilities, recruiting, etc, etc. K-State is getting there, and you guys should be proud of your school, but please, quit pretending like "profit" is somehow more important to an AD than operating revenue. For once in your lives, think for yourselves instead of regurgitating a bunch of K-State propaganda from John Currie and his minions.
:buh-bye:
-
don't over think it. ku basketball is good because they've had 3 straight homerun hall of fame level hires. lots of schools invest financially.
-
beems, what are you guys spending that money on? just curious. probably like womens stuff or junk?
-
so turning a profit is bad?
-
you guys (ku fans) must really like basketball. I mean, really, really like it.
-
so turning a profit is bad?
For a non-profit?

will the money not go back into coaches/facilities/etc?

That is an important clarification that someone ITK needs to make. Where does this profit go?

Towards our awesome new facilities that seem to increase in budget after they get kicked off. Also towards white-glove services for the fans who like to be wined and dined during games.

Memorial Stadium is an El Camino up on blocks in the front yard. Beems is the owner telling his neighbors that El Camino is gonna get fixed up real nice any day now. She'll be a real beauty, just be patient.

When was the last time one of you guys set foot in AFH? KU has been doing tons of upgrades to AFH and other athletic facilities. I'm not sure why you find it so surprising, but it's true. Pretty much every athletic facility on KU's campus (and off campus) has been upgraded and/or built since 2008.

lol at bragging about the Anderson football complex. Good luck incorporating that Russian elementary school into whatever you guys decide to do with your football stadium in 30 years!
-
I was there last year and it smelt like an old persons home. :Yuck:
-
why it God's name would you include a pic of Memorial?
-
I went to a game in AFH last year. The upgrades are nice. Although, I was towards the top of the arena, and it was January, and it was easily 88 degrees where I was sitting, seems like they could upgrade the HVAC to not just have the people sitting up high burn to death but whatevs.
I went to the Dillons football game in Memorial in 2013 and it was embarrassingly terrible how run down it is. I'm not GE'ing Beems. It was awful. The little building on the side of the hill might be nice, I don't know, never been inside. If the other sports have nice facilities then that is great.
I'm not sure why, if ku is a sleeping giant, the powers that be are so content to let the giant keep hitting the snooze button.
-

It's nicer than K-State's old facility, and regardless what you think about it, it's a relatively new facility that was just finished six years ago.

Yeah, the football stadium needs work. Every other facility on campus is pretty much state of the art, though. Look, I get it... KU football sucks. There are other sports besides football, though, and hopefully in a year or so, an announcement will be made for significant football stadium upgrades. Winning would help a lot, obviously.
-
why it God's name would you include a pic of Memorial?
Because they've done millions of dollars worth of work on it since 2007. I know, it's still terrible. I get it.
-
Those were some pretty neat facilities. I admit. It's just that the biggest one, the one that generally makes the most money, is in shambles. It's like parking your Camaro SS, BMW X5, Land Rover, Maserati, and Ferrari in front of your double wide though. That's how I feel about KU's facilities. :dunno:

I mean, look at our football teams revenues, which dwarf your basketball team's revenues, and tell me who is delusional.
Winning championships doesn't mean crap. To put it into perspective, one ku football win over semo is worth more than a ladies track NC. One of our mid tier boxes in the WSC makes more money than the enterprise value of every non-revenue sport at both the universities combined.

$108 million dollars in total revenue generation in FY 2014 for K-State. A two year total revenue generation average of $95 million. $35 million dollars given to the annual Ahearn Fund over a two year period and $52 million given towards capital projects during the same time frame. The largest facilities projects in Kansas college sports history . . . by miles.

You know what's weird? How small time NCAA basketball is. Ok so let's say that according to the article ku hoops generated 9.7 million bucks in revenue, and ku hoops is the big dog around here hoops wise. Jeremy Guthrie, the Royals 5th starter, will make 9 million in 2015.
ku basketball is worth financially the same as Jeremy Guthrie.

When you have to try to degrade an entire sport because Big Bro is dominating you so hard, you've already lost.

Hey I mean if I was going to choose would you like KSU to be the best at it, I'd choose yes. I'm just pointing out that in the landscape of American Sports we often overstate college basketball's popularity and monetary value.

:buh-bye:
Sounds like you're wasting a buncha money on sports that nobody gives an eff about.
this can't be stressed enough.
if your goal is to win championships, why not eliminate as many of your shitty non-revs as the ncaa allows (read: everything but hoops and your most expensive non-revs) and focus your dollars on your one single revenue sport?
ku isn't competing for anything outside of basketball. focus on that, quit wasting money on the things you've proven to suck crap at. not everyone can titletown.

pissbro,
KU has won national titles and Big 12 titles in multiple sports outside of men's basketball. If we're going to have other sports, I'd like to see them be successful. Ya know?
