Title: MLK Day
Post by: michigancat on January 19, 2015, 12:41:48 PM
Saw the "who got off work" discussion buried in the pit thread about some republican loser, but it's interesting.

I had to work today, but we got the last two years off. Just got a company-wide email from the CEO that included our "Inclusion and Diversity Vision". Kind of sad.

Most of the black people at work took the day off. But some didn't! What are you guys doing for MLK day?!?

in response to OP though our office is open but mrs. dave's is not. we used to close the office on MLK but two years ago they just gave us a "floating holiday" to use whenever.

All of our work holidays just died.  We now just accumulate PTO at a slightly faster rate to account for it.

Have not seen much evidence Robert E. Lee was a stud.  Mostly, he seems like an idiot who picked the losing side in an enormously important historical struggle for human rights.

Yeah. I do give him credit for surrendering earlier than most would have.

A couple years ago my dad had to work on MLK day because the school district calendar-maker thought MLK day was a week later. Can't really blame the person though because the marshmallow-white district had always held school on that day to that point.

Segregating MLK's holiday has never seemed right to me.

Last week I was at lunch with a black guy I work with, and he's like, "I'm not coming in!" And I'm like, "oh, I don't have vacation". And he's like, "you know we just got a floating holiday" and I'm like, "um, yeah, uhhhh" and then I go back to my pizza.

Yes! There was an organized walk out the year before I got there

Worked today, but my last company we had the day off but it usually turned into a floating day since it's hard to have everyone gone when we deal with so many other companies that don't observe the day.

Knew a guy that used to call it "you be we be" day. He was from the racist part of Kentucky.

If you couldn't figure it out, he'd be sure to tell you: "You be black, we be off. "

Say it like "Youbewebe" and then imagine you are old and racist. I think that is what really sells it.

I think Robert E Lee day is an Alabama state holiday. Mississippi and Arkansas also celebrate the confederacy on MLK day. They probably created it as soon as MLK day became a holiday so they wouldn't have to feel so bad about celebrating the life of a black man.

Apparently he never cleaned out his jacket pockets...

As a married student-athlete with a child at his duration at KU, Floyd's experiences were somewhat different than many of his fellow Jayhawks. He graduated from Kansas in 1961 with a degree in education and decided to get involved with human rights activism. A few years later, Floyd was able to be in the presence of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at various human activism conferences. In January of 1968, Floyd shared the stage with Martin Luther King, Jr., at a conference on the Kansas State University campus and was fascinated by the way King spoke and the type of person that he was.

"He was a marvelous speaker, his prose was absolutely incredible in the way he could deliver a speech, Floyd explained. "He embraced a worldwide concept of freedom and equal opportunity and was moving beyond just the issues in the Unites States. In retrospect, he was miles ahead of everybody in the concept of a world that was free of discrimination, segregation and victimization."

Just as Dr. King made a lasting impression on Floyd, Dr. King may have felt much the same way about Floyd. In 2010, it was revealed that when Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, a piece of paper with five names on it that he gave recognition to in his presentation from his conference in Kansas had been found in the pocket of his suit jacket. One of those five names was Homer Floyd, who was chairman of the event back in 1968.

There was one teacher who was real butthurt that a bunch of white teenagers would walk out of school just to get the day off. Like, he was still butthurt about it 8 years after the fact.
