So I'm thinking about moving there from safe vanilla joco. I live in OP, which is ok, but a little boring imo. Been looking around at stand alone buildings that are old to have a loft like feel....exposed brick, high ceilings, etc.
Problem is that if I have kids, they would need to go to school there. Are any of the schools ok? Do they only blow at the high school level? Is there any option other than private (assuming I love my spawn)?
-
Send your kids to private schools
-
Get your ass back in Joco with all the other family havin' whites.
-
Are you catholic?
-
Are you catholic?
No. Wouldn't have a problem sending kids to a religious school tho, if affordable.

I have a black family on my street, that's why I'm moving! Haha jk, that's not why. But for real, like the only black people in the county live down the street. I'm very cultured because of it.

welp we tried

the KCMO school district isn't accredited. you'll either want to send them to private or sell them. i can write you a letter of recommendation to pembroke hill if you chose that route.
-
buy a house in brookside/waldo. when you have kids, buy another house in kansas and rent your old one.
dont know why anyone without children would live south of 60th st in kansas...

I went to K-State, bro. But yea I know it's not cheap. But I figured if maybe grade schools were at least ok, I could live in the city for a good ten years before thinking about moving. And that's assuming I have a baby in 9 months. If the grade schools are horrible, that leaves home schooling or much shorter time in the city.

I've thought about this option too, only the place I'm currently casually looking at is closer to the plaza/Westport area. It's two stories so could be an easy conversion to a duplex.

move to lawrence
-
just move to westwood/westwood hills
loft living isn't for kids anyway

Maybe someday. Not sure why you say that about loft living and kids. It wouldn't be studio style.
-
ya i'm really coming out of left field claiming that loft living isn't for kids.
i wonder why so many people move to the suburbs when they have kids, seems weird. who wants a rough ridin' yard to play in? not me, that's what i always say.

Relax bro. But like I said, I'm looking at stand alone buildings. They typically have land around them (ie something that can be made a yard).
-
having kids in even a kc/urban environment would be the worst.

I can't say you're wrong...you might be 100% right. I'm thinking that maybe turning it into a rental would need to be a strong consideration in case I do have kids and need to get out. I've been looking at rental property for years anyway so not afraid of being a landlord.

Academy Lafayette is brookside is growing quickly and is a French-centered charter school. There's also Crossroads Academy located downtown. Both are becoming increasingly difficult to get in but you get preferential odds if you live nearby. In the case of Crossroads Academy, those who work OR live between like the Missouri River and Linwood and summit east of the loop get much better odds for the "lottery." Lafayette is pursuing HS options and crossroads is soon to add a middle school program. Both are great options. By the time I really starts to matter for you don't be surprised if there are many more options like these as the consultants brought in by the state BOE have stated that their suggesting for improving KCMO urban core schooling is to break them up and have each school independently operating by not for profit groups. So far, that's been successful despite the locals on the district's board responding VERY defensively to those positions.
Hope this helps.

I live downtown KCMO. When I get home from the gym at night, I unlatch my VW key and place it in between my hand (like brass knckles) just in case some bum or criminal attacks me in the alley by the quaff. Other than that, it's super safe!

Calm the eff down, 'clams.
-
Only freaks and the poor of the poor would live in KCMO.

Nothing but subsidized low-income row houses.

Johnson County is pretty boring but jesus christ man that doesn't mean you have to subject your kids to KCMO schools. Just accept social retirement and enjoy your house.

I always thought it would be cool to be a "city kid."

Welp, eff the haters. Gonna have a guy check out this old brick building and if it's ok, gonna make an offer. Kinda doubt it matters tho, the seller is asking way too much. I would need to put in about $70k fixing it up. If I paid around asking price, I'd be upside down on it after renovation. But fingers crossed

Missed this thread the first time around. I don't have kids but the horrors of KCMO school district get overblown. There are some good schools in the urban core. If you work downtown, get your kids in the crossroad academy...Lincoln Prep is good. Then there is always the private school option. It's going to take people who care about their kid's education to ever fully turn around the district...so more people like you!!!
KCSD now has provisional accreditation BTW
