Title: peppers
Post by: pissclams on April 15, 2010, 10:51:32 AM
Peppers planting in KC-
Pepper (plants) 05/10 - 05/30

Hot Peppers
Anaheim: 68 days: These are the mildly hot, meaty chiles that you buy in those little cans at the grocery labeled, "Chiles". These however, taste much better than canned ones. These plants are about 30" tall and yields an abundance of 7-8" long chiles with a shiny green color or ripening to a mellow red color. This is an easy pepper to grow. (open pollinated)

Ancho Ranchero: 78 days. Better yields and larger fruit than Ancho. Extra-large ancho peppers turn from dark green to red. (open pollinated)

Caribbean Red: 110 days. Hotter than the regular orange Habanero. Bright red wrinkled fruits 1 to 1-1/2" deep and 1" wide. Handle this pepper with care!!!

Cayenne: 75 days. Thin tapered fiery hot standard, 5 3/4 inch curved fruit ripen from dark green to crimson red. (open pollinated)

Habanero: 90 days. Extremely hot small fruit start out light green and ripen orange. (open pollinated)

Hot Hungarian Yellow Wax: 60 days. A yellow, medium hot variety. Fruit average 6-7" long and slightly tapered. (open pollinated)

Jalapeno: 70 days. The classic medium hot pepper. These small fruit can be used in almost any kind of cooking and will keep well in a multitude of ways. The virtues of this pepper cannot be highly enough touted. (open pollinated)

Jalapeno Goliath:  68 days.  30% hotter than the Jalapeno.  Thick walled fruits about 1-1/2" across and 4" long.  Good disease resistance.

Serrano Del Sol: 75 days. Strong plants that load up early with dozens of fruit that are twice the size of a regular Serrano Chile .

Bell Peppers
Ace: 50 days. Amazing extra-early yields of small to medium-sized green bell peppers. Ripens red. (hybrid)

Bell Boy: 70 days. Fruit is medium long, thick-walled, mostly 4-lobed, green ripening to red. All-America winner. TMV resistant. (hybrid)

Big Bertha: 72 days. Huge thick-walled fruits, 6-7 inches long, 4 inches across. Dark green (ripening to red) and tender. Vigorous plants bear heavily. (hybrid)

Gypsy: 50 days. Very early and prolific pepper. Fruits are wedge shaped, 2-3 lobes, 3-4 inches long, greenish yellow turning to orange red. Compact plants.

Early Sunsation: 70 days. Big blocky bell peppers, 4-1/2" long and nearly as wide, smooth and consistently well-shaped. Plants are tolerant to most pepper virus diseases and 3 races of bacterial spot. Extra sweet when fully yellow. (hybrid)

Orange Sun: 80 days. Beautiful deep orange bell pepper is from 4 to 5 inches long and not quite as wide. Thick walls and very sweet flavor. (hybrid) NEW!!

Red Knight: 55 days green. 75 days red. Big, blocky, thick walled and turns red early. Fruity and sweet. King Arthur type with better disease resistance in more compact, open plant. (hybrid)

Other Sweet Peppers
Lipstick: 53 days. Shiny cone-shaped fruit ripen early to red. Thick and juicy fruit are extremely sweet when ripe. Delicious for eating out of hand. (open pollinated)

Super Shepherd: 68 days. Italian sweet pepper. Dark red 7-1/2" length. Early fruit has thick juicy flesh, great taste. (open pollinated)

Sweet Banana: 72 days. Long, tapered fruits with thin walls are light green and ripen red. (open pollinated)

i go whenever i need any type of mexican food stuff - the one on roe has every type of mexican cheese/pepper/veg imaginable.  also they make fresh tortillas daily.  some people call it "little mexico".   i think b/c it's so close to the dotte or something.

last think i need is peppermaster sys telling me what i can grow in my community garden space.  dumbasses.

wow lots of dumb asses here.

Store bought peppers are fine the in the winter or a pinch, but fresh grown peppers are in a whole different league.  Night and day, day and night goodnight!

AVOID these cultivars:
giant jalapenos/ serranos (they have an unpleasant texture and bitter skin)
any chile that purports to be "hotter" than its normal counter-part (they have a distinctly nasty metallic quality [this is always seems to be present in habaneros, which is why I don't use them] )

If you want a HOT (~habanero range) chile grow datil peppers.  They just taste better.

I used to be able to sit down with a bag of Fritos Scoops and a bottle of Green Jalapeno Tabasco sauce and down both in under an hour and not gain an ounce.  If I did that now I'd be praying for death 1/4 of the way in and gain 5 pounds.

This. While it is true they derive their name from their location, they are completely different. You won't usually look up a chile chart and find them. But if you ever get the chance to try them you will taste the difference. Can be grown at different heat levels from mild to extremely hot, but it is the flavor that really separates them.  :lick: Have a freezer stocked full of them right now. A necessity when you make hamburgers.

Typically you will grill/roast them and peel the skins off. Then either dice them up or just throw them on top of the burger or chicken sandwich as is. I like to use them in shredded beef for burritos, tacos, etc. Great for making true chile rellenos or green chile enchiladas. Make a roast and toss them bad boys in with the veggies diced up. Their pretty versatile and great in a lot of dishes. I typically buy a 40 lb. bag every year at harvest time, have them roast them in their big tumbly roaster things, take them home all hot, peel them and then throw 'em all in the freezer. Ready for use any time of the year. Any time my family comes down to visit they usually steal a bunch to take back since it's hard to even find canned green chile in the KC area. Big Jims are good as well. Just different variety.
