Title: 2001 #9 K-State vs. #3 OU
Post by: MakeItRain on October 13, 2014, 03:27:13 PM
This game is on ESPN Classic right now and holy crap, I forgot just how good Ell was. I have no idea why/how this 2001 team turned out so garbagey, there's do much talent on the field.

Also lol at the concussion protocol in 2001, Nate Hybl was knocked stupid at least twice in this game.

No kidding. Phil Bennett's patented all-out blitz left Hybl sketti-brained.

2001 offense had some major issues staying on the field...hung an inexperience defense out to dry. I think someone had fumblitis too if I recall.

I do remember the Cats blew a 17 point lead at home to Texas A&M and lost. They just had a knack for screwing up.

17 penalties for 139 yards

Also this game had the old timing rules when the referee decided when to start the play clock. Hybl got sacked forcing a 4th and long with 59 seconds left, it took the referee 22 seconds to start the play clock.

IIRC the same thing with the play clock happened later that season as well, Colorado maybe?

Well, the Buff game was interesting because as soon as we got any offense going...they flagged a Wildcat for taunting simply for signaling a first down. Killed the drive, we punted and they scored on the next drive. No answer for Chris Brown. That guy won them a Big XII Title.  '01 sucked..weird year in the Big XII...

Ell had ridiculous talent and would make mistakes that you would expect from a young player in about any sport that knows he has the talent.  You could see the greatness and also the stupid mistakes.  I think Sams had some of that ability which is why I was so sad to see him go.  Rodriguez in basketball too.

Trevor Knight is the same way.  I thought OU was overrated this year because although he is very talented, he just hasn't put it all together yet.

Yeah, the 22 second ball spot, coming off the tipped pass PI call in the 00 Pepper.

Really could have used some Pollard in the pressers back then.

We didn't go Pollard but we submitted a complaint.  I believe the B12 came back and said 22 secs is pretty standard, STFU.

Very K-State vs. good teams game. Get down after a wretched, error-filled start, make enough exciting plays to torture fans into continuing to watch while never really having a shot to win.

Happened at the end of '04 KU I know.

As far as the 2001 team not playing to their talent, the Big XII was really good that year, and the CU and A&M games we had horrible turnover after horrible turnover.

Offensive line was young, tho. Wasn't it Lecky's freshman year and he started. I watched the Nebraska game on YouTube from the next year. rough ridin' awesome team. It really could have won the NC with some breaks.

Our 2002 team would be favored head to head against any other Cat team.  Loaded with talent.

Pud non-conference schedule cost us that year; weren't quite ready for Big 12 play.

Our QB play was atrocious in '01.  Ell was very good in '02 and '03, but outside of his stellar OU game (which included that pitch to nobody), he wasn't very good.

Our O-Line play was pathetic that year too.  But yeah, E3 had serious growing pains in '01.

Musburger & Herbstreit were BITB on the 7 pm ABC games.  I actually enjoy Palmer but there haven't been many interesting SEC Network games, Brent is at point in his career where he doesn't have to fake enthusiasm for dog poop games.

Yeah, eff ESPN for that and they nerve to label the game a "Gridiron Classic."

Next week they're replaying the 2006 UT vs. KSU game. I love that they play that game but it seems to be the only KSU UT game they replay. Frankly I'm partial to the '99 & '07 games.

Back to the '01 game.....it seems like we got the ball back around midfield with maybe 7 seconds left or so?  One option would have been to run a quick out to get close enough for a semi long field goal attempt with no time left.  But since our kicking game sucked that year we had to attempt a lame Hail Mary instead.  Am I remembering this right?

'02 Colorado was one of the most disappointing regular season losses of all time.  The '03 Marshall-Okie St.-UT trio kind of blend together, but the '02 team was actually significantly better than that '03 team imo.  The '03 team may have won the Dr. Pepper, but that '02 team was special.

Yeah that's pretty much it. Kicking issues hasn't reared its head yet though, I think more of the issue was that I'm not sure a young Ell was trusted to execute that play. We were still on our side of the 50 so that needed to be about a 20 yard play.
