Family of 5, ranging from late 20s into our 60s will be in town for the Auburn game. I don't know anything about Manhattan, so what should we visitors expect on a Thursday night? Where to park? Where to eat? Where to tailgate? What else should we know?
Looking forward to the game, War Eagle.
-
As far as fine dining goes, head to Kite's in Aggieville and get the burger. It was rated best sports bar in America. You can park and tailgate right next to the stadium. Plenty of parking all over.
-
Probably the coolest bar in all of manhattan sits under ground. You have to talk to a cop to be able to get in. It's like a legendary cave. Auntie Maes is what it's called. Plenty of room and good ppl down there. Grab a Tarantuala.
-
head to aggie station if you're into pickled eggs and busch light
-
You can park at BSFS. Tailgate their as well.
What are you guys looking to do? Party hardy? Or keep it family oriented?
-
Manhattan, Kansas is the greatest sport rough ridin' town in America. Get involved
-
adult family-oriented. we can grab a few beers, but probably don't want to funnel beers with the co-eds.
-
Since the game is on a school night, I would expect a pretty light crowd. Like the previous poster said, parking and picking a seat in the stadium should be fairly easy. Go to Aggieville for food.
Good luck and welcome to the board. I hope your tigers can bounce back from the loss to Georgia last weekend (just not against us ;)). Cheers!
-
Obviously a burger from Kites.
$0.25 draws at Aggie Station on game days.
-

:Lolrun:
-
go ahead and get to Kites as early as possible, I believe they open at 11 am. the place will be packed and you dont want to be waiting for an hour, even though the burger is totally worth it.
-
Eat in Aggieville, I recommend So Long. Grab beers in Aggieville. Stay away from Kites.
Great comeback against Wisconsin. I was thoroughly impressed by the Bayou Bengals.
-
After the game, head to Bobby T's. That's where the townies go. Then load up the car and hit Aggieville. Start at the Aggie Lounge and order the house special (Busch Light can). Hit as many bars as you can, but go to Bushwackers (not sure if it is still open) last. That's where all of the Ft. Riley soldiers hang out. Be sure to thank them for their service.

It can be tough to tell if I'm being trolled, if part of the post is a troll, or if you just made an honest mistake confusing Clemson with Auburn. In any event... picking a seat in the stadium should be easy? Is the stadium general admission? That seems strange, but I don't have my tickets in hand just yet so I can't be sure.

Excellent questions, sorry about the confusion. No I was just saying that with class the next day there will be a bunch of open seats, so if you say, buy upper deck tickets, you can probably walk down to the lower level and sit somewhere else during the game that has a better view.
-
You definitely want to make the trek over to the SW corner of the stadium about 60 minutes before the game. There is a statue there of Ernie Barrett, Mr. K-State. We have a little tradition of welcoming visiting fans there with some of our fellow bloggers. #dojo
-
And my apologies about the Georgia game, sometimes I get my Tigers mixed up. I see you guys actually beat the Pig Aggies in week 1 by a narrow margin, congrats!
-
do you know where the ernie barrett statue is?
-
Do you like squirrel? I hear it is a popular dish in the South. Anyway, we have a lot of fat, stupid squirrels on our campus so should be some good pre-game eats. Feel free to "take some for the road."
-
day of game - walk around aggieville and find a place to eat
pregame - walk around the stadium and check out the moat we had installed this year
-
Don't forget to pick up a few ROLL SNYD t shirts to remember your trip
-
Yes. Roll Damn Snyd!
-
You're gonna love the sight of our War Pigeons that fly around after every Cat score
-
You see we have this tradition during our pregame of the players running up a genuine Flint Hill right north of our stadium and touching a limestone postrock. Be sure to get their early to check out this long-standing tradition!

war eagle? you must be an oregon fan! we owe you from the orange bowl!
KITES BURGER!
does playing the oregon wildcats hurt the image of our program!

Welcome to big-time college football, buddy.
-
sak! WAR DAMN EAGLE!
This place is the nest! I've found KSU fans, on this board at least, to be very reasonable and honed in on the opinions/facts that power college football. It's like a little Toomer's Drugs* in the Midwest, in the internet, in your dome.
They really love their wizardly college football coach, whom they like to refer to in a variety of acronyms and celebrate the fact that they haven't lost a football game since 1893.
*And by Toomer's Drugs, I really mean The Supper Club or, if you're old enough to remember, Harry's on Opelika Road.
-
If you can only go one place, make it in the back.

-
Didn't you guys have your hands full with Coal Aggie this weekend?
-
do you know where the ernie barrett statue is?
:surprised:
-
Remember when Oklahoma kicked your ass in the Sugar bowl last year?
It's going to be like that
-
do you know where the ernie barrett statue is?
:surprised:
:peek:
-
You'll also want to take the time to see all the beautiful Oak trees we have on campus and around town
-
Get donuts at varsity donuts and then go get a Nancy at so long in the morning.
-
Make sure you head to the student union and get 10 frames in at some point.
-
you'll stay the eff away from my donuts, if you know what's good for you.
-
Friday morning, you are going to want to head out to Tuttle Creek Lake for a little boating. Make sure you bring enough booze.
-
make sure and hit up zar bar
-
i started to break manhattan down for this guy and then realized that i only had three uninterrupted hours before i had to leave work and that it wouldn't be enough time. wow what i town we all live in.
-
You guys are going to want to get to the tailgate early. That way you can wander around and try to find the Gronkowski family tailgate.
-
If you enjoy laughing at little people and death by heatstroke, I would definitely recommend the Tailgate Terracetm at the stadium
-
Bring your golf clubs and get 18 holes in at Colbert Hills on Saturday. It's a world class golf course.
-
also bring your futbol and get in 18 holes of futgolf at wildcat creek.
finest futgolf in the midwest, IMO
-
you could also check out MHK's premier indoor hot tub at ale house
-
also you may have heard that MHK is the best place to retire in the world, so it would be smart to drop those 60 somethings off at Meadowlark Hills on your way out of town.
-
Be sure to stop by Call Hall on campus and get some ice cream. It's damned good stuff.
-
if you see an older man with a foam finger come up to your tailgate and take your food, get really mad at him
-
if you see an older man with a foam finger come up to your tailgate and take your food, get really mad at him
He will try to make demands about what food you give him and how it is cooked, but tell him beggars can't be choosers.
-
offer him a dry bagel if he gets too annoying
-
if you are up for pizza doughboys has pretty good stuff, pepperoni rolls are money also
-

Didn't have time to read the first 3 pages of the thread, so I don't know if anybody has mentioned the burger at Kite's yet or not... But, I saw WackyCat and his crew all enjoying them this past weekend and they couldn't have been more pleased.

Confirmed! :lick:
-
offer him a dry bagel if he gets too annoying
Tell him only a Jayhawk would refuse a dry bagel.
-
Manhattan is a lot like Alabama, minus all the racism and illiteracy and smelly toothless people and poverty.
-
I can't believe no one has mentioned johnny kaws yet, our visitor should go there to join other racist types
-
Since you'll be in the area, I'd take your family to historic downtown Ogden. They'll love it!

Oz museum in wamego after
-
I'm so sick of people suggesting people from out of town go to call hall for ice cream as like one of the first things they should do in town. Its rough ridin' ice cream. It's not that big a deal.
-
Also, an OZ themed winery in Wamego. Drop by and taste some of the wines. Forewarning: Midwesterners love sweet wines, so you'll find a lot of THAT. :Yuck:
-
stop by wamego friendship house for the best bierocks this side of the nebraska border!
-
One thing about Manhattan: Its great and you will love it and probably never want to leave
-
I'm not sure this character was ever even interested in the lowdown after all :blank:

I had a very hard time not freaking out on him, and whomever invited him into our tailgate, last year at that one batcats' game.
-

Probably just keeping his excitement about the lowdown on the downlow.
:dunno:

He walked straight up to the grill and started rummaging through the food that my roommate and I had cooked. I don't like that most of his unacceptable behavior is condoned just because it's him carrying out the action. Mental health problems or not, the way he conducts himself at K-State sporting events shouldn't be tolerated.
-
i wish that he would cover his nipples with his suspender straps
-
i wish that he would cover his nipples with his suspender straps
Why don't you reenact that scene from Notorious with him. You can be Biggie. Robert will play Lil' Kim.
-
If you do get a craving for squirrel or possum remember folks in Kansas don't eat them.
-
Make sure you take the walk from Higginbotham gate, through the Marina Kistler Beach Musuem of Art arched walk way, up past Danforth Chapel, past McCain Auditorium and the War Memorial (not for dead eagles BTW) and then to historic Anderson Hall (with new renovated restrooms and time capsule under construction).
Most beautiful campus walk ever, anywhere . . . no dying trees with toilet paper all over the place either.

It's like Dax has the route I took home from Aggieville while blacked out last year memorized.
-
Do you lift bro? Hit the CEP rec. it's one of the best gyms in America.
-
Robert got super pissed at our baseball tailgate back in the day. We forgot to get him his diet caffeine free pop. :Ugh: Maybe stop mooching off college kids, butt head! :shakesfist:
-
how long do you think a hotdog stays good for in your pocket?

It's the best ice cream and it is a super big deal.
-
how long do you think a hotdog stays good for in your pocket?
August tailgate or December tailgate?
It probably functions a lot like a QT roller grill in August.
-
Have I told you how annoying it is when a thread turns into a Robert thread? We've all encountered the dude, stop it.
That being said, being from the south you haven't much exposure to outdoor beauty. Go to Pillsbury crossing, it would instantly be the most beautiful place in the entire state of Alabama if it were moved there.
-
Pizza Ranch out by Menard's, but make sure you get there early to avoid long waits.
-

I did not know there was a Pizza Ranch in Manhattan. :excited:

To be fair, he is the most "alabama thing" we have to offer and an encounter with him should make our SEC-SEC-SEC fan friends feel right at home.
-
I would for sure make a trip out to the Prairie band casino, just 20 minutes north of Topeka
-
Adult entertainment? Trot on over to Junction City. It's like Manhattan's evil twin (if the twin is half the size and covered with warts). More or less the Mobile of the Midwest.
-
I really hope this guy is able to decipher the good advice from the bad. There are some real top shelf tips in here.
Gonna win 'em all!
-
I often times forget how good we have it. This Sak person is going to be absolutely pissed he/she didn't raise his/her family here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc7AMJAAcL0

First page of the meat goat thread:
it's like the ku track...we will always have this
:Wha:

Sak. It's up to you to know what to believe, but there is a lot of solid advice in here mixed with a spattering of misinformation.
Hope you and yours enjoy your trip to Manhattan. Roll Snyd!
-
Well I would recommend he check out C-Hall, but now that suggesto means nothing. :frown:
-
Learn about our great flint hills and the amazing history of our agriculture at the best rough ridin' museum about agriculture in the world.
-
if you're looking for a place to spend the night and the hotels are full, worry not - just mosey on down to the chick fil a and pitch a tent with some of MHK's finest hayseeds
-
Check out toomers tree removal while you're in town.
-
if you want a taste of some authentic kansas city barbeque, take a stroll downtown and head into karnivore. get there early to avoid the lines tho
-
surprised nobody said bourbon and baker yetreal talk
-
The mexican food/seafood trailer (used to be the catfish trailer) on Tuttle Creek Blvd. is also a don't miss stop. Worth a pic, too.
-
I stayed at Americas best resort this past weekend off Tuttle. The service was amazing!
-
Trolling visiting posters is so edgy, good job guys. Thank god we don't have the same thread like 49,163 times on this board. Kites Burger :excited: top shelf message boarding
-
does everything need to be edgy, ok_cat?
-
does everything need to be edgy, ok_cat?
I'd settle for not completely played out.
-
maybe you could add something other than negative criticism, at least i have a dumb post when i bring the hammer out
-
I lived in Auburn for a while so if you need some tips on Manhattan just ask me. If you liked Harry's then you should go to Aggie Lounge. See I can help give analogs like that all day...
-
surprised nobody said bourbon and baker yetreal talk
Love that place.. Haven't been there on a game day yet, is it packed like everywhere else?
-
Here's purplehaze's quick and dirty on my baller hometown:
Poyntz has the nicest collection of resteraunts:
-Harry's (classic americano)
-4 Olive's (wine / fine dining)
-Bourbon & Baker (whiskey / great food / bakery)
-Dela Voce (italian / cocktails)
-Hibachi Hut (cajun)
Aggieville has the bars
-Auntie Mae's (parlor, basement bar, strong drinks, good vibes)
-Aggie Station (best food in the ville imo)
-So Long Saloon (best burgers, black bean dip)
-Taco Lucha (margs / tacos) (get the pineapple beer aka a "nancy" at lucha or so long)
-Rock-a-belly (sandwiches, good tap, summer beers)
-Keltic Star (guiness, cider, fish n chips)
-Aggie Lounge (dive bar, busch light, pickled eggs)
-Kites, Rusty's, Tanner's, Johnny Kaws, Tubby's, are all sports bars and I don't really think they have much that separates them.
-Radina's and Bluestem are great coffee shops
Bottom line is that Aggieville is your game-day headquarters before heading to the game. It's a long walk from the stadium, but a beautiful walk through campus if you're up to it. There are also shuttles that go from Aggieville to the game and back, but they don't start until 2 hr before kickoff I believe.
Other MHK places:
-Discovery Center (natural history museum about surrounding area)
-Tuttle Creek (large lake out of town)
-Sunset Zoo (newly upgraded, very nice zoo)
-Colbert Hills (pro level public golf course)
-Konza Prairie (largest un-plowed tallgrass prairie in the world... beautiful)
-Tallgrass Brewery (awesome craft brewery, check for tours)
:gocho:

great job, purplehaze

ya, fixed

Great job, ph. Although you may have oversold Kites/Tubbys/Kaws/etc.

Great job, but I think we all know the burger is what separates Kite's from the rest.

to those of you giving good advice... thank you very much.
to those of you trolling visitors like myself, do you realize how stupid it is to try and have visitors who are patronizing your local merchants leave with a negative impression of your town and its fans?

Agreed, would really like the town businesses to get repeat visits from Auburn fans.

What if he/she goes back to Auburn and disses our town to a couple of his/her buddies? :ohno: :runaway: :ohno: (ftp://:ohno: :runaway: :ohno:)

I like being nice to visiting fans. :dunno:

sak, just so you are aware, this guy Spracne is actually a Jayhawk (not kidding). I just don't want you think yet another Wildcat fan was giving you grief.

Agreed, would really like the town businesses to get repeat visits from Auburn fans.

Here's the thing sak, when i went down to Auburn for our game several years ago, I had a pretty awful experience. A grown man dumped a beer all over my kid's head on purpose, then laughed about it. Another guy spit his tabacco spit on my shoe in the stadium then tried to fight me. Some college punk stole my mask, and ran off with it. I'd put Auburn fans up there with the likes of Raiders fans and Nebraska fans in the classless department.
-
i had a similar experience to yours meow meow at the game @ auburn. some older guy whistled at my wife and yelled something like "you should walk that sweet ass over here girl", i would have yelled something awful back at him but our 2 girls were with us. when we got into the stadium some college guys were really drunk and kept asking how we could let that "boy" be our coach. i was just appalled at the whole experience and i felt so bad for our girls and my wife for having to go through the whole thing.
-
When did this become a Nebraska fan post road loss circa 1998 and beyond forum?

If I saw a father wearing a mask I'd think he was a dork too.

what?!? I haven't been to Ogden in years. Last time I was there it was to blast some rounds at the shooting range with my pops. Have they legitimately fixed up a river front area?

This bama peckerwood wants "adult entertainment." Bubba, you need to slide by Junction City, it's kind of Manhattan's evil twin, if a twin is half the size and covered with warts.

Ogden vs. Edwardsville for Kansas trailer court supremacy. Who you got?

Ogden vs. Edwardsville for Kansas trailer court supremacy. Who you got?
Tough call. Ogden was truly the King of Courts until the '93 Flood. Probably 75% courts then, but the flood washed out probably 1/3 of them. Maybe more.
-
Ogden vs. Edwardsville for Kansas trailer court supremacy. Who you got?
Dodge City and every city in SEKS want in on that action.
-
The baseline for consideration would be 75 percent trailer court housing. I actually think Ogden's higher than that, unless someone has thrown up a bunch of cheap off-base housing in the past five years. I don't know I there is a housing alternative in Edwardsville.

An outfit called RIM Development went into Ogden several years ago and built a ton of apartments by the riverfront.

:gocho:
Sak, as a 60-ish parent, season-ticket holder and a local resident of over 20 years, I vote for Purple Haze's list. I think Auntie Mae's may not be to the taste of everyone in your family. For an Aggieville eatery, I would go with So Long Saloon. So Long has excellent variety in the menu; the burgers are excellent and the black bean/raspberry dip is heavenly and worth a trip. The drawback to So Long is that it is fairly small, so hitting it at peak meal times makes it tough to get a seat. Get there early! It can also be noisy, but that is par for the course for almost anywhere in Aggieville. Radina's and Bluestem are great coffee/sandwich shops that will give a non-bar environment. Keltic Star is very nice, quieter than most, and has an authentic Irish menu. Variety Donuts has a vintage environment, great donuts, and local personality. Harry's (downtown on Poyntz--http://www.harrysmanhattan.com/ (http://www.harrysmanhattan.com/) ) is a lovely restaurant for an authentic local meal if you will be here before or after game day.
Call Hall ice cream is awesome. If you visit the Dairy Bar in Call Hall http://www.asi.k-state.edu/services-and-sales/call-hall-dairy-bar.html (http://www.asi.k-state.edu/services-and-sales/call-hall-dairy-bar.html), you'll find sandwiches, ice cream, and other products produced at the university. The Student Union has a bowling alley that is fun for a family activity.
Personally, I would avoid Bushwacker's, Aggie Lounge and Bobby T's. I think they are more the 18-22 year old crowd. Doughboys Pizza is out of business, so you can't eat there! I loved their pizza, but they are no longer open.
Radina's has a new Bakeshop at 3rd and Ft. Riley Blvd that is getting rave reviews. The Chef Cafe on 4th between Poyntz and Houston St. is extremely popular for breakfast and lunch. I wouldn't go to Pizza Ranch for this trip; it is OK, but nothing to write home about and definitely not a uniquely Manhattan experience. Freddy's Frozen Custar d & Cox Brothers BBQ (both on McCall Road) and Vista Burger (Tuttle Creek Blvd) all have good food. Freddy's has hamburgers & hot dogs as well as the rich ice cream.
I don't think there will be many empty seats in the stadium. Even though it is a Thursday night and very inconvenient for out of town season ticket holders, there will be people in all the seats and the environment will be electric. Welcome to Manhattan and to K-State; I hope you and your family have an excellent visit to the Little Apple!

I may need to stand corrected on Auntie Mae's. I haven't been there in forever. I also didn't think about Bushwacker's being closed; is the building completely closed or has it reemerged as yet another name? It has been off of my radar a long time. All I could remember was the rowdy reputation that it had gained through the years.

I'm not surprised at the inspiring name change. It's always been a dump and works hard to maintain the stabby reputation.

The Thursday game works out better for me, I'm taking off Thursday, Friday, and Monday
Perfect plan. I'm doing the same...although I live in MHK. :)

Great bbs'n sue, I also miss doughboys, was a tasty authentic pie
-
man. sue just burned the ever loving heck out of haze for not including the chef. absolute best in the business for breakfast/brunch and it's downtown!
sue- why don't you think auntie mae's would be liked by his/her family? there isn't a more relaxed/family friendly bar in town.
This is totally true. Tons of parents come in with their kids before the games. The parents get Bloody Marys and the kids get Shirley Temples. Everyone leaves happy and ready to cheer on our Kansas State WILDCATS!!!
-
Memo to Sunflowersue, Coco-Bolo's is also a very family friendly Manhattan establishment.
The parents can have margaritas and Tijuana Trainwrecks while the kids can have chocolate milks and cheese quesadillas.

Does nobody know that Bushwackers has been gone for over a year?
I don't think anyone cares about that shithole

i have a funny story about that dump. i guess some new people bought the building across the little parking lot from them, painted it purple and are planning to do a similar concept. oh and they also found out that the entire space between them and bushwackers/dirty dogs including the dirty dog patio actually belongs to them.

Fast Eddie's went out of business?

will anybody loan me the money to level both of those places and put up one nice emaw bar that could utilize the parking lot for outdoor concerts?

What is the business plan? How much do you need? I think this was brought up a couple of years ago, but nothing ever became of it. I also need to see that the mods are fully on board and invested in this. It would never take off if the mods didn't have some skin in the game.

That is pretty interesting. I say they do a death match for the rights to the patio.

A good friend and former poster on this board almost bought Bushwhackers after it went out of business when Ft Riley blacklisted it a couple years ago.

to those of you giving good advice... thank you very much.
to those of you trolling visitors like myself, do you realize how stupid it is to try and have visitors who are patronizing your local merchants leave with a negative impression of your town and its fans?
Are you gonna give us a bad Yelp review or something?
-
eff like three people made the yelp comment already.

A word of advice for our visitors: Manhattan KS has a law that any drivers talking on a cell phone must be using a hands free device. Getting caught and cited for that phone up to your ear can cost you $150.00 or more. Like many other states, texting while driving is illegal state-wide.
There are signs about the hands-free law within the city limits, but they are small, not real numerous, and easily missed.
:Wha:

All of the visitors should be sure to show up to the stadium early. It's Harley Day. This is an event we have once per year where some of the big money boosters get to ride their hog around the stadium in a parade before kickoff.
