Title: 4th of July - Eating and Drinking
Post by: Kermit on July 02, 2014, 02:05:51 PM
It's that time of the year again.  Most people will be at a bbq or pool party.  What types of food/drink are you bringing and/or most looking forward to?

For me, I'm making pasta salad and probably some type of summer cocktail.   :driving:

Mountain Dew and Mad Dog 20/20(kiwi lime) is a pretty great place to start.

If you don't dig bum wine, maybe try a Vodka/club soda with a lime.  It's pretty great.  two thirds water, basically. Hydrate and get smashed all at the same time with very low cals.

Any way to dress it up besides the lima?  Umbrella?  Some mint, mayhaps?  Is a smoky glass tumbler appropriate here?

Extra shot of vodka works well, or maybe add some Pimms No.1, which is also known to be delish.

Also, Pimms Cup is super good(but not very alchololy ).  Pimms No.1, cucumber slices, lime, lemon, ginger ale.

Beyond that, take it to the Dark and Stormy thread.

A LOT of you are going to get yourselves hurt if you take on too much on the Fourth.

You are going to want to go out on your decks TONIGHT and grill some burgers and hot dogs, and get your timings/heat down before Friday.  While you are doing that, and this is absolutely key, you should be rough ridin' POUNDING cheap domestic beer.  I mean it.  You should be a solid 5 before the food even gets off the grill.  A ton of guys fail to do this, and then on Friday, under game day tempo, their bodies do not know how to react.  Happens all the time.

Pros (your Clams, your Limestones) will work on their system repeatedly throughout the early summer.  Clams has a 6 White Russian - 6 Deviled Egg cooking routine that is very repeatable and very effective.  Limestone, on the other hand may not be the gourmet that Clams is, but he will wreck a 12 pack just getting the god damn propane hooked up...

Is there a better 4th of July binge beer than Miller 64?  I would submit that there is not.  You can drink a whole 30 pack and never catch a full buzz.  Plus you can work off all of the calories consumed while binging by running to the pisser every 5 minutes.  Brilliant.

I am starting at 10 AM or so, maybe later if the charcoal gives me probs.  I am going to smoke all day long.  4 slabs, a brisket, two small pork butts, a big turkey (experimental), 20+ dry rubbed Italian sausages.

Deviled eggs, cucumber salad, corn, etc.

It's going to be really great.

Def doing a juiced up fruit melon.  Cut off top of watermelon and clean it out.  Melon ball 'melon, 'loupe, and honeydew.  Dump balls into cleaned out melon and mix in grapes and any other fruit you like.  Dump in your favorite vodka, cover with top of melon, and refridgerate overnight.  Break out and enjoy the next day

Oh make no mistake about it, I will be crushing plenty of brews in the next few days.      But it's going to be a long hot weekend so by Saturday evening I'll be ready to switch it up with something different.  Minty or citrusy cocktails go pretty well with hot weather and IMO Mint Juleps are underrated and should be enjoyed more than just once a year at Derby time.

1 ounce lime juice (fresh squeezed or I used juice from concentrate)

4 ounces Sprite (or 7-up...I used diet 7-up)

1/2 ounce cherry juice (from the jar of cherries or find it bottled in the mixed drink section at your grocery store)

 1 maraschino cherry

brother is grilling tri tip on friday, i'm smoking short ribs on saturday.  we will drink all  the beer in la cygne, ks.

Guys talk to me about summer cocktails.  Pretty big 'tail rook' over here.

in a blender put a can of either frozen lemonade or limade concentrate (go crazy and do both), add vodka, add ice, blend, pour in a glass or cup, binge

umm, is this where you are from bud?

nope, but that doesn't stop me from painting the town red on the 4th

like 2 years ago i had a pak for the ages in la cygne on the 4th of july  :sdeek:

if it was on a private lake southwest of town then i might have seen you.  if that was you, yeah, you were many shades of pak'd but the apology the next day wasn't necessary, we had fun watching your drunkery.

please tell me you were at tanglewood lake

 :sdeek:

  :surprised:

(j-dub was not there. but his brothers were, and they are effing nuts, was probably them )

seriously 'meister. hot toddy. lots of 'em.

do you have any bourbon? good.

do you have any teabags? green or herbal? good.

do you have any lime or lemon juice? good, but only optional if not.

do you have any honey? good.

now make some hot tea, put as much bourbon as you want in there, a few dashes of lemon/lime juice and a generous squeeze of honey and you are set. then do that again 3 or 4 times.

Yeah, but it works. Also you get used to it after a few uses. Also if the make the "K" sound while using it that helps the water not go down the back of your throat.

I feel better after every time I use one. Also, the water doesn't get in your ears.

I hope that since it's a holiday they treat it like a sunday and have some of the brunch stuff available.

Bloodfart, RSVP to me if you're coming and I'll bring your FattyFest stuff.  Also, introduce yourself to all of sd's non-gE companions as Bloodfart.

Whole lotta food being consumed that wasn't "Freedom_____" ITT. Really disappointed in the lot of ya.

dobber's pro tip: cater food from nice restaurant and pak with 50-60 great people. Drive to SC to buy the good fireworks so you can blow crap up for the guests.

(The dobber family 5 were guests.)

Gonna win 'em all!
