Title: Weezer Blue Album 20 yr anniversary (shameless grantland blog luke)
Post by: Kat Kid on May 09, 2014, 10:59:26 AM
What is your favorite Blue Album song?

Weezer "Holiday" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-xD_wSSJ8U)

I think mine is "Holiday."  Now hang with me.....I don't mean to say it is the best or that it should be considered "better" than others on the album.  It is simply the song that I think best summarizes Weezer and the album for me.  It is simultaneously naively hopeful and hopelessly romantic.  It is catchy but also has a number of unexpected turns for a pop song conjuring up hair metal, doo wop, rounding, angsty emo pop and some beatles esque harmonies.  It reeks of running out of school to a hot junky car with your buddies, rolling down the window, tossing your floppy hair out of your eyes and jamming the chucks to the floor and peeling out in reverse.

Make your case friends!

"Say it Ain't So" is probably my favorite, but "Undone (The Sweater Song)" is a very very close second. "Buddy Holly" is solid. Really, the whole album is solid as hell and very enjoyable.

Yeah Holiday is great.  Best first 7 seconds of any song.  I could listen to the first 7 seconds over and over again for maybe 3 minutes in a row.

"Undone" was the one that caught my attention, but "The world has turned" probably edges the rest out.  But it's so close to call probably the album that sparked my interest in music (that or Green Day's Dookie, same year) came out when i was in 6th grade

Oh man. I'm gonna live in this thread for the next few days.

KK. Don't you dare feel like you have to justify Holiday as your fave. Don't you dare. It's fantastic.

To me, a more interesting question to me is, "Which one do you skip over to get to all the other ones?" Actually it's not that interesting, because everybody's gonna say No One Else.

No, it means everyone says it's the most underrated song of all time and it's really not that good. It's a good song, no doubt, but it's about middle of the pack in comparison to the rest of the blue album.

They each have a part in the middle that goes sort of soft and slow and is different than the rest of the song and then it picks back up again!

Boom.

Quote
6. Brian Bell doesn’t actually play a note of guitar on the Blue Album.
Despite being credited as guitarist in the Blue Album’s liner notes, Bell’s only real contributions to the album were his re-recorded versions of Jason Cropper’s backing vocals. It was decided there wasn’t enough time for Bell to lay down guitar tracks, so as the legend goes, Cuomo flawlessly laid down all of Cropper’s parts in one all-day marathon session. Bell’s recorded debut with Weezer came on the single to “Undone” the following summer, as he played guitar on fan-favorite B-sides “Susanne” and “Mykel & Carli.”

(not actually trying to start a discussion on the fall of weezer. Just re-read the Grantland article and was lamenting.)

Ignoring this, to share a great Matt Sharp quote:

"The one thing that is really consistent with me being on the road is that people come up to me and say, 'By the way, the last two Weezer records really sucked,' and they're always saying it to get in good with me. And I haven't heard them. But if they were bad, they'd probably be just as bad if I was there."

TBT Memzy/Fanning brag: 6th-grade WSBs went to Streetside at 91st and Metcalf to get the Blue album as soon as he heard "Undone" on 105.9 the Lazer for the first time. They didn't have it, and staff hadn't heard of it, but they ordered it on cassette for me. Still have it.
