This looks like something I would sink way too much money into.  Maybe if I had a big house to put albums in and way too much money...

discogs is amazing. You can build up a nice collection of records that cost a buck or two without having to sift through musty bins of crap.

digging is one of the best parts of collecting. walking into a shop, not knowing what is there and discovering a gem is something that sticks in my memory for a long time. i can spend hours upon hours in a store and enjoy every second of it, especially if the place has a listening station set up.

Twist & Shout in Denver is great, ChiCat.

It can absolutely be a money pit, but if you take your time and build up incrementally you will have something you are extremely happy with in a few years. You can also look for record lots on craigslist and potentially buy a few hundred for well below what you will find in stores by people who are just looking to get rid of entire collections they no longer want/don't know what to do with.

btw, Crusty, what is your Discogs user name?

I generally dislike going into record stores because quite honestly I don't like being around most people that work and shop in record stores out here.  Also I don't want to spend hours in a store. I can spend 15 minutes on discogs and accomplish a lot more.

Hmmm, I am almost talked into it.  I think I am going to have to budget the crap out of myself though.

That's a great one. I've been craving rap, but most of what I want is pretty rare on vinyl.

I bought it for Humpty Dance as a kid, but the first 6 tracks or so are really solid

I have a Sansui FR-D35, a cheap preamp, and some M-Audio Studiophile AV 40's. Pretty simple and cheap, but sounds good enough. I never listen to vinyl on headphones - I'd prefer to listen to digital on headphones because I can move around.

For turntable shopping (if you don't have one), I'd recommend craigslist instead of something new. Just set a price limit and search. Then, look up the model here:

http://www.vinylengine.com

for opinions on the turntable, manuals, setup tips, etc. It really makes it pretty easy.

to a Denon AV amp (pretty meh, but it has worked well for several years)

to two Klipsch RF-3's

and when I listen on headphones I use a pair of these

Grado 225i
(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fecx.images-amazon.com%2Fimages%2FI%2F61AtBP75uYL._SL1500_.jpg&hash=c5b5252a8835b0e8251a755f643475e8cb02e373)

Have been wanting to get a designated stereo set up for a while, but what I have has worked well.

how do you guys listen to your records? olde timey stereo cabinets? polyphonic high fidelity stereo-phones?

(maybe this is new thread worthy)

I have a Sansui FR-D35, a cheap preamp, and some M-Audio Studiophile AV 40's. Pretty simple and cheap, but sounds good enough. I never listen to vinyl on headphones - I'd prefer to listen to digital on headphones because I can move around.

For turntable shopping (if you don't have one), I'd recommend craigslist instead of something new. Just set a price limit and search. Then, look up the model here:

http://www.vinylengine.com

for opinions on the turntable, manuals, setup tips, etc. It really makes it pretty easy.

i'd also recommend estate sales, you can run into some real incredible stuff sometimes being sold by family members who have no idea what they are selling.

i always stay away from these things. one thing fails, and you have a giant piece of trash. the sound quality is usually awful as well, but to each his own.

Wantlist is worth doing.  When you find a record you want, it will tell you how many other records you want that the seller has.

My dad has like a hundred French pop records from the 60s and 70s

This sounds amazing. Does he have any interest in selling them?

Probably never considered it. Mild level sentimental type hoarder.

Lots of Françoise Hardy

That takes me through about half the electronic/ambient section. Will add more later. Also have a bunch of house singles I didn't really care to put up, but may go through them for the fun of it.

Brian Eno is a personal fav/hero. Ambient 2 w/ him and Harold Budd is incredible.

n/m, skeletons of steel,  timber and blackened granite is clearly the best

Quote
Obliteration...
Blue-white lightning,
Surging through in a blinding flash...

Smooth as glass,
Fierce as fire,
Unbent like marble,
Unbroken like steel.

Spider ships and shark fighters
From a rogue galaxy,
The armies of doom,
Robo-terydactyl attack,
Orchestrated but chaotic laser blitz,
Resulting in total submission.

Frail human command,
Eroded by miscommunications and greed,
Enables infiltration and destruction...

Earthly armaments,
A fool's paradise...
Prepare for insurrection!

Vibrant cones of blinding light,
Blistering winds and toxic plumes,
Twisted iron and melted steel,
Burning wood and poison fumes...

Unrelenting barrage,
Insectozoid carnage,
MULTI-DIMENSIONAL COMIC ATTACK!!!

Scattered and fleeing in all directions,
Frozen in time,
The faces of war.
Total desperation,
The unilateral fate is clear,
Rubble and wreckage,
Cages of stone,
Obliterated landscape,
Paths strewn with bones,
Futile existence,
Aimless trail of death ahead,
Once bright futures now replaces with impending dread...

Gigan is just trying to be like Demilich:

"The Sixteenth Six-Tooth Son of Fourteen Four-Regional Dimensions (Still Unnamed)"
"Inherited Bowel Levitation - Reduced Without Any Effort"
"The Planet That Once Used to Absorb Flesh in Order to Achieve Divinity and Immortality (Suffocated to the Flesh That It Desired...)"
