-Start with Foster and oscar Weber's recruiting. How has it been watching Foster develop? Have enjoyed watching him develop under Weber. From the very first practice, he's always looking to shoot. Had a motor to score. He's always the first to shoot in a scrimmage, practice, game, whatever the case. Weber has had to coach him up to score in the system and to round out the rest of his game.
-Jevon? Why so limited lately? Problem is he was just playing on energy. Nothing else. Can't run on energy alone at this level. Knows probably 40% of system. Just hit that wall (sorry pissclams).
-Monday, for example, that pick and roll that worked so well is probably the 5th option within the motion offense......there's no way JT knows how to get that far withing the offense.
-Baylor twice down the stretch. Have talent. How do they match up? Very well. Look at what Baylor does extremely well....the three ball. Against KU for example, hit three ball and stayed in game until KU locked it down. K-state one of best in nation defending the three.....close out extremely well. That said, Baylor has the athleticism and sense of urgency that is scary. Plus, K-State has not won on the road.....but has played very close against some very good home teams.
-If K-State takes their recent performance on the road.....K-State will be fine. If K-State truly does struggle on the road, will be in trouble.
-
thanks as always, steve

Pretty good points about Jevon. I'm sure once coaches were able to watch a few games of him on tape they were able to take away everything he is able to do at this point.
-

this is more than a recap, it's a recap in 3D

do people just say this after they look at our numbers and assume this must be the case? i don't feel like we do this exceptionally well :dunno:

I don't even know what closing out is :raccoon:

We do a good job of pressuring all passes. They catch and we're right there. Also it's nice to have longer guards for the kick outs.

We switch a lot too. That helps as long as everyone else rotates, which we are also pretty good at.
-
Perimeter pressure is a huge key to oscar's defense. The pressure and switches on the perimeter help with slowing down shooters, but more importantly they help our interior defense because teams have a hard time entering the ball into the paint. This is one of the main things that allows us to play the double swing smaller line-up and get away with it defensively. Hopefully we'll continue to pick up forcing TOs because that is a big part of oscar's system, but we've been a bit sporatic at that this season.

Great post. I've been impressed with how quickly we get out on shooters, especially when the ball goes quickly around the arc.

I feel like our motion offense has the d moving alot and it slows down the opposition when they are on offense. They don't have as much pep. Does anyone else think this?

It's smokey as hell in here, because so many people are flooring their HBBIQ machines.
Great work everyone!

This too. If a guy like Heslip has to chase someone like Sprads around for 25-30 seconds on D, fatigue can set in on O.

it was so finely crafted i didn't even catch it.

On a more serious note, why the eff is pick and roll our fifth option in the offense?

it's true, pete. ku fans know a crap ton more about hoops than cat fans do so science

Our defensive statistics wildly overrate what is a good, not great, defensive squad.
I miss Jevon. Hit the books man!

Stan did say "is probably" and the truth is Stan has no idea what option the pick and roll is on the offense. Also, the pick and roll is something oscar didn't use much last year, so I'm sure its still a work in progress at this point as the guys get it figured out (DJamer and Will were great at it and I hope we see it more).

I know, just making conversation.
-
But it is kind of hilarious to think Jevon isn't playing because he hasn't figured out the pick and roll yet.

Not exactly what Stan said. He said that Jevon is behind on knowledge and implementation of the system because of his time not practicing. Said that this is the time when teams are getting very good at running their systems and scouting others. Stan said that Texas, for example, knew what to do against 5 different options that our offense can run through but Jevon doesn't know anything past the first or second options because he hasn't caught up on it yet.
Seems dumb to me. I mean, he basically sounded like he was saying we are writing off Jevon this year because there isn't any way he could catch up to the level of offensive understanding the rest of the team has without him.

I feel like, if Jevon is not in oscar's doghouse, and has just been limited in playing time in some of the more high profile games against the better coached teams, then he should see more playing time down the stretch. This includes games agains Baylor (2), TCU, and OSU who are at or near the bottom, in my opinion, of not just the league standings but in terms of coaching and scouting.
-
Very excited for the game tomorrow. Thanks for the recap, SD.

I think its a bit too much to say he's been written off, but clearly there were problems the last 4 games he played a lot of minutes. The problem is 3 of those were on the road, so it could be said too much of the problems were put on him. However, K-State still averaged a very poor 1.01 ppp from the UT game through the WVU game and I'm sure part of that was due to some of the limitations in our offense with Jevon on the floor. He played 50% of the available minutes in those games while shooting 4-17 from the floor and 5-14 on FTs. He still had 14 assists to only 5 TOs in that stretch, but I think the overall lack of production made it hard to keep him on the floor, especially if the staff really believes we are more limited with our offense when he plays. Hopefully having another long week of practice will help get him back into the rotation a little bit more, though Nigel gave us some nice minutes against KU.

I'm commenting more on the fact that we have a conservative defensive approach, which over a season is good for the numbers, but, IMO, overrates the effectiveness of our defense in actually winning games. All of that being said, this is an approach that can work, as we've seen. I just think we're not a great defensive team, even though our stats suggest it.

Its the best eFG% defense in the league and 2nd best defensive efficiency in a league with really good offense. I don't think you can play conservative (I don't think our ball pressure is conservative at all) on defense and put up those kind of numbers. You either make it tough for people to score or you don't and we flat out make it tough for teams to score.
Now, I want to continue to see our perimeter pressure force more TOs because I think that's an important part of what we do (or it should be), but overall its hard for me to argue against the quality of our defense.

So much HBBIQ in this thread my head is spinning. Sure hope we "close out" good, and "box out", so we can get some "boards". (Is that the correct term?). Then maybe just run rolls and picks until time runs out.

Oh man, boom goes the dynamite. or, what are the kids now saying on goEMAW? get cleveland a body bag, or something?
Up next, Cleveland debates the existence of black holes with Stephen Hawking.

I will concede this; it could be Cleveland is indirectly trying to reference the fact that our defense isn't good enough on the road (and in Big 12 play it hasn't been; 1.08 ppp allowed), but that still doesn't make our overall body of work average (or below average). JMHO.

I've contended throughout that we are a good defensive team, not great. Which to me says we are above average. That being said fan brings up 2 good points. We don't play defense that well on the road and great defense travels. Secondly our guards, save for Jevon, appear incapable of forcing perimeter turnovers. Great defenses do this. The quality of our defense is good but there is no way in hell we're the best defense in the league as quantitative evidence suggests.

all that matters is scoring points and preventing points from being scored. How you get to there is irrelevant.

Ultimately yes, but we can agree that making qualitative statements about defense requires more than simply looking at defensive ppg.
And why else do we spend time on here than to have long winded debates or to trash beems?

you're absolutely right, you should be looking at PPP instead. (We're very good at defensive PPP)

I will say this, we do force tough shots. That is one thing we do very well. I credit oscar for that.

We actually slipped to 3rd in defensive efficency, but UT, KU, and us are clearly the best 3 defenses in the league.
The real problem with the team this season is offense. Our efficiency is 9th.

KU and UT are a cut above us because they have people that can defend the rim.
We left our defense at home again. OU annihilating us.

Stan said that we match up as well with ISU as with anyone. He said that they are the same size as us and don't have a strong over powerful post presence and that we should be able to take more of an advantage of that than them. Basically said the obvious, guard the perimeter well and we should be fine. Was pretty meh.
I mean, the whole guard the perimeter well and you will be fine thing is the same for any team playing ISu.

I don't know why people as smart as Stan Weber act like ISU basically sits around the perimeter and waits to chuck threes. The reason they are so dangerous from outside is because they have guys who can take it to the rack, and then the other team has to help on defense, all of the sudden some guy is wide open from three. If you want to beat ISU, then you need to stop them off the dribble.
