Richard Sherman. What a role model for today's Taliban youth.

never heard of richard sherman, so i'm siding with crabby on this one.
-
Richard Sherman is an absolute rough ridin' stud and I hope more people use postGAME interviews to talk trash.

yeah that was pretty great

I don't see what the problem is here. I guess the simpletons think NFL players don't jaw at each other all game long?

Nub fans should be happy.... This will take the heat off of them

This is the same guy that openly claimed he was a better corner than Darrelle Revis right?
What a stupid rough ridin' idiot.
-
Sherman was selected in the 5th round by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2011 NFL Draft. Sherman remembers watching the draft with his family at home and being "livid" about players who he perceived as inferior getting drafted before him.

Sherman had a 4.2 GPA in high school and got into Stanford with a 1400 on his SAT. Then he graduated early.
-
they're out in full force at work. fantastic day for it, too :rflush:

i would love to have Richard Sherman on my football team

You have to admit that Sherman is a total heel. I mean, I love him, but he's deliberately inciting rage on the part of opposing players, fans, etc.

How great would it be if the world separated everything by whether you hate Sherman or not?
Assigning seats at a Cats game - Sherman'rs sit one side of the stadium/arena, anti-Sherman'rs on the other. Bars could be Sherman bars or anti-Sherman bars.
What couldn't go better if people were separated based on their take on Richard Sherman?

"Alright guys, let's go play the game where the biggest strongest fastest people on the planet all smash into eachother, but just remember, don't be too pumped up in your postgame interview 30 seconds after the game ends, or you will completely terrify white america, K?"
-
When you have the context that literally seconds before Sherman tried to shake Crabtree's hand and that he was mushed, on top of making the game winning play against him in the endzone, the response was completely understandable. Football's way too emotional of a game for a guy to come down that quickly for an interview and I can't blame him at all for being excited.

He was trying to get a rise out of Crabtree on that. Ran out of nowhere and smacked him on the ass and went for the shake more taunting like than anything.
If it weren't for the interview, we would be talking about how stud of a taunt it was.

To expect to shake hands after you just beat him to end his season is pretty ridiculous. Seems like the hand shake is more a reference to whatever happened in Arizona between the two.

I always shook my opponent's hand after matches. Only time I ever didn't shake the opposing coaches' hands after a match was when I lost at State senior year. Mother rough rider stalled the whole match, should have been DQ'd. Only had it called twice on him. :curse:

They don't in football. Also, people in soccer probably wouldn't do it if the other team scored the winning goal with 22 seconds left.

I didn't care for the yelling and screaming and such. I prefer cool characters who are like "nbd I'm awesome" over super intense screamers. But to each his own.

Many many times I've seen opponents greet each other after a game with handshakes, hugs, whatever. Hell, the coaches shaking hands at midfield is a football institution. Boxers, UFC fighters, and other opponents in violent sports do it, too. What's wrong with wanting good sportsmanship?

I don't think for a second it was good sportsmanship. It wasn't when the game was actually over either. If a guy in soccer just beat the goalkeeper with the game winner and then immediately walked up to shake hands with the goal keeper, it wouldn't happen.
I like that Sherman did it, but it was an attempt to show up Crabtree. Had nothing to do with sportsmanship.

I'm not sure what happened or what was said between those two specifically, I'm just saying that even in football it's okay to want or even expect good sportsmanship. I'm sure what I saw on Sunday was not it.

can anyone show me when a white guy (or hell, even another black guy) reacted this way in a postgame interview? maybe the reaction is because of jackassery, not because of race.

coaches treat each other like crap all of the time after games. tennis players yell at the umpire in every tournament(serena gets grief for it). baseball managers lose their minds a few times a season. all of this stuff happens plus much more and my timeline doesn't explode with people commenting on their "ignorance" or "classless" behavior. i get that the nfl is insanely popular but the outrage is nonexistant in other circumstances where the individual is white and therefore more predictable to middle america.

john mcenroe (sp?) got crap for it all the time too. and if you can't see the difference between coaches/managers/players getting angry and arguing with the refs over a call, and a player yelling into the camera/at the interviewer about how great he is, then i don't know what to tell you. americans in general like humble players, that goes for all races.
just look at gE. shellshock says if people saw what he works on, they would blush cause it's so big timey, and everyone laughs at the jackass for being a jackass.

John McEnroe became the biggest star in tennis because of his actions. I mean he's doing credit card commercials 20 years after he retired because of the way he used to act.
Did anyone call him a thug or ignorant at any point in his career? I suppose it's possible, but unlikely.

don't be ignorant. you and me both know he was labeled a crybaby and hothead. he was mocked in late night talk shows and SNL (omg, like kanye was after throwing a fit). he's popular now because he made fun of his past actions, people tend to forgive you when you do that.
like i said though, arguing a call with an official is totally different than what sherman did, and everyone knows it.

sherman will still be famous in 20 years as well and for the same reason
-
don't be ignorant. you and me both know he was labeled a crybaby and hothead. he was mocked in late night talk shows and SNL (omg, like kanye was after throwing a fit). he's popular now because he made fun of his past actions, people tend to forgive you when you do that.
not unlike mike tyson
-
can anyone show me when a white guy (or hell, even another black guy) reacted this way in a postgame interview? maybe the reaction is because of jackassery, not because of race.
coaches treat each other like crap all of the time after games. tennis players yell at the umpire in every tournament(serena gets grief for it). baseball managers lose their minds a few times a season. all of this stuff happens plus much more and my timeline doesn't explode with people commenting on their "ignorance" or "classless" behavior. i get that the nfl is insanely popular but the outrage is nonexistant in other circumstances where the individual is white and therefore more predictable to middle america.
john mcenroe (sp?) got crap for it all the time too. and if you can't see the difference between coaches/managers/players getting angry and arguing with the refs over a call, and a player yelling into the camera/at the interviewer about how great he is, then i don't know what to tell you. americans in general like humble players, that goes for all races.
just look at gE. shellshock says if people saw what he works on, they would blush cause it's so big timey, and everyone laughs at the jackass for being a jackass.
the guy who just got done playing an nfl game and making the biggest play of his life and of his team's season should be able to say whatever the eff he wants without being called arrogant.
competing your ass off and caring about the outcome of your matchup and of the game like sherman does is better sportsmanship than 10 million interviews of "aww shucks, i just did my best." if americans don't understand that they don't understand sport.
-
yeah, he should be able to say whatever he wants. he should also be judged for what he says.

judged as "classless" "arrogant" "ignorant" "a n-word" for yelling into the mic after a personal and team victory. he plays a violent sport in a position where people talk after every single play. it was a hilarious expression of emotion, not cause to be hated. people who hate him for it have a deeper agenda that they may not even be aware of.
-
I don't say these things because I believe in the ‘brute' nature of men or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man's finest hour -- his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear -- is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and yells at the television camera and reporter on the field of battle, proclaiming his greatness, victorious.
Also, _Fan, I loved the Oregonian letter to the ed.

well, obviously i'm not saying that there is zero racism from his "haters". those kind of people will always be around, but i don't think it's as prevalent as the article was making it out to be. the "jameis is dumb" crowd is much better example of widespread racism i think, where a white player would be given more leniency for an accent. if a white star said exactly what sherman said, the reaction would be the same (minus the small contingent of n-word/monkey tweets). look how many people hate manziel for his off the field arrogant/classless acts.
classless and arrogant are absolutely fair criticisms though. ignorant has kind of taken on a meaning that is separate from it's dictionary definition, so i could see that being used as well by a lot of people.
personally i think jackass fits perfectly.
-
Dumb people calling the Stanford grad ignorant is pretty racist. Arrogant is probably fair. Classless is fair too. He apologized the next day but a lot of people ignore that because they already have the narrative they want.
I really don't get what the issue is. He didn't cuss on national TV. Do people want Bill Belichek presser boring?

absolutely. ego and arrogance are almost requirements to be a professional athlete (and many other very successful people). but it's the sort of thing that is rarely seen publicly, and that reason is because the general public finds those qualities distasteful. gE loves it, i get that, but surely you guys understand what normal humans are like too, right?
-
Isn't this the same reason tons of people hate Johnny Manziel and Marshall Henderson?
-
yeah i don't get the issue either. i mean if people want to feign shock and anger over the fact that one nfl player called another one mediocre then ok i guess. but it still seems weird to just have such a strong stance on it. mediocre is just a pretty weird line in the sand for some i guess and the seahawk guy crossed it. live and learn i suppose.
-
Seven, I get that. I am just having fun. Other than the adrenaline, I think players say things like this more often than we are giving them credit for. Beaz and "play 'em in Africa" is a similar comment, no? Maybe not as much as a "me" comment as Sherman, but similar.
FTR, Beaz saying he'd play KU in Africa is eaz one of my top 5 KSU Cats quotes of all time. Somebody should start a thread.

i mean seriously though...
"what's that??! he did what!?!?! oh no he didn't! he called another person mediocre??!! that's it, go get me the laptop. i am going to just go off on twitter about this. mediocre?! i mean what is the world even coming to!?!? i mean they have to fine him or not let him play in the super bowl, right? mediocre. wow, just wow. just when you thought you've heard it all. i'm just so mad i could spit! mediocre, huh? man the nerve."
-
Isn't this the same reason tons of people hate Johnny Manziel and Marshall Henderson?
Off the field Manziel got drunk and disappointed a bunch of kids at a camp. Off the court Henderson does a crap ton of drugs. Off the field Sherman does charity events and graduates from Stanford.

People don't hate Maziel or Marshall because of on the field issues. It's their on field antics and soundbytes that draw the ire of fans, just like with this case. It's exactly the same.
-
like i said though, arguing a call with an official is totally different than what sherman did, and everyone knows it.
well, yeah. In one case you're berating an authority figure in charge of keeping the contest fair and safe, and in the other you're merely addressing an anonymous audience and competitor. Everyone knows it.

Henderson's antics are a much better comparison than those of JFF, but he doesn't have the talent to back it up like RS or JF. Also, how often do you see idiots/tucks on twitter calling MH a 'wigger'. I think race certainly plays a part.

Maybe that's the case for Marshall, but that's a lot of the reason people hate Manziel. The partying and whatnot.

can anyone show me when a white guy (or hell, even another black guy) reacted this way in a postgame interview? maybe the reaction is because of jackassery, not because of race.
Who exactly are you referring to? There was clearly lots of negative reaction that was real racist and some that were not.
The debate that followed your post lost me a bit, is anyone here seriously attempting to debate to debate that America doesn't prefer its black humble and well spoken?

If John mcenroe is any indication, they're fine with white athletes being rude and arrogant as long as they poke fun at themselves in a credit card commercial.

I'm not destroying anyone. It's a discussion.

The guys on WIBW radio yesterday afternoon referenced an earlier interview with Priest Holmes. In it, Priest admitted to not knowing how players can do on-field interviews immediately at the end of a game due to the fact that the players essentially assume a different personality during a game. Having to immediately switch off that persona and return to their civil selves once the mic and camera are in their face takes quite a bit of effort.
-

Do you have any examples? I find that people hate arrogant players while they are still playing and love them when they retire, but I could be wrong. I know my grandpa still hates Joe Namath.

Well I'm not 26 and you're going to have to take my word on this one. There are plenty of old people reading this who hated Ali until he lit that torch, most if not all won't admit it though. Ali got no endorsements, Cosell got as much grief and death that's as Ali because he befriended him. This is all documented.

I am not 26 either and you are greatly exaggerating the timing of Ali's redemption, it started much earlier than 1996. I am not saying that there are those that will hate him until their dying day (if you think there are any like that on this blog go ahead and name names!). Cosell was indeed widely hated for plenty of other reasons than befriending Ali, jewish, a former lawyer, and "an early adopter of unpopular causes and a giant target for Americans everywhere".

It's really a fruitless exercise to play point counterpoint on this issue. There is going to be a white counter for every point brought up. First of all I don't think anyone is debating that all of these issues happen to both races, however with black athletes I feel like the intensity and anger is significantly greater and of course the character knocks are coupled with race tinged language. Also it should be known that it isn't just white people lashing out when stuff like this happens, Bomani had several tweets from black people saying stupid crap about Sherman.
Also since we are talking about this now and I won't ruin a thread with this question; seven in that thread that listed the 30 white people should be stopped why did you ask for a black one? Did you feel a sense of injustice by white people observing other white people doing stupid stuff? Do you think blackpeoplemeet.com is racist?

what i saw in that link was 30 stupid people (well, a couple were just dorky). i felt stupidity was the common factor, not their whiteness, and my comment was showing the absurdity of grouping them as such.
blackpeoplemeet.com? no thoughts on it at all. people have their preferences in a partner, and i don't consider that racist.

I still don't understand why it was a prevailing thought, I mean the people were white. When I go to worldstarhiphop or bossip I don't have the craven need to read about or see white people acting stupidly.

i think you are misunderstanding me completely. i didn't have a desire to read about black people acting stupidly, and i didn't feel a white injustice was happening. the comment was 100 percent sarcastic about how it's just as dumb to make a list of stupid white people as it is to make list of stupid black people. if the title was "30 stupid people" and only contained white people in it, i wouldn't have even noticed.

Do you have any examples? I find that people hate arrogant players while they are still playing and love them when they retire, but I could be wrong. I know my grandpa still hates Joe Namath.
I would too. He predicted that his AFL Jets would beat the living snot out of the NFL Colts. Everyone knew that couldn't be done and heaven forbid anyone saying such a thing. But I kind of like him; only because he looked so good in panty hose later on in life.
-
yeah, he should be able to say whatever he wants. he should also be judged for what he says.
trim 3:16 and trim 3:17
judged as "classless" "arrogant" "ignorant" "a n-word" for yelling into the mic after a personal and team victory. he plays a violent sport in a position where people talk after every single play. it was a hilarious expression of emotion, not cause to be hated. people who hate him for it have a deeper agenda that they may not even be aware of.
There's not always an agenda. A lot of people have one to be sure, but there are probably just many who are bent out of shape because, like seven said, they simply think the guy is being a "jackass." Stop painting with such a broad brush.
i really regretted saying "agenda." what i meant was that people are unaware of the decisions their subconscious makes for them. people who are not blatantly racist can still hold some pretty harmful opinions despite believing they treat everyone equally.
this test from harvard takes 10 minutes and will explain and expose some biases of which many people aren't aware.

Seven, just from the posts I read today, and not only in this thread, you are the type of guy a friend would have a hard time thinking of you a only a black man. Because you blend with society. Now MIR on the other hand will remind you he's black as many times as he can. He is a black racist and doesn't know it. By that, I mean he will always point out the differences and inequalities in all men by race.

Where did I mention that I hated Sherman or his rant. Personally, I love this type of interview from someone who is charged up after winning a championship game.

Does this help. They are successful because they get along and work with everyone. Plus they have lots of common sense. If you didn't know them and they called you, you would have no hint of what race they are. Mainly because when they see a person, they don't see them as a "white, black, Hispanic, Asian etc..." just who they are by the way they act.

I came up with some very poetic words in this thread and it appears only bubbles appreciated them. Somebody else, please validate me and I don't even care what race you are.

Why is Richard Sherman lying about his SAT scores? Post Rating (4 votes)

From his scout, rivals, and other high school recruiting profiles: Sherman reports a 3.9 GPA/990 SAT/1060 retake. So a 21 and 23 ACT equivalent. Not even close to get into Stanford. He also got a 24 on his Wonderlic which is what an average secretary would score.
Now I see many media outlets reporting he received a 1200 and all the way up to a 1400 on his SAT, or the ACT equivalent of a 31. LOL.
Why is a man with below average SAT scores, average Wonderlic, and a communications degree (while being a privileged athlete) considered "brilliant"?

Man this is what people do, they just can't leave it be. For the record Stanford does not have special admissions standards for athletes, I'd seriously doubt they would make special exceptions for the 61st ranked cornerback.
Do you know that JO's rivals profile said that he had an offer from Coach Cal at Kentucky? There are a lot of people with a lot of access to those profiles.

Weird. JO's mom never mentioned that when I asked her all the teams that recruited JO. We got him over Rhode Island, thanks to mom.

Yeah, that was also Kentucky, pre Calipari. he was a '08 recruit.

One of the most uncomfortable times of my life was when MIR invited all of us to watch him in one of his weekend tennis tournaments. We were all there early in our specially made MIR tennisPAK t-shirts, so it was pretty clear who we were supporting. He pretty much cruised through the bracket, saying things to his opponents that would make Sherman blush and doing heel stuff that nicname only dreams about. We, by proxy, become pariahs among the spectators. To top it all off, MIR took to the winner's podium and did the Tommie Smith gloved fist thing while they played a PE song I'm told he forced some intern to put on the PA system. Talk about awkward. He's got a hell of a kick serve, tho.

If MIR hadn't insisted on telling every single person in stillwater that he was black that time we all went down a few years ago, we probably wouldn't have been told by the Wendy's front counter lady that we needed to get him to the kansas border by sundown.

MIR has a different point of view being a black man in middle America that many on the board cannot understand. Not to speak on his behalf, but its not hard to imagine he sees the world differently due to experiences that many of us cannot relate to. Completely making up numbers here, but say 90% of the world is not racist. The remaining 10% is easily ignored and marginalized by the 90% of the majority race as insignificant and outliers as we don't have to deal with their crap. You can bet the 10% are more visible, shitty, and significant to the minority race though.

Well like 99% of the world makes less than a KCMO teacher.

Yes, for instance:
Telling someone they are a racist because you don't agree with or understand with their viewpoints could possibly be construed as race baiting.
Calling someone a race baiter because you don't care to hear or read opinions from that of another race is racist.
Bang up observation demo

Absolutely, I was just using numbers that even the "racism is dead, we have a black president" crowd would find hard to argue with

Good post. I'd say though I don't really care about the 10% that are racist, I'm more dismayed by the 75% that don't understand race but refuse to try to understand how others think and feel.
-
MIR race-baits and doesn't even realize he's doing it. I went with him to that tourney in KC when the 'cats played gonzaga and duke. We were walking across a street and MIR somehow riled up a guy to roll down his window as he was driving by and yell "eff you, brotha man" at us. NO WAY does that happen to me if I'm walking with non-race-bait'r Gooch or somebody.

See what I mean? Leave it to MIR to describe something as "black balled."

At least he didn't discriminate by pluralizing it.

I, for one, appreciate mir's points of view. I usually don't agree, but it's nice to have alternative viewpoints to help shape your opinions, and often I hadn't even thought of what he points out.
thanks bro

That would make sense. That's not what I saw, but I definitely believe you.

Demaryius Thomas is the fastest receiver richard the runt has been matched up with this year, nearly 1/5th of a second faster in the 40. He'll probably go for 3 TD's.

Is it wrong to be intimidated by or feel fear for a extremely strong, angry man, yelling into a camera?
Definitely a lot of racism came out in the reaction to his interview. I fully support his trash talking, his high entertainment, in addition to his skills on the field. He is clearly a very witty guy based upon things I've read on twitter, and his ability to refute all comers. I appreciate it a lot and back in HS after I would block a shot or score, I'd run back down the yelling (usually just a loud exclamation of YEAH! or something) I'd also stare down the person on the other team that I blocked or scored on. I love the passion, the trash talk, and mental aspect of the game.
I just don't buy that is inherently based upon race to have a negative reaction to the Sherman. I don't buy that a black player needs to act a certain way to be loved. I actually struggle to find a black player that I loved that didn't show a lot of emotion on the field of play and in turn tend to hate the white players who showboat and talk crap.
Racism is a live and well in America. I think you can be afraid or fear someone yelling when their emotions are at a high level and it not be due to race.

Also, when I think "white, arrogant, taunting" I think Bill Romanowski
