Post by: pissclams on November 04, 2013, 03:36:53 PM
i bought a mycloud NAS
now i want to duplicate my itunes from OSX to my NAS but make it so it can be streamed by either a Mac or OSX through the internet

is there data out there that will allow me to do it?  can it be done?  data?  virus?

Also for the coding studs, if I can do basic C++ can I do Arduino stuff?

my Fortran knowledge is of no use here.   Bissey lied to me.   :shakesfist:

Have you seen the Blueduino thing coming out this winter?  I donated for it on Kickstarter and am getting a few for it.

I just run plex media server on an extra machine at home and point it at my itunes folder and leave a port forwarded on my router.  play music via web interface or on ios app

I have quite a bit of music on Amazon and on iTunes.  I need something that will let me pull from both without having to double catalog.  Will Plex do that?  If not, anyone know what will?

why not run it on your regular machine.  why did you have to go extra machine.

Mix in trying to do this where pics (think Lightroom library) and videos are also available to Mac and Window and Smart TV thing on that NAS and that's what I've been trying to figure out....unsuccessfully.

i'm not familiar with amazon's setup - are they just mp3 files which get organized into folders?  you can point plex at as many folders as you want and have it show up as one library

only really said that because i just use a chromebook for most of my stuff at home.  can be any desktop and/or laptop you keep on all the time

also a cool benefit, i have an old ipod touch i didn't really have any use for.  i have it plugged into my receiver and put the plex app on it.  i then just select this ipod as my output device from the web interface or from my phone if i want to jam out on my stereo.  it's a pretty cool ecosystem IMO

Set up Windows 2012 Server on a hyper-v and set up a DFS share and add your NAS to it.

i think i might be mumped without a true COBOL warrior weighing in

sample usage you're thinking of?  nasty Nas for backup, want to stream music while at work/traveling on another computer/phone?

with plex i wouldn't be using my nas so i'd essentially have to keep my computer on all the time right?  would it still work when my imac is sleeping?

Oh I am not.  It is supposed to come with a lot to get you started.  It basically incorporates next gen bluetooth(really long range) and seamlessly tied into audrino stuff.

I would love to learn a bunch about this type of stuff if I could find time.  Google it and you could probably get a better description.  I figure that if I can't get into it, I would give it to my bro for his bday.  He is super into this stuff.

yeah, plex isn't supported to run directly on that nas and i dunno if anything would be that does what you want (not really familiar with it).  looks like what's supported to run directly on that nas will only really work within your home network, unless you want to deal with the hassle of setting up & always having to connect to a VPN just to play music (you don't)

but i can connect to that nas through the internet and see my pics on it.  that's why i am thinking i need to figure out a system of data (1's and 0's) that allows me to move my music to my nas and then access it through my system also.  #data_smarts #dos #mylife #VPN #tweetdeck #sansabelt

what kind of music are we talking about here clams?  might be important to the dataheads around here in personalizing your own personal 1's and 0's thing.

just like 10 bands/groups/acts will probably get those proggies started.

That sounds interesting and sort of what I was wanting to get into (if I have the time, too).  Although I'm not sure I'm capable.

thanks.  i think my thing already does this, it's just  a matter of setting it up right.  dunno.  might hire geek squad to come out, expensive but if they can get it working it will be good.

Subsonic (http://www.subsonic.org/pages/index.jsp (http://www.subsonic.org/pages/index.jsp))  is another alternative media streamer, that only does music, that I use.   Its a little less user friendly than Plex (which I also use) but I feel like its more reliable (Plex can be a little buggy)

PC, unfortunately when you buy (rather than build) a NAS, you'd running on a smaller more proprietary operating system than if you had network storage on a regular computer, on your network.  So that limits what your going to be able to do with it.  My setup, for example, is just a spare computer with a RAID array connected, that also serves as my HTPC.  If you want to link the product that is running your NAS, I could probably come up with a snarky LMGTFU link that would get you pointed in the right direction.
