From K-State press release:
MANHATTAN -- Another enrollment record has fallen at Kansas State University. This fall, 24,581 students make up the largest enrollment in the university's 150-year history.
The Manhattan campus welcomed 302 more students this fall compared to a year ago.
"Manhattan is a growing, vibrant, classic college town that students want to be a part of, no matter where they're from," said Pat Bosco, vice president for student life and dean of students. "We're the No. 1 choice for Kansas high school seniors. We have a student body that's larger and more diverse than ever. Among Kansas public universities, we have the highest percentage of freshmen who return their sophomore year because K-State continually strives to provide students the best undergraduate experience."
The most diverse student body in university history includes 3,458 who identify as black, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, Hawaiian/Pacific islander or multiracial. In fall 2012 that number was 3,379.
"Of course, I am very pleased -- year after year of record multicultural student enrollments," said Myra Gordon, associate provost for diversity. "Last year we had more African-American students than any other Kansas Board of Regents institution. This year we have more Hispanic students. We are realizing our goal of being the university of choice for multicultural students in the region and beyond. I thank everyone for their hard work."
This fall 2,106 students came to K-State from more than 100 countries. That's a one-year increase of 61 international students.
"When students and parents see that we aspire to become a Top 50 public research university by 2025, they realize that this is a place where students can set their own big goals and find the encouragement and support to achieve them," said President Kirk Schulz.
From LJWorld story:
Fall enrollment at the Lawrence and Edwards campuses stands at 24,435 students, which is a drop of 142

So, we're the largest school in the state now. Feels good to be big brother.
:emawkid:
-
It's just because KU's admission standards are so much higher.
-
KU numbers prolly count Combs.
-
THE Kansas State University
-
are we talking butts in seats or actual tuition bills paid?
-
tons of minorities!
-
Kind of sad to see little bro's downward spiral. I wish there was something we could do to help but there really isn't anything.
-
at what point does ku ask to merge with ksu because of failing enrollment?
-
to the Phog !
:cheese:
-
No wonder Dax wants to raise admissions, it is turning into a degree mill.
-
Before long, there will be hardly any Kansans with undergrad degrees from KU.
I will still root for them a little, because of the tons and tons of KSU undergrads that get MD's from KU.
-
If the Regents weren't stacked with sqwawks, I think there would be serious discussion about attaching the medical school to K-State. It's enrollment is declining, too. Obviously, the K-State administration would know how to address that and the many new doctors wouldn't have their names and reputations associated with that failing POS down the Kaw.
-
Pat Bosco could walk up to some Stanford pre-meds and they'd be wearing purple with purple powercat face stickers and purple zubaz and #4 cat jerseys and EMAW'ing their faces off in like one single second.
-
Just another day in the life of the Big bro popular stud that everybody wants to be friends with.
-
I feel like a strong KU makes for a good rivalry and helps us out in the long run. This is not good news.
-
Now we need to see how many grads each flagship shits out each year.
-
Now we need to see how many grads each flagship shits out each year.
Our grad rate is pretty abysmal. No idea what KU grad rate is.
-
aau rumblings... :surprised:
-
aau rumblings... :surprised:
not really a surprise. ku has almost been kicked out somewhere around twenty times now.

Probably abysmal too...that's what the admissions standards are supposed to help fix.

Why doesn't Bosco recruit our football and basketball student athletes?
-
If you knew the places to look, you would find KU officials very concerned about their AAU status.
-

dax, they've been concerned about this for years. years. nothing new.
-
If you knew the places to look, you would find KU officials very concerned about their AAU status.
It's good to be motivated. Otherwise, we'd probably accept 99% of all applicants.

This talking point was inevitable once KU raised its admission standards. Congrats on diploma mill status, though.
-

I thought standards didn't kick in until 2016 tho?
-
i joke around a lot here but i'm dead serious when i say that if i had to pick four things i'd want from my school it would be...
1)be the best football team in the conference.
2)be the most popular school in the state. dominate undergrad enrollment.
3)be the best basketball team in the conference.
4)be the best baseball team in the conference.
we are doing them all. after that though, i can't think of what would be important? do you go to women's bball or volleyball? my guess is yeah, probably. would one of those be #5?
-

-
is there another school that can claim as much dominance over an instate rival as we have over ku in the past year? maybe ohio state? but i can't even really say that they have an instate rival. ku is an actual rival for ksu. ohio state has who? ohio? miami of ohio? i don't think those count. thoughts?
-
This talking point was inevitable once KU raised its admission standards. Congrats on diploma mill status, though.
Yeah. Everyone knew that those admission standards that take effect years from now would somehow i can't even think of a way to finish this sentence.

The Med school is the only reason they have AAU status. The rest of the university is awful like kstate.
-
Not sure what we will do if we ever lose Dr. Socorro Herrera who leads one of the best ELL education departments in the U.S. and brings in millions of dollars of DOE research grant money.
We will be totally screwed!

Will NBAF be affiliated with the university at all? If so we should get AAU because of it.

NBAF is a more elite designation than AAU. BY FAR.

4th year of declining enrollment :sdeek:
Yes, mainly because KU's 2008 freshman class was its biggest ever:
As of the 20th day of class this semester, the new freshman class numbered 3,771, an increase of 5.3 percent from 2011. The class also set KU records for average ACT score at 25.1 and for racial diversity, with minority students making up 21.3 percent of the total.
A big problem where total enrollment is concerned is that KU’s biggest class ever — the freshmen of 2008, who numbered nearly 4,500 — began to graduate in 2012, leaving a big hole to fill.
I know you guys are mostly just trolling, but there's really no way you can honestly claim that K-State is the flagship institution in the state. KU has a larger endowment, larger campus, larger alumni base, more professors, more graduate programs, AAU status, etc, etc. It's great that K-State's enrollment is increasing, but having the highest undergraduate enrollment in the state doesn't necessarily constitute flagship status. Both universities are quality institutions, and both fanbases have a right to be proud of their schools. Let's not get carried away here.
-
The trend, tho

Yes, http://www.k-state.edu/govrelations/federal/nbaf.html, and it will propel our prestige over KU even that much further than it already is!

Flagship problems.

It truly is amazing how much better K-State has been than KU in almost every aspect over the last several years. Building stuff, sports, academics, enrollment, nbaf, etc. I mean it really boggles the mind.

Somebody take pics of all the homecoming flagship floats. T-Y.

yea might as well pack it in...our endowment which is about $1 billion more than our little brothers and out much more superior athletic success...we just can't compete. oh and MHK is just a thriving metropolis.
-
Beems listed "larger campus" as a reason KU maintains flagship status. I mean what in the eff does that have to do with anything?
MOVE OVER, UC-BOULDER! USAFA HAS 18,000 ACRES!
Campus size isn't any more arbitrary than undergraduate enrollment. Using your guys' logic, UC-Davis is more of a flagship than Stanford.
-
We probably won't be big 12 champs in b-ball or football again for the next 15 years. Maybe baseball tho.
-
Kansas State University - Manhattan is the flagship institution of the Kansas State University system. So, yeah, they are a flagship. The term has become bastardized, and now it's more of an issue of perception and majority opinion. Sorry.

stanford and uc davis are in the same conference and compete yearly against each other for conference titles and highschool students? weird. never knew that. oh well though, guess i have my 3maw titles, aa direct flights and red hot student enrollment to fall back on. congrats to ku and lawrence for having more walmarts.
-
Beems listed "larger campus" as a reason KU maintains flagship status.
Stanford is private bruh.
Point still stands.

KU 27,000>KSU 24,000

The point is true. However it was a terrible, terrible way of saying it, especially considering Cal - Berkley is actually the flagship of the UC System (and has a larger enrollment, to boot!)
The issue in the logic that you failed terribly to highlight is this:
KSU has more undergrads than KU
[missing premise]
------------------------
KSU is better than KU
The missing premise must be "if school A has more undergrads than school B, then school A is better than school B." Once you've shown that, it's pretty easy to see how that premise is flawed. But it doesn't matter, anyway, especially since this whole discussion is 99% trolling, because they know it pushes the buttons of many, many KU fans. The 1% that is homerism, well, what do you think you're going to do about that, anyway?

the bottom line is that more high school students want to move to manhattan for four years and attend kansas state than want to live in lawrence and take classes and ku. take that information and spin it however you want i guess.
at the end of the day you have two schools in the same conference, in the same state and on the same highway that are only separated by 80 miles and one is losing students at a ridiculous pace while the other is gaining inversely. sucks to be ku/lawrence but that's what you get for building a topeka bedroom community with a bunch of walmarts and stripclubs. i'd feel sorry for them if it wasn't so funny.

Actually, most of it is factually incorrect or naïve. I don't care to argue about it, tho. PM if you need some handholding through the specifics.

none of it is factually incorrect or naive. i've only really lived in two towns my entire life. lawrence for 8 and mhk for the rest. i also have degrees from both schools. what i said above wasn't a troll. it is what it is. we can debate this if you want though. it's a free board and nobody is going to ban you if that's what you are worried about.

Manhattan is cool if you like shitty restaurants, fat chicks, and country stampede.

This is actually true. I've been to at least 20 restaurants in Manhattan that are better than anything Lawrence can offer.

actually, the quote was "a bunch of walmarts and stripclubs" and the last i checked, lawrence had more of those than manhattan and topeka combined.
again, i don't have a major issue with it and am by no means a "prude", but it is a pretty good barometer for what kind of town lawrence is and no real wonder why cool high school seniors don't want to go there and parents of kids worthy of attending college don't want to send their kids there. is what it is. mass st. is nice though. also the disc golf course in centennial park.
-
restaurants are similar, although i'd give the slight edge to lawrence.
girls are the same. no edge.
before wakarusa got the eff out of dodge i would have given lawrence the "drunk music festival by lake" a big edge. but they couldn't sustain it, so you have to give mhk and the country thing the edge.
basically an edge push. no edge winners in the above three edge debates.
-
The chicken strip selection in Lawrence puts it over the top, imo.

So if you go to the wikipedia page for the university of kansas, the citation for Flagship as it is referenced under the university type directs ot a USA today article from 2006, listing 75 flagships from 50 states. Ergo, there can be more than one flagship institution per state... and you know what two universities are listed in that article?
You've got it :tsc:
Lets just get along

Room and board, books and other costs are not included."
It is weird having an actual source that doesnt come from some jorts wearing mouthbreather in Lawrence

All of yous. College Station is the flagship of the Texas A&M system. Austin is the flagship of the UT System. Lawrence is the flagship of the KU system. Manhattan is the flagship of the KSU system. The idea that there is one flagship per state is a misconception, and the measurement of same is based solely on a plurality of opinions from those without a stake.

_FAN, warm up the goEMAW Flagship U shirts.

This is what I'm picturing in my head:
Willie driving that cool roadster thingy with dollar bills flying out like that cash man from the GEICO commercials. Looks in the rear view mirror, and as the cash and purple dust clears, there's baby jay choking on the dust, scrambling to pick up the cash next to his broken down ford fiesta.

What happens to State politics if this trend continues and every year more Kansans choose K-State than KU?
-
i'd think that K-State would need to target more of the "non collage types" because the state still has plenty of t-shirts, for it to affect politics
-

KU has JCCC locked up to the extent I'm surprised they don't count it as part of their enrollment.

Super flagship AAU stud boss KU and little flagship of the prairie K-State = flagship bros for life! Take that, KU-Edwards campus!
:tsc:

I know we all just want to party our asses off about our flagship status, but we should probably take the time to understand the responsibilities. We don't want to be in the same boat as KU with their AAU status

I guess it is a little dated, but at least we found a title Lawrence can clearly claim over MHK. The universities are a reflection of their communities.
