Title: who wants to open a jamaican/caribbean bar/restaurant in aggieville with me
Post by: Dr Rick Daris on June 22, 2013, 06:23:34 PM
so i went to rays (anderson ave) today because i hate how busy dillons always is. i boycot them. anyway, i've never paid attention to the price of chicken until today. they had chicken quarters for $0.62/pound. that means that you can buy a leg and thigh bone in for like $0.70. then you just add some rice and peas (read beans and rice but with a little coconut milk instead of southern spices) and you can make a meal for like a dollar that you could sell for 7 (little grill). plus there is a big hole for a carribean themed type place in aggieville.

taco place? check. sandwich place? check. burger place? check. just make it similar in size to rab or so long or taco lucha and design it well and also offer up shrimp dishes and stuff and then carribean crap the hell out of the place and have good bartenders and specials and decent music and boom. we are cool aggieville restaurant/bar owners.  :gocho:

thoughts?

Buy pats and have the front be goEMAW.com bar and jamaican/Caribbean restaurant, and the back can be sds Hyatt.

it's probably only going to be a Hyatt House or Hyatt Place though. we'd have to really turn our crap up to infinity to get them to Park Hyatt or Andaz our asses when we're remodeling pat's blue ribbon.

the great thing is we wouldn't even need that. everyone could just go to the goEMAWbar/Hyatthotel turntable room and party from their phones. we could have one tv with the feed from the room and the chat off to the side (let's keep it PG13 guys)

i think you are overplaying manhattanites idea or love of what cajun is or the fact that they even care. cause 70% of them just wanted to eat at the cajun place and order the birdie or belly bomb. it would be like that but more caribbean themed. much more and aggieville would eat it up. you could still get a "carribean burger, etc".

Hey, sure, if you want someone to do it really mediocrally then yeah, any jackass can do it. But if you want it to be something people try and think "oh my God I need to come back here soon, VERY soon!" then you probably need someone with more experience.

it's mostly all chicken, rice, plantains, beans, chick peas, cilantro, bell peppers, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, coconut, some shrimp maybe. wikipedia helped me with some of that. I wouldn't have said chick peas or sweet potatoes but what do you know, there they are.

i would not agree with this list at all and would add goat and curry (lots of goat and curry) and take out chick peas, cilantro, bell peppers, tomatoes and sweet potatoes.

and like i said, we would be like american/caribbean, with the theme being the most important thing about the whole place, so we really wouldn't have any goat and not that much curry. v nice bath rooms and size being the next most important part of the equation. followed by good decor, competent staff and great tasting food in that order. it's a homerun guys.

Make it BYOB and just rent out seats/tables and sell food.

why

There was this whole discussion in some other thread about MHK limiting new liquor licenses, not sure id that became reality or not.. But the thought was that the most efficient way to get one was but an existing place.

I think an unusual food genre of any kind would do well in Aggieville, if done well.

Indian food British themed pub would be cool

Oh, oh, oh....

Make it a Gastro Pub that features foods from genres of former British colonies!  Rick gets his jerk chickens and rice peas and I get my veggie pakora and chicken tikka masala with nann

it is so cavalier for you guys to think this would be easy.  maybe you should contact the guys at pig and finch and see if they would be interested in expanding their brand.

I'm glad you agree.  It would feature wines from the greatest non-french wine regions on earth.

It's really not that different than what you find in pubs in London...loads of curries and other Caribbean influences, but for this concept, I'll really hammer on the most exotic elements.

Then, you throw in the obligatory fish & chips and maybe a meat pie and your done.
