I was expecting to see Wild West World from "What's the Matter with Kansas."
-
Opryland in Nashville also closed several years ago. RIP

Tragic

I remember going to Joyland once a year for "School Night" with all my classmates as a child, good times.

loved that place  was sad when it became a home depot. I mean home depot is cool, don't get me wrong, but, ugh.

There's one in Leavenworth that closed. Had awesome green t rex statue thing.
-
Abandoned theme parks seem like a great place to stash a body.
-
From now on when someone I know is going to make a bad financial decision I'll say "That sounds as bad of an idea as investing in an Amusement Park in Asia"
-
I've been in wichita for 8 years and have no concept of where joyland is/was or even where a decent-sized amusement park ever could've been (excluding park city-ish off-interstate vacant lots). Longtime wichitans sure have a thing for it tho.

mrs. dave's reaction when I mentioned this blog post was "OMG I LOVED JOYLAND OMG!"

in a wild exchange of events, this non-wichita native that never ever went to wichita managed to go to both barnacle bills and then seven years later joyland. then a year later joyland closed. go cats, ftb, stud, emaw.

barnacle bills was sweet

Wichita is such a piece of crap..
Minus a few coffee shops, art joints, and a couple drinking holes this place is nothing but soiled trash..
I wish I woulda grew up in the KC area.
-
I know we got into this in the things that don't suck in wichita thread, but I'd been led to believe Home Depot replaced Fantasea. This makes it sound like they co-existed. So did Home Depot eventually expand into where Fantasea was or is the North Y sitting on the Fantasea burial ground?

I bet you'd like it more if you pak'd, but that pretty much applies to anywhere.

Found a street address on Wichita. Original location would've been elite. I'll try to do some investigation.
It was originally located at 1515 East Central in Wichita (between New York and Mathewson streets) but soon moved to its current location at 2801 South Hillside.

Here's my knowledge base on Barnacle Bill's vs. Fantasea:

You could always grab a quick bite to eat at Willie C's before heading out to see the Wings play. The the next day you could take the whole fam over to Fantasea.

I don't know who this cocksucker Barnacle Bill is, but if he thinks he can just roll into town in his big corporate jet, with his fancy suit, and his big corporate money and lobbyist and rename fantasea, then he can get the eff right out of my face. That's like calling Scotch and Soda Maggie's. GTFO, it's Scotch and Soda. Or calling Sandstone whatever the eff they call it now.
Both fantasea and joyland were amazing. We've been through this before in pretty good detail, I think. I'm not going to find the link because its saturday and I'm late for some poolside binging with super elite beers that you've never heard of before that would melt your face and brain and balls and stuff.
-
what's the abandoned place south of the kansas coliseum and the abandoned greyhound track? approx 75th and hydraulic.

like anyone would belive you in regards to stuff like this. like i said, pretty sure it's barnacle bills.
on second thought, maybe all the wichita people were the wrong ones and they all called it fantasea. kind of like how puniraptor pronounces his screen name.

On July 9, 2007, barely two months after the park opened, the owners filed for bankruptcy and closed it down.
jeez, wichitans just hate fun i guess.
-
It would be rough ridin' horrible to own/manage an amusement park in Wichita now. Like you'd be hosting Riverfest, but permanently, year-round, and it's your money on the line.

just heard back from two life long wichita'ers. so far it's 1-1. bb's vs fs.

For the first 18 years of my life i grew up across K-96 from Fantasea until it became the north Y and Home Depot (no one i knew called it Barnacle Bill's, if Barnacle Bill's was used it was to call it Barnacle Bill's Fantasea, else, just Fantasea). It was awesome the summer the Thunderplundge opened, you could hear the people scream all the way down from my house, and my house was 3 streets in, but with a straight on view of it. Joyland was fun, but eff that organ playing clown. Creeped the eff out of me, still does looking at whoever posted it earlier.
-
well there you have it. people that lived across the street called it fantaseas and other people in wichita called it barnacle bills. seems like we might have a "aggieville" vs "ville" type thing brewing, be sure to stay tuned in for the latest developments.
-

earlier I was going to suggest we buy this place and call it goEMAWworld but then realized this exact thing.

see my carribean themed bar/restaurant thread...
-
let's be honest, we'd just turn it into a bar with a hotel attached and the only activity will be drinking and eating and cats. also we'd either be a Hyatt or SPG property.
-
Omaha had a place called Penny Park that was a amusement park/water park hybrid place. Was great when I was growing up. a local band or someting are releasing an album tonight named after it:

-
now if you google penny park it's just a bunch of bullshit about the band and not anything about the park or goEMAW :dubious:

We could make it an upscale adult amusement park of sorts and just blatantly discriminate against trash (which I think is legal) by either denying entrance or being a place like those restaurants with rude waiters and me and people like me would walk around PI'n the crap out of undesirables. We'd become known for it and people from across the country would come to our non-white-trash amusement park/bar/resort.
Also I'd love to open anything with goEMAW in the name just so KSU sends their letter and we mush their faces and ball(s) and make a billboard of the exchange as our introductory marketing.
-

I don't remember if it's been done before, or if it would even go very far, but a fun thread would be "find obscure things to google for which goEMAW threads are in the top search results."
-

it could be because you are spelling it wrong. (https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.booleansoup.com%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Feyeroll.gif&hash=108a496f7a62e17cf9e70d8ef388fdbba23a5bb8)
it does bring up a possible good goEMAW trivia question though...
Q) what goEMAW poster has been to peoney park, barnacle bills fantasea and joyland.
A) daris. probably only daris.

:D

I went to this place about 3 weeks ago. These photos were taken in 2007. Now, it is totally overgrown and impassable beyond the outer edges. Disappointing.

damn, I love looking at this stuff

I know this topic is a fairly old post but I just had to throw my 2 cents in for whatever they're worth! If you grew up on the south/southeast side of Wichita or in the lgbt community you called it Barnacle Bill's or Barnacle Bill's fantasea. Why? Well, if you called it just fantasea people were liable to confuse it or joke that you were talking about Fantasy... a gay bar at 31st on Hillside, which is still open.
Joyland- oh how I miss that place! We used to walk over and hang out all day but that clown was quite the creepy feature!
On the topic of wild west world... my husband worked on the electrical there. That place wasn't even paying their contractors to finish the jobs and some of the rides were pretty shoddy. He refused to even let our family set foot in that place.
-

does wichita have the most per capita abandoned amusement parks in the world?

It sure does.

Ummm that actually says ditzy... but only dirty in the sense that I raise chickens, drive a jeep and would much prefer to play in the mud as opposed to going to the mall... :Carl:
-
Dammit. Reading this crap on my Nokia flip phone is difficult. Running over muddy children in a Jeep sounds horrible.
-
I visited all 3 wichita parks mentioned in this thread. Wild West World was by far the worst.
-
On another Joyland note...
I really hope this works out for this kid. It would be amazing to see Joyland running again. The closest thing we have to an amusement park these days is the water park Rock River Rapids in Derby. Its just a swimming pool compared to the likes of Barnacle Bill's and has no rides like Joyland. I would rather spend all day on the logjam than waste my money in Derby.
https://m.facebook.com/joylandrestorationproject
On the question of home depot. They were sold a plot of Barnacle Bill's land to help keep the park open. Although with the construction of the home depot they lost out considerably that season but had great hopes for the next. Ultimately though, they were just too far under. I dont think they stayed open but a couple more seasons.
-

:horrorsurprise:
Well I wouldn't know but I could only imagine it would sound horrible with their little bones crushing and their poor terrified screams... why would you do such a thing? :Crybaby:

A 6th grade HH saw his first, real life set of fake cans in a bikini at Fantasea. It was one of the defining moments of my youth.

Cut this crap out, it was called Fantasea and everybody knows it. I grew up in the Wichita area pretty much all my life, nobody called it Barnacle Bills except for the radio voice over in the commercials.
Barnacle Bill was the name of the dog character that was marketed with the park I believe.
By the way is anybody else just giddy inside thinking about the pirate ships with the water guns and cannons? That was just heaven to a kid to play on that thing.
-
I visited all 3 wichita parks mentioned in this thread. Wild West World was by far the worst.
The guy who developed Wild West World went to prison over the thing.. He failed to provide adequate information to the investors he dealt with.
The whole fiasco just pisses me off because it confirms how much of a bunch of Mayberry hayseeds this place can be. The public officials should have never done business with a crook.

Well there's no pretty much about me. I was born in Wichita to a mother and father who were raised in Wichita as well. My grandfather graduated hs in wichita. I grew up there and I've never lived more than 10 miles away just prefer to stick to the outskirts of Wichita. My dad lived lived next door to the aforementioned Fantasy. Trust me, if you lived on that side of town, FantaSea was called Barnacle Bill's but I'm sure this will always be an argument. Its like people saying mcdonalds isn't called mcd's or Walmart isn't called Wally world...or that Watson park isn't actually o j Watson park... So I say to each their own. :blah:

well there you have it. people that lived across the street called it fantaseas and other people in wichita called it barnacle bills. seems like we might have a "aggieville" vs "ville" type thing brewing, be sure to stay tuned in for the latest developments.
don't worry ditzyblonde. sometimes it's like trying to play canasta or spades with your sisters little kids in this place. it's just how it is. sometimes pretty madening but they're family so i mean hey, what can you do?

I visited all 3 wichita parks mentioned in this thread. Wild West World was by far the worst.
The guy who developed Wild West World went to prison over the thing.. He failed to provide adequate information to the investors he dealt with.
The whole fiasco just pisses me off because it confirms how much of a bunch of Mayberry hayseeds this place can be. The public officials should have never done business with a crook.
Only about 50% of their rides were open. Also, there were so many cars on the bumper cars that you couldn't even drive around, you just bumped around back and forth amongst the sea of cars.

I know this topic is a fairly old post but I just had to throw my 2 cents in for whatever they're worth! If you grew up on the south/southeast side of Wichita or in the lgbt community you called it Barnacle Bill's or Barnacle Bill's fantasea. Why? Well, if you called it just fantasea people were liable to confuse it or joke that you were talking about Fantasy... a gay bar at 31st on Hillside, which is still open.
yes! sweet, sweet confirmation that rick daris is always right. :Woot:
Cut this crap out, it was called Fantasea and everybody knows it. I grew up in the Wichita area pretty much all my life, nobody called it Barnacle Bills except for the radio voice over in the commercials.
Barnacle Bill was the name of the dog character that was marketed with the park I believe.
By the way is anybody else just giddy inside thinking about the pirate ships with the water guns and cannons? That was just heaven to a kid to play on that thing.
Your old and dumb.. Young and smart called it Fantasea.
